It's time to dig that moat around the dwelling. I see troubled times ahead.
Better get the old armor oiled and ready and my sword sharped.
Fear not my computing princess, thou shalt not be captured by them evil corporated demons!
I believe he means the transfer of info combined with human nature.
IMO it isn't slowing down science that's going to save the world. At best it'll give us a few extra decades or even centuries, but eventually someone will discover how to use a doomsday technology in his basement.
I think the solution lays in changing how we look at the world, how we look at other people. As long as there is hostility between countries, or between nations and groups of people there will be the risk of catastrofical events. Slowing down science or hiding information isn't going to change that.
The war against terrorism could prove an usefull experiment in this direction. If the US can solve this problem, it'll lead to more knowledge to solve the problem. However for that to work the US will need to use other means than just militairy force. They'll need to find and remove the reason why so many people hate the US.
I wouldn't want to put my gaming pc on the internet, because then I would have to worry about viruses, which means I have to install a firewall, virus scanner etc which would just slow down my game play. A gaming system works like it should. I don't have to make sure I have the newest video card, all games will work. It plays games with no blue screens, drivers to intall, or patches.
I agree, consoles players really miss out on all the fun.
Seriously, back when Doom was new, I had the most fun with messing with all those drivers to get it run on a 486 with 4Mb ram. Ah, those were the days.
In my opinion, PC games still beat consoles because of the extra's. Many games let you make your own levels and mods (Duke3D and Half Life for example) Or let you modify parts of the game (adding your own sounds to Worms).
As adults we take responsibility, but the book doesn't hide its disgust as the industry preys on kids, all while school administrators look the other way because the school gets badly needed cash.
I think this says something about today's society. There are better ways to get cash than to sell your soul to the industry. IMO it seems like we're less and less social creatures. We've lost something through the decades, something that used to bind the people of a community together. In my oppinion it's not the industry we should be fighting, it's our social alienation that's the enemy.
In the old days such a school administrator would have to answer painful questions of angry parents if they would pull off such a stunt, but on the other hand those parents would have been willing to help said school when needed.
I guess this could be solved if parents, school administrators and teachers got back together again on the same side.
I wonder. Has anyone ever thought of putting together a portable generator?
A small internal combustion motor like those used in RC cars powering a small alternator, add some electronics and presto!: portable power source.
Might be a bit noisy though.
How about using decent ventilation? Any electronic device contains materials that are very unhealty. But I doubt any of that would be really such a hazard if you'd provide sufficent ventilation and occationaly use a vacuum cleaner in the way they were intended to use.
Just look at what a single factory dumps in the air. I'd be more worried about that.
You wish. GWB will be re-elected. He'll drop elections altogether and will be the new Emperor of the US for life. Then he'll become immortal.
Picture that!
(sorry I'm a bit annoyed by that damn election death tree spam here (local election crap, not the US elections) and destroying someones brain does make me feel a bit better.)
Schrödinger's Cat was a thought experiment to demonstrate that the uncertainty principle could have macroscopic effects.
The uncertainty principle dictates that you can't measure something without influencing it (e.g. a thermometer's reservoir doesn't have the same temperature as the liquid you're measuring and therefore will change the temperature a little bit).
My example means you can't (remotely) "measure" if a webserver is still operating, without sending a datapacket to it. If the server was already at the very edge of its capabilities, your ping could push it over the edge and/. it. Doesn't that qualify as influencing your "measurement"?
Another application of the uncertainty principle. How do you know if the site is/.ed if don't click the link. But when you click the link you chance the process, since your click might be the one that caused the/. effect.
Now how do I get that damn cat hooked up?
I doubt this is going to give real trouble. Consider this, if we're immortal all those long term problems (overpopulation, global warming,...) are suddenly problems we are going to suffer from and not just a nameless, faceless distant decendant. Doesn't that give you reason to start working on a decent solution?

yeah, students with gigabit 'net connection, now that must be good for grades.
It is, if you can see 3 hours worth of porn in under 5 minutes. That does leave you another 2h50 minutes of extra time to study.
(For those who're about to point out that 3 houres minus 5 minutes equals 2h 55 minutes: I assume 5 minutes to clean up. I mean, you do wash your hands afterwarts, right?)
Why not? It's only 8h on a plane. Plus several more to the correct state. Assume 4h being there.... Yes, I guess I could make it back in time for saturday.
The world isn't going to end. Plain simple. Why? Because I've got a gf now. If *that* didn't cause the end of the world, nothing will.

I've droped IE completly. Mozilla is the way to go.
With other words, you're replacing yourself with a very small shell script.

But I think that sentence mend they need/want more funding.
