The data was publicly available from Genbank or the public sequencing effort. Heck I can go to about 2 or 3 websites right now and get it.
Celera's advantage was/is that the data was of higher quality and their database was curated better and had a higher reliability.
Now the public databases have become good enough that you don't need to use Celera's tools. I still find that the public databases are a bit of a mess but they are good enough to get the job done.
You are stupid for doing what you did. If they had ever caught you they could have done all kinds of things to you like charge you with crimes, put this on your permanent school record etc. DO NOT TELL THEM ANYTHING. Just don't fuck around on networks you do not own it could seriously mess up your future. Being branded a hacker and criminal could seriously impact your ability to go to college, get a job etc.
Once you decided to mess around on their network your window of opportunity of "being honest" has closed. Now it's best to STFU, move on and consider yourself lucky you did not get busted.
Oh and dont try the same stuff at whatever college you go to they may not have such clueless admins.
The problem is NProtect only runs when the game client runs. It's basically a wrapper app around the game client that prevents any app from running concurrent with the game. The first bots for L2 ran on top of the client basically intercepted and manipulated the packets to and from the server.
The most popular new bot for L2 does not use the client at all but emulates the communication protocol with the server. So botters will never have to worry about it but legit users have to put up with the buggy app on their machines.
The main problem with nProtect is that it will do nothing to stop cheaters. The most popular bot for L2 does not even use the game client but runs as a complete standalone app. The protocol the game uses to communicate with the game servers has been completely hacked to pieces and the bots can emulate it perfectly. All this will do is install a bad piece of software on legit users' machines while the botters will bypass it completely.
Once again chinese botters/hackers > NCSoft (the most popular bots/hacks are made by chinese programmers and are used by the workers of the companies that sell in-game currency for cash).
Make sure your firewall is setup properly (if you don't have the right ports forwarded it's sloooow).
eMule is not the fastest thing out there but because of the unique file ID's and the comments function I am always downloading exactly what I al looking for. Also, I never get file errors on big ISO's etc.
Overall though I prefer Torrent but the variety of stuff isn't there.
A lot of Univerities count on their research to yield money in the future. They have contracts with Biotech companies etc. to patent, license the technologies that come out of the research done on campus.
One summer I worked at a lab that had contrcts with about 3 biotech companies to test and develop new drugs. Most of the time I had no idea what the other people in the lab worked on. Protocols were kept secret, some people never presented their data and sometimes I had no idea what I was working on.
From time to time some guy from a biotech would show up with a briefcase full of vials. All they had on the label was a bar code and a string of numbes and letters. We would use them in the experiments, two weeks later he'd show up and pick up a CD with the data...
I think the point is the freakin manual sucks. Yes after a while it makes sense once you get used to certain terminology etc. but at first glance it makes absolutely no sense. Tell somebody with little computer experience to open up a root console and they will rightfully look at you like you just spoke to them in Chinese.
The other problem is that a lot of documentation is very distro and even distro version specific. The breakneck speed of development and the fractured nature of all the distros make it hard to find the right documentation. Enter a serch term in google and you might find something that works in RH but wll not work on Mandrake. heck something that worked one way in the 9.0 version of your curent distro works differently in the 9.2 release.
It's not as easy as yelling RTFM every tie there is a problem.
I just spent the weekend getting sound and 3D acceleration working on my MEPIS system. The documentation was full of: it works this way but there might be 15 different options depending on X, Y and Z. I almost had to draw a diagram to cover all the possibilities.
I agree but you must make the backdoor/override acessible only if you have physical acess to it.
This way it's much more likely that you client will recop their data rather then have it stolen through the network.

You can disable those you know. It's a simple click away.
Plus searching for updates is hardly what I call spyware. All it does is report the version you are using and downloads a new one if available. Unless you have some evidence it records or passes anything else along there is no reason to call it spyware.
Also what if I hosted a website that said unpopular things about the Government or the Church of Scientology etc. Do I really want to be able to be harassed/tracked down?
I have Charter cable in the US. Charter caps upload at 128 Kb at all levels of servise which absolutely blows. Up until recently it was the only provider in the area but DSL became available about a month ago. I'm seriously considering switching.
Marathon was a very cool game. We used to play it in the Mac lab at school. Not many of us could afford Macs at the time and one of our CS major friends was the Mac lab admin for the Art department. He did not do much administration unless you count loading Marathon on all the networked Macs and setting up weekly overnight LAN parties.
Please think about this: Name 1 comunity of non-geek persons that are more than 10 and that get together every day to discuss their ideas. There are NONE.
Bullshit. There are a ton of message boards full of non technical people. Check out Fark.com for example. Heck I can think of a lot more but I doubt they could cope with a slashdotting:)
They spend money on it because they need to use it. I am sure the computer security required by the NSA is not met by most vanilla versions of OSes out there.

All it takes is one pissed off school administrator and he's screwed. It's a gamble I would not take.

Add eraser to the list of programs that might do the job.

Can I get one of those for my wife? I'd pay very well.
190 kB/sec and going up...for once you gotta love the Slashdot effect.

It also looks like we liberated the server of al it's bandwidth...
I miss Sin :/ What game are you guys playing next?

I'm thinking a little after pigs start fying but way before Hell freezes over.
Also Sigames (makers of Championship Manager) have released patches and video content via BT.

Also Football Manager (the renamed Championship Manager which is supposed to come out this year).
Yes the Eye Of Bill is watching. I can sense it's Evil gaze.
