Violent movies and games all have ratings in place designed to keep such material out of the hands of minors, yet everyone pretty much ignores them. ( Fail to see the point of a regulation, rule or law if no one enforces it )
It's amusing to hear people whine about the availability of such material while, at the same time, they have no issues purchasing it for their kiddos to play / watch.:|
Pro Tip: Be a parent and quit relying on the government to do your job for you.
Going to go full disagreement with you on this one.
While illegal as hell and very much sitting in the banned category, I can rattle off a list of drugs as long as my arm that are far too easy for folks to obtain on a moments notice.
Guns will fall into the same category. You ban or limit them, folks will just obtain them from unofficial sources and the black-market will love you for it. Or folks will just turn to other methods to deal pain and death to one another. We've been killing each other for thousands of years and we've become quite efficient at it.
Besides being a relatively modern trend, what's most interesting is that a vast majority of these shooters have all been on some sort of psychiatric medication at some point or another.
What really bugs me is why this is a modern problem. Kids have always been bullied in school. Most kids I knew always had access to all sorts of firearms, yet the whole school shooting thing didn't really take off until the Columbine Duo. Gun access hasn't changed, kiddos getting bullied hasn't changed. . . . . so what has ?
The administration of psychiatric drugs to kiddos and media sensationalism are the two things off the top of my head. Different parenting standards ? Society just going to shit ?
Perhaps, some of the folks who don't bother with " responsible disclosure " simply know what we are just now learning about.
It's easier and cheaper for the Company in question to simply sue, or threaten to sue, any individual who dares to shine a light on a security flaw. As a result, why be nice about it ?
If you can't coerce them with a carrot, there is always the stick.
A true* AI is an achievement level on par with the wheel, the discovery of fire, writing, mathematics, nano-technology and nuclear power. The moment a true AI is born, for better or worse, the world will never be the same. Future generations will note the past as Pre or Post-AI.
Any and all research needs to be fully transparent and transcend all our petty disagreements we have with each other.
*True AI = Fully sentient artificial life. Not the bullshit plethora of if / then statements we have today.
There is no do over here. No second chances. We get one shot to do it right.
One of my favorite quotes sums it up perfectly:
Dr. Ian Malcolm: John, the kind of control you're attempting simply is... it's not possible. If there is one thing the history of evolution has taught us it's that life will not be contained. Life breaks free, it expands to new territories and crashes through barriers, painfully, maybe even dangerously, but, uh... well, there it is.
The inability to easily change out the battery coupled with the knowledge that at least Apple is / was slowing down their older phones means it doesn't matter if we have reached peak Smartphone or not.

Add a financial " prize " for computing X number of cycles or blocks in the SETI project and folks will be more than happy to help you out. ( assuming your prize >= crypto currency mining )
How does getting a flu shot with a protein shell sequence of X ( which is how your bodies immune system knows what it is ) do anything for a mutated strain that has a shell sequence of Y ?
It's like an anti-virus program looking for a checksum of X ( Holy Shit! A virus ! SMASH ) while it lets the mutated version with a checksum of Y right in the door with a VIP pass.
Your body doesn't even KNOW it's a problem until it's kicking your ass.
Now if you get a Strain X shot today and Strain X happens to be the flavor going around a few years down the road, I can understand how it helps protect you as you already have the antibodies present for that particular sequence. But if it mutates at all, you're back to square one so I'm curious how it helps to " lessen the symptoms " since the body has to wait until the virus is in full blown payload delivery mode to mount any sort of defense against it.
You medical types should remember we don't speak Pharmacology or Micro-Biology lingo, so explain it like us non-medical types can understand it.

if you are taking photos in an area where " the situation is dire " enough that you need encryption for your photos, then you are also in an area where they will beat the shit out of you until you give up your passcode / keys to unlock them. Or they will just take your camera and no one will ever see you or your compromising photos ever again. Encrypted or not.
Very few will buy the " Reporters Special Edition " camera for this feature because it will slow the camera down. A camera with encryption in it limits where it can be sold and would only appeal to a very tiny niche market. I don't see camera vendors getting too excited about this.
Raw files in modern cameras are already touching 100MB in size ( Nikon D850 ) depending on the sensors resolution. Encrypting that would take time which would probably kill one of the selling points of many cameras: framerate.
A flagship Nikon D5 raw file sizes are only ~40MB in size due to lower resolution sensor, but it can take 12 images per second, so your encryption would need to keep up with 480MB / sec if you want things encrypted before landing on the card.
I suppose you could do so after the images arrive on the card but it would eat up processor cycles doing so ( slowing the camera ) unless you add a custom chip to offload it to.
Then comes the whole making software work with your encryption scheme. Is bad enough we have different flavors of raw files from different vendors, now you want to add encryption into the mix ? Good Luck.
it's just no one with the authority to do so has the spine to make the decisions necessary to make it happen.
Well, that and *campaign donations* tend to ensure the status quo remains the status quo.
"Hard as it might be, reducing healthcare's burden on the economy while improving outcomes for employees and their families would be worth the effort."
The only thing you need to do is take away the health care and Big Pharma industries ability to charge whatever they want for their products or services and you'll stop this problem stone cold.
You need only speak the words that shall not be spoken ( Regulation ) within earshot of said industries and watch how quickly they'll be willing to compromise on what they charge. They do for a while until the latest scandal becomes a fleeting memory, then it's right back to business as usual.
Quit threatening it and just do it.
When a single trip to the hospital is capable of bankrupting all but the insanely rich, it's time to burn it down and rethink the issue.
I don't want, nor need, vouchers, coupons or reduced insurance premiums that do nothing but increase over the long term. Fix the problem at its source and you fix the " economic burden " it has become.
When people have more money in their pockets to spend on something other than ludicrously priced healthcare, the economy tends to benefit from it.
I disabled all my auto-update crap on the Windows 10 Pro unit I do have. ( Wacom Cintiq, no choice on the OS ) Also disabled all the updates for my Win 7 machines.
Not about to play guinea pig for a rushed patch to fix a problem they've known about for some time. I'll give it six months, then consider it once all the problems are ironed out.
" That's odd. My pirated copies work just fine. No problems here. "
I just can't bring myself to trust pirated software anymore. I got burned too many times during my Amiga days with all sorts of evil shit that came hidden / bundled with the Yarr Matey versions.
I don't really care for the subscription model, but I use Adobe's software too much to avoid it.
I greatly dislike the fact that Adobe keeps open / talking connections back to their servers at all times. Even more annoying that it's encrypted so I can't see what is going out. I let it talk initially, then a script kills the active processes for the remainder of the session.
I have experimented with Photoshop alternatives, but I find their performance is seriously lacking ( Wacom Mobile Studio Pro platform ) in comparison.
Capture One Pro ( v11 is latest ) works very well for a Lightroom replacement though I don't typically shoot 5k shots that I then have to sort through.
Now, Autodesk can just kiss my ass on their Maya / Max subscription systems. ( I like how they bought and then discontinued Softimage just so they could remove any potential competitors )
Last I checked, they were around the $1500 / year mark ( for a subscription ) and that price is why I got serious about Blender.

I guess it's time for companies / government to make a choice:
Cost vs Security.
Real security is expensive and not something you can cut corners on if you're serious about it.

Microsoft would turn off or disable all the silly unnecessary bullshit running in the background.
Cortana, all the Telemetry crap, and probably a big chunk of all the running processes that are enabled by default.
Because Comcast sells their internet with TV bundles at a cheaper rate than standalone internet.
Thus, folks technically have cable, but only for the overall discount it gives for internet access.
It allows Comcast to fluff their numbers for cable subscribers.
In addition, if you want internet here, your choices are:
Verizon DSL ( complete shit )
Satellite ( expensive, latency, and capped )
Wireless ( data plans are $$$ and capped )
Comcast
So, why do you THINK people go with Comcast at all ?

This isn't about DMCA, Copyright, et. al.
It's about fan run servers taking away a future potential business angle and the profits it would provide.
Cue the " Tablet Computing is dying ! " claims . . . .
Though I wouldn't worry about it, according to the media PC Computing has been dead or dying for years yet still seems to soldier on . . . . :|

is they're simply determining what the connection speed is between you and the AP. ( 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac )
There is no way to know the bandwidth between the AP and the router / ISP without connecting to it and physically checking it.
It will have one hell of a time determining mine as I disable wi-fi unless I need it while I'm out and about.
Malware will hit locally owned data just as hard and fast as it will Cloud data. The hospitals hit recently with the ransomware crap comes to mind.
Make sure your Cloud provider is doing backups or, better yet, use more than one provider.
as long as the data is fully encrypted while sitting on or traversing cloud networks.
If they decrypt / encrypt it locally on the client or even a hospital owned proxy server, then the data should be fine.
At no point should this type of data reside on the cloud or the connecting networks outside of the hospital in any unencrypted form.
I believe was the game where they intentionally borked all the cybernetic implants to force folks to install the update / patch.
Which they then used to create mass havoc.
lol
Think I'll forgo the patch for now.
The folks who still have access to the Snowden Files should release a few more in case the people have forgot why this legislation is such a bad idea.
Believe the title was " I am Legend "
Short version was they genetically engineered the measles virus to cure cancer.
It didn't quite go to plan.
