    Paper: that colorful junk which you have to move from that box outside your house (a "mailbox") to your trash-can every day.

    Unfortunately I don't know what the RSA patent you mention actually covers. But I would say that if RSA's patents prevent me from siting down with a 50 year old number theory book and working out my own competing encryption system, then yes it is eeeeevil.

    Frankly I still don't understand any of this. Why was it legal to create the JPEG format, which obviously does the same thing (from a user perspective) as GIF, when it was not legal for Barnes and Noble to implement their own version of one-click?

    My gut feel is that all software patents are bad because computer science is just too young a field. The government doesn't need to encourage basic research in software, it will happen anyway.

    It really isn't worth downloading, much less listening to.

    A fan asks Hamil about movies 7, 8, 9. Hamil replies with some stories about filming the original movies. He mentions that George's original idea involved 4 trilogies (12 movies). He also mentions that somebody said to him "Hey they're doing 7,8,9!" But he doesn't say who that person was.

    Welcome to party politics (which the Electoral College was expressly designed to avoid).
    Do you mind explaining that statement? I fail to see the connection. My understanding was that the founders couldn't come to an agreement on how to pick the president, so they just gave up and let the states deal with it.

    Or it might just be buggy. I can't get it to work on XP Professional. Or rather it did install. And I successfully ran it once, but couldn't get it to run a second time. No error message, the process just exits before showing a window. It doesn't even have a working uninstaller, so I had to use a old restore point to go back to WMP9.

    I recomend waiting a bit longer before downloading this "upgrade".

    I must be stupid. Took me forever to figure out what "raeogenosris" was supposed to mean. I think that effect works because we don't use big words that often.

    You missed the footnote:

    Fine he doesn't go into detail comparing languages, but that wasn't the purpose of the paper. Get over it.

    It sounds like they want to use the declarative programing paradigm (e.g. Prolog). Would you agree with that classification or is this a truly novel idea?

    Declarative is effective in some domains (I would classify regular expressions as declarative programming). But I hesitate to believe that it is the best tool for all problems. Even if you ignore performance issues.

    And, with me, the attempted worked very well. Until now I haven't worried about updates for firefox, but reading that I started worrying, "Ack! did I miss one? What update happened this morning?".

    Regarding the shell:// update. Happening only on Windows does not a Windows problem this bug make.

    Programs which take input from unknown sources must validate that input in a 'default deny' fashion. I don't mean that FireFox sucks because of one error, but denying culpability for the error leads to the dark side.

    The "folder" part of this is documented as part of the IE anchorClick Behavior.

    Behaviors, as I recall, were an invention which allow websites to act more like locally installed applications, without actually installing an ActiveX control. Brilliant idea Microsoft, well done.

    If you must use IE, it is probably best to set the "Internet zone" to high security (which breaks this exploit). And then make liberal use of the "trusted sites" list.

    Recompile with WineLib is what they mostly have working now. They ARE integrating an emmulator to allow the execution of x86 binaries. But that is not ready for use.

    Going public doesn't necessarily change the working philosophy of the leaders of the company. Google has stayed alive for a long time without using the anoy-tactics other sites use.

    But one of Cringley's comments does cause me some concern. And he doesn't even seem to see the irony in it:

    It also wouldn't be so bad if they offered a copy protection system which didn't require me to go to my cd rack, and pop in the correct cd just to start the game. This guy doesn't think it is a big deal and just blows off the question, but I find it quite anoying (my DVD-rom sounds like a jet engine for one thing).

    I would be happy to register my copy and let the game open an SSL connection to their server whenever I didn't feel like poping the cd in.

    You need to be in the administrators context to be able to do that. yes? And certainly with admin access, you own the machine.

    The unfortunate thing is the number of people browsing the web and running ActiveX controls with their administrator account.
