In New Zealand there's one choice, NZ Telecom. I there's one other long distance service that my wife set up a while back, but they were no cheaper.
Guess my kharma can't get much worse here, so I may as well just say it. Americans are spoiled and whine about stupid things. Just get over it, mate and consider yourself lucky you even have a choice.
Maybe you just suck at coding

Ageism in IT?

I'm a 49 yo who started coding in 1988 as a second career. I have never had a problem finding work both in the US and here in New Zealand, but then I happen to be a really good coder.
Don't be so quick to jump on ageism as an excuse. Look at your resume and your ability. Maybe you could go into construction or something and be more successful.
I remember a web site about a guy in Sweden or Denmark or someplace doing the same thing only under more controlled conditions and he actually tried to reinforce the CD's with kevlar and stuff. He tested several different kinds to see at what speed they would shatter.
Really interesting news 4 fucking years ago. The link was probably on SlashDot, too, but I can't remember where because it was so long ago. Another Slashdot rerun.
If everytime I thought of something really good I waited to build it then I'm going to lose out to someone else.
If you think of a revolutionary wing design that computer simulations show will double lift are you going to build the fucking airplane first?
Really now, don't you other shalshdotters have better things to do than whine about the evils of software patents?
I'll bet you're the same people who whine about Bill Gates making tons of money with buggy software. Oh! Sorry I forgot. You ARE the same people.
Get used to it. You live in America. The smart AND ambitious will outlive the armchair pundits and philosophers. It's called evolution. If you spent have the time working and *thinking* that you spend complaining then maybe YOU will make lots of money or have lots of sex or whatever's important to you.
Just leave it alone. I am SO SICK of coming on/. to see something interesting and so often instead it's just this tired old rehash of the same gripes. What's this, the third patent bitch session this week?
Yeah, mod me off topic. Fucking idiot. The topic was the world's 80th fastest computer and I replied. 'who gives a shit' which is very much on topic because it's a waste to come on/. to see interesting stuff and see this crap instead.
The world's 80th fastest computer was unveiled today. Well I keep submitting articles about the world's 1st worst broadband service, NZ Telecom Jetstream and they never get posted.
I mean really now... the world's *80th* fastest and that's important enough to get posted? Slashdot just keeps getting better and more relevant by the day.
A typical/.er ignoring the facts. Trademarking the name 'Windows' in the context in which it was trademarked was perfectly valid. It's like saying anyone can call themselves IBM because the words, 'International' 'Business' 'Machines' are common words.
I wish people here would get it fucking right.
And if you were smart enough to get software patents, you would agree. If you have software patents of your own and want to disagree go ahead and disagree, otherwise keep it to yourself and quit whining about software patents and Microsoft being evil and do something useful for others.
Anyone who's writing a commercial game wants to know what the card is capable of. The benchmark is saying that the card is capable of high performance in certain areas. That's good enough for me.
Quit whining and RTFA.
... we have Telecom. Every bit as bad as I've submitted to/. in the past.
Here we get a monthly bill based on number of hours usage. No IP's that we used (or that used us) or anything. a simple time counter. Last two bills I paid were each bigger than my mortgage.
If my kid manages to install Kazaa (would I? Never!) my bill goes through the roof.
Guess NZ isn't big enough for/. posts because believe me, I've posted on Telecom before/
Hey that's pretty creative. Maybe you should patent that. Oh...wait a minute, prior art. So just what flavor are we sampling tonight? Or is it a toe jam night?
Quit your whining about software patents. Just because you're not smart enough to come up with anything novel yourself, don't denigrate the people who come up with the ideas.
I've got 11 patent apps currently in for software stuff that I *worked* to think of and while you're busy trying to figure out the flavor of the latest booger you managed to pick I'll be able to look at those lovely patents on my wall and know I earned them.
Quit crying on Slashdot and do something useful. Advance the art yourself instead of complaining about the people who earned the right to charge license fees by being more clever than you.
I heard the poor lady was pretty badly burned and scarred for life. What makes you sure it was frivolous? Anecdotal evidence? The press? I bet you don't even know what the fuck you're talking about when you go throwing around crap like that.
Can't wait until my patent apps are approved. Whine all you want, but I'll have mine hanging on the wall and damn proud of them and the rest of you be damned!
Maybe if you were smart enough to get patents you might change your tune. Sure I know there will be one or two with patents who will disagree with me, but the vast majority of you can cry all you want. If I thought of something first, then I own it and you're going to pay me to use it.
Great for prototyping. Horrible for large projects. Try debugging nested loops. What a friggin mess. Anyone who suggests LabVIEW for anything other than a one-day project should be shot. I spent (wasted) 1 1/2 years doing a commercial project with it.
Seems nice at first, but slowly you very quickly get diminishing returns from it. I'd rather do stuff in assembler. At least I can see what the fuck's going on.
Optimization sucks because who the hell knows what NI does under the hood.
Go with VB or C/C++ or ANYTHING before LabVIEW. Please.
I wrote a program for a commercial researchers' data collection tool in LabView. Still shipping so I won't mention the name, but MAN did it suck.
Anyone who's written anything in LabView can just try imagine writing a major commercial product in it. Try debugging pictures....lots of fun.
Just stick with the bloody VB stuff. At least Basic was designed to do stuff. Delphi is pascal which was meant for teaching programming. If you really want to do stuff use Visual C++. At least it's mature and certainly has more people to ask for help than GCC.
I hate MS, too, but I'm a realist. Stick with it. Suck it up.
I won't 'shut the fuck up'. The idea is great. The idea that this should be on slashdot is stupid because it pretty fucking obviously only interests a tiny percentage of slashdot users. I personally and a lot of others have unsuccessfully submitted many many articles which hold much more interest for a lot more people than this fucking article does.
And why are you anonymous? Afraid to let someone know who's telling them to 'shut the fuck up'? I'm NZYank and I'm telling you to 'shut the fuck up'. Stupid asshole.
I can just imagine Joe Cocker unwinding on one of these after a concert. I'd give the thing two minutes in his hands.

sorry for the typoes in the last. It's just that the constant whining get's so annoying that I just can't type it out fast enough.

If you had the brains you would be generating IP instead if whining about it.

See my post later on about NZ Telecom. If we were in the US (where I'm from originally) I'd have started a class action against those bastards.
