using CDE cuts my productivity. given the choice between a good HP workstation running CDE and a good PC running linux - i'll take the linux box for the UI alone.
weirdly - my kde3.1 setup looks so much like cde that's it confuses cde users... and the cde users look at my linux box as a toy.
i was thinking that this was why hp was ditching gnome. the established cde users see gnome as eye-candy from a toy os. nothing really to do with cde or gnome... more just momentum
On the other hand. The compelling thing about the internet is the open access to information and the ability to communicate cheaply (email, chat, etc.)
I don't think the internet would have reached critical mass if there would have been hidden fees around every corner.
That business model just wouldn't have worked. I won't even do a free registration to read the times. There is no way I would have done a pay-per-view on it.
butt who nose?

I've always thought that we've dehumanized the people that are basically doing the job of a robot dispensing these goods.
Fast food is the perfect example. I don't really consider what I do there human interaction.
1) wait in line 2) exchange token greeting 3) make bad joke (no reponse from server) 4) order by number 5) give money 6) get food 7) leave
Hehe - I remember using FVWM and tkgoodstuff and being amazed when there was gui configuration at all:)
I have to agree about the configuration consistency. The multiple themes (GTK/Window Manager) is a problem that is going to have to be solved for Gnome to move forward as a desktop machine.
I can't imagine telling my mom to change themes, not not THAT theme, the other theme. You know the widget theme. A widget? Widgets are the buttons and text inside the windows. Ya the other theme is for the window manager. Oh it has it's own little buttons that aren't controlled by the widget themes......
The changes in GNOME2 must be deeper than screenshots can show. Those look rather like enlightenment wanna be shots (to me).
I think that screenshots have become less and less important as Gnome and KDE have grown. It all looks pretty much the same (or very different with themes). But it really doesn't tell much of the story as far as speed and useability.
I know what you mean. I think he doesn't mean to come across as strong as he does.
He might be more effective if he would say something like 'your source code is profitting company X. they are using it to enforce a per seat license on users. if this upsets you, you should release it under GPL.'
You have obviously not been hanging out witht he same french women as me.
So after using this a few times i wonder how this would condition my brain?
everytime i see the msn butterfly i smell the residual stink of 1000 people?
or
everytime i go to the bathroom i think of bill gates?
kind of disturbing either way.
these are pretty rapid in c/c++/fortran already...
;)
argc, argv and a case statement
I drove by this last weekend and had no idea what these folks were up to. Alas my curiosity is satisfied.
I thought it was a kid thing... turns out it was a big kid thing.
No I just have to find a use for my old heat sink.
hmmmmm. It's twice the size of my car's radiator maybe I can overclock my Yugo.
I hear what you're saying but...

I've been thinking of trying FBSD on an empty partition. I was going to install 5.0 but this mention of 4.8 has me a bit confused.
Is it 4.X the convservative path? Is 5.0 still to new?
seems to me that i heard a number more like 60 fps for simulations.
i know these guys shot for 60 Hz..

I thought they came clean years ago?
I remember watching a 60 minutes on it years ago...
They sell these at CompUSA for 20 bucks.
I think it's a little better than the Dell Quiet Key...
I'm not sure that our courts have failed. Didn't they do what they were supposed to do?
Maybe it's our economic system that is failing or is it? Maybe the way our system is setup large corps rise to the top.
I don't know. It's hard to blame the court when people are willing to dish out the cash for the OS.

now i remember why i thought vi was so easy to learn.
Don't listen to this guy. The 80s are back!
:)
It's retro, you could sell it on EBay for a fortune
How about doing a screen capture of your browser and printing the image with gimp or some other paint program?
that should have been that my needs are not that complex

Did you read the post?
The part about it depends on who your talking to.
Multiple desktops are not obvious to a newbie. The desktop is not obvious to a newbie.
If somebody is unfamiliar with a computer - then I would say that multiple desktops are not obvious to them.
I am amazed that you are amazed at that.
I haven't tried Gnome2 yet.
When you say that you can do 90% (KDE) and 50% (GNome2) of what you normally do what do you mean?
Can you give an example?
For me I with a little fiddling I can do 100% either way, but maybe my needs are that complex.
Is it desktop setup or applications that you can't do?
Everybody knows that software is like bread and Gnome 2.0 is BRAND new. So it's much fresher than KDE3.0.
KDE3.0 has been out for months - surely it is getting stale by now!

Oh dear - I guess this means I am becoming and old geezer.
hehe,
I agree my geek budget is woefully underfunded....
XScale - apparently that is the strongArm?
