  1. Re:I don't believe it on 10-year-old Microsoft Ticket Resurfaces? · · Score: 1

    True Story.
The day I joined my previous job (as a junior test enginerr) I found an issue on the software I was working on. I filed a ticket requesting a change. It got assigned to person X who was working in the US office. Person X later quit, moved to India and then joined our Indian operations.I moved into the development team and worked on the same software for 2 years without fixing that issue. I quit my company later after 5 years and on the day I quit, apparently the tracking tool sent out emails to all people (and their managers) including person X to close out their issues.
I can only imagine the look on his face on having to work on an issue exactly 5 years and 1 month old.

I went there after hours. And since we were with someone who rang the opening bell that day, had a small party on the floor
So I am not sure what it would be like during trading hours. But I talked to a few people who worked there and they all said that the place was nothing like it was years ago (or even like what it was a year ago). The only poeple who are left there are the specialist traders, most of the big players had moved out. And from reading the article, it appears that the room I was in was the blue room and the extended blue room was already half closed in late August (I am not sure which room it was, but I remember the paint was blue).

It is not that trivial a case.
I visited the trading floor (of which not much exists now -compared to past) in August. The desktops the traders used were Windows XP - Linux in an equal split. Presumably the back-end servers is what they are talking about here which according to the story was Unix. So it is a case where Microsoft had managed to get a foothold in a Unix only shop in the desktop and failed to leverage their monopoly power to capture the Server market.

It's pure economics After a few years working in the tech industry I finally went and joined a B School. So i now feel competent to comment about this :-)

There is a possible reason why Boston might decide to avoid scalping in certain forms.Basically to avoid monopolies

Assume that there are 50,000 seats in the stadium and that the tickets are being sold at $10. The total revenue is then 500,000. Also assume that this $10 is exactly what would result when free market conditions prevail.

But what happens when a scalper can buy ALL of those tickets? Scalper pays 500,000 and arbitrarily sets a price of $1000 for each ticket. There would still be 1000 people or so who still can buy tickets. So the scalper makes a profit of 1000 * 1000 -500,000 = 500,000 dollars. But the society bears a "deadweight" loss on this monopoly situation since the stadium has now just 1000 people!!

What's happening is that in an "inelastic market" (one where some people will buy tickets at any cost), it is profitable to act like a monopoly rather than as in a free market and which is what some of these scalpers end up doing

In the specific case it might not be true, the $10 prices may be below the market average because the teams have other ways (merchandise etc.) to get this money back from the fans.

I would'nt know about the syndrome you are talking about, but as a smoker, I can assure you that the concentration part of it is temporary. In the beginning, you smoke a cigarette and then you can concentrate well for like 3 hours. Later it becomes 2 hours and then 1.A cigarette on the average lasts about 6-7 minutes... After a point of time it becomes so that you are not concentrating if you are not smoking. Atleast this was the case with me. I did get a good 3-4 years out of it though. A good control experiment for this would be a person who only smokes when he needs to concentrate and never smokes due to cravings, but I am not sure we can find such a person.
