  1. It's a good choice for all students. It might not be the best choice for a minority who want to do more with their devices, but I suspect those will find a way, like we did when I was in school and all the computers ran MS windows. My kids use a chromebook for school. Their learning materials are online.

I'm in NZ, although we homeschool so this isn't something that directly affects us at the moment. The previous government here changed from centralized IT purchasing for schools to shcools being able to negociate individually. Microsoft and others naturally took advantage of this and so education IT spending has been too high - hopefully this is a reversal.

The problem is that we've set up our economic and social lives around a level of technology and energy consumption. If the aeroplane had never been invented then the problem wouldn't exist, people wouldn't miss going on holiday to far off destinations. Now we can't see a way to roll it back.

Of course there is a way to roll it back. Gradually increase taxes such that those activities cost slightly more against income each year, and adjust the tax base to bring down inequality. But both are politically difficult and probably would have needed to have been in place years ago to have the required effect.

Now we're looking at radical changes to get to where is needed. And that won't happen.

I agree about nuclear though, we should have been building that out, either as a permanent solution or a long term bridge gap to replace coal/gas.

If I understand correctly yes its too little too late. If we completely stopped our emissions today due to the lag between CO2 levels and temperature increase we'll still get at least 0.7C of additional warming, and probably more because the CO2 emitted per year has been going up until last year. And we're not going to stop any time soon. Then there's the feedback effects which I don't think we're completely clear on until they happen - but once we get into the state where those predicted feedback mechanisms are in play then we no longer have control anyway.

It might not wipe us out, but I think it puts a limit on our current civilization, lifestyle and population. Personally I think it will wipe us out. (Other) life will carry on though as it has always seemed to manage to do.

Take the known strengths of bone and muscle, assume an animal shaped like the largest dinosaurs, apply the square cube law, and you get the maximum possible size and mass for an animal of that shape.

    And, wait for it...

It turns out that maximum possible size and mass is just a tiny bit BIGGER than the biggest known dinosaurs!</quote>

Dinosaurs are a different shape to mammals.

  11. That doesn't make sense. Just because people are hypocrites and also live in the modern world where its not usually possible to avoid these behaviours doesn't mean the problem does not exist. It's still a real issue.

It'd still be a real issue if we didn't know anything about it. We do know about it, we're just not (seriously) doing anything about it.

I imagine they did implement the feature wanting it to be useful to end users and never put in a message because they couldn't agree on the wording. You can think up those scenarios where they're all sitting around arguing about whether or not each particular way of saying it would make the customer feel like this, or put Apple in this light.

Then they decide to defer the wording and release the feature, seeing as its ready to go.

I've worked on and off from home for 6 years, mostly on. While I do occasionally miss the social side, being available to my family is more important. We go to lunch as a family often, I take walks, work from the local cafe, and if I feel a mental block I do some gardening.

Commutes are killers, especially if you need to use a car. I don't think people really weight up the cost of these commutes to their health and wallet.
