Nope. When the Nazis were tried (in Nuremberg IIRC) it was concluded that the soldiers were responsible for their actions and could not justify their actions based on the explanation that they were just following orders.
I am not trying to compare SCO to pre-WW2 germany , just clarifying a point. Please don't invoke Godwins law.
Hmmm... I would think that SCO employees should realize that there is no future in SCO anyway. They are no more a development company, they are a pure litigation company. Its pretty much assured that they are going to be "let go" after sometime anyway. Might as well quit now and score some "nice guy" credits.
This sort of a discussion came up about Hillary rosen also (It was in the/. story when she quit). The question was whether she can be a nice person and still work for RIA. After a long chain of arguements I think the final conclusion was that if she had morals she should quit. Now the SCO employees might not be getting paid as well, but the situation seems qualitatively same.
Or maybe she is saying that we will be wearing 20% more dresses. A large (though probably not 20%) percentage of the US and Europe has cellphones, and I would assume they carry it round with them. It would be great if one could integrate it into clothing, maybe removably , just a new pocket with wires running into it would do. Include handhelds, mp3 players and even a small computer and there is a large market of applicances which can possibly be integrated into clothes. Add vision goggles and probably your shirts, pants, glasses and watch can easily get more wired probably taking it upto a possible 20%. Or you could use RIAA maths if that doesnt work
Ok, I bothered to follow up most of your links (not all, too many of them). The thing about "constructive criticisms not being appreciated" - I checked through the links (last link in 9th para) . I can't understand why that counts as "not being appreciated ". The mailer posted a list of problems he had (he probably had it for a long time). Some developer took time to rtack each of them down and pointed that most were known issues. He pointed out that he was working on them and said he cannot fix it by Mandrake 9.0. If you read the ars article and the release notes, most of the issues have been actually fixed (example the panel on top cannot be moved - fixed in 2.4). The parent post was composed sometime ago so maybe the poster did not know .
Also there is no reason to complain that the development team is biased towards the average user and is ignoring the expert users. The newbies are paying for it and they get it. As a benefit to the experts, they get free code. That is good enough for me . If I want something I either pay or make it myself, free code on which to start from is a bonus, not a right.
BTW , did I fall for a clever troll?
As usual. We'll pay but we don't admit we did anything wrong.
That makes sense especially in a case like this.If they don't put a note like that in there it means that somebody can use this settlement as a basis for further lawsuits, something along the lines of "they made a mistake , admitted it by settling but did not pay me enough".That is definitely not OK , since the reason for settling is to avoid further lawsuits. The case really has no merit.
Well that is all the more reason not to take that 5 dollars.
By taking 5 dollars, you are being party to an unnecessary and frivolos (sp?) lawsuit, I would not take that cash.Feels like taking stolen money. This opt-out thing is painful though, I would have preferred an opt-in. And on top of that you have to agree to their new all inclusive service agreement (though I don't know how legal such a contract is ).
Funniest thing is that this person posted it on slashdot. Boy he does have an axe to grind against register.com.Its like bragging that you managed to con somebody and asking others to join in the fun
The article says sun was co-founded by Scott mcneally an Bill Joy. Actually there were 4 of them out of which 2 have already quit. So with the third guy on the way out it leaves only Scott behind.
Bill Joy can easily take a lot of credit for Java though
Funny, I find the exact opposite to be true.
Visual studio I find is a very nice IDE (if you must use an IDE that is ). And I find windows programming to be a pain compared to Linux since I need to constantly refer to the documentation to find out how to do things (okay, I am slightly familiar with what you call "intricate details" in linux if I don't I can always do an "pinfo" on it ). More importantly I hate the fact that windows wont allow you to move even slightly away from what they decide you are allowed to do. Linux on the other hand is a nice mix of smaller pieces I can string together.
Anybody else remember what a pain it was to process multipart/binary in asp sometime ago ? You had to write atleast 30 lines of code to just save a binary that some user had uploaded to a webpage
I hope I'm doing groklaw a favor, check out the original link when things calm down a bit please.
The site is under a creative commons license and so yes, you can copy it I think.
Anyway I was wondering who this groklaw is, that all Sco stories seem to link to, then I did some googling and apparently it is a personal blog by a paralegal who si a slashdotter. So how come she isnt posting these comments? Or is she this AC ? An interview with her is Here . The first decent weblog I have seen, I think
BTW why is this slashdot story under YRO ? What has it got to do with my rights? Its pure FUD me says,.
Naah.. ! These attacks, if they are for real are your average Trojan horse attacks. When you have true "rootkit" kind of attacks based on windows inside information , you wouldnt even really know since the attack code gets into the kernel. Based on the simplicit of attacks this might be not based on inside info.
I posted this somewhere else in the same story. The idea is that none of the "big" shops will preinstall Linux on a "desktop" box.But they will call it a "workstation" and will happily put linux on it. Workstations tend to be higher end desktops but with a better GPU and most importantly some sort of management chip monitoring the health of the machine, and are sold to businesses.
The big consiracy theory I have is that the contract with M$ says something like "you shall not sell a computer without an OS license to a ordinary customer" and probably some clause about Linux not being a license etc. But when you sell to businesses you can't have that since the businesses already have a 100 per seat OS licenses they bought from M$ and have no need of an extra OEM license. So the companies sell them the bare machines (or Linux preinstalled or something else like netware), and this is where servers and Workstations come in. The desktops which are sold to Joe-Sixpack always go with an OS.
The links you pointed to are mainly to the server lines of dell...
Remember the old story about Dell putting in DOD floppies in their servers so that they will have some OSes shipping with all servers?
Workstations and servers really don't count. Dell, IBM and HP all will happily sell you those boxes with full support too. here is a Dell Link. Note that dell will not put linux on a desktop box at all (or maybe MS wont let them do it), but happily puts it on servers.
I think this is somehow related to the OEM contract with M$ tho don't know how it works out.
You are being slightly cruel to Linda Ham , she could'nt have really intentionally tried to cover her ass putting the astronauts in danger, especially considering her husband is an astronaut himself. Here is her view on things . I think she screwed up, but unfortunately (just like doctors) , her mistakes costs lives.
This older slashdot story links to this story at news.com.com.com.com...... At the bottom of that article there is some more information.
BTW you dont need to project images Midair to get 3d effects. All you need is to get the left and right eye to see different images and your brain will be confused into thinking its 3d. Just make sure a pixel appears different from LHS and the RHS and problem solved.
I submitted this story sometime ago, but got rejected. The kid actually did not write the MSBlaster worm, he modified it to make it more potent and released it. story here
With IBM behind it it shouldnt matter. IBM has the grandplan of making Linux the OS which will run across all its server lines. Look at this article for example.
Anyway competition is always a good thing, and you really don't have to move the infrastructure unless you have to. If Intel chips remain good enough, stick on to that, you probably will still be able to find support for that.
Or as Mario Puzo got the Don to sat in Godfather "You must never say no, you have to get them to say no and when you have to say it, it must appear to them that you are saying yes" .
Or something to that effect.
Apparently, the cute little robot vacuum by iRobot has siblings now!
I knew these things were intelligent and all, but procreating robots!!!
Cute, my foot!! Anyone knows how to neuter them thingies
?
India is planning to send a mission to moon by 2008, and they very well accept that it is just for the we too can factor.
Rare to see that kind of admission from politicians
Note that he was talking about g, Not G , he even mentioned the units of acceleration. This g changes from place to place and even change at the same place due to a lot of reasons. G on the other hand is taken constant and does not have units of acceleration (accelaration*distance*distance/mass ??)
No the control equipment itself was probably not running windows. The network the equipment was on had a lot of Windows boxes too, which caused the worm to crash the Network . The article never says the "main box" was running windows. Atleast I hope so.
So a Linux/Unix machine will be of little help.
A stupid , brainless worm which relies on blank scanning managed to get into the Internal network of a Nuclear powerplant.Similarly there was a report of a Halifax ATM being actually infected by the worm.
Imagine what a determined human intruder could do. All he has to really do is to setup a worm which actually sends out information about where it is and which is ready to take instructions from outside... World Domination!!!!
Unless somebody goes ahead and rules that GPL is equivalent to public domain or equal to BSD license. I wonder how much money will buy that kind of a judgement.
Man!! Talk about conspiracy theories.
What you seem to be saying is that the reason for the failure of a product is because it is too good ?
Have you considered the alternatives? like
1) OS X is fairly recent compared to other OSes and their previous OSes sucked for reliability even if usability was better. Also third party app support for older macs were less available for enterprise
2) Mac machines were underpowered till recently. With the newer chips they kick ass, but expect some time before mass adoption. Its like AMD with their cheap chips, they still are not on top.
3)Windows has had a large base of users, and along with dime a dozen MCSEs had a lot of people who could atleast claim they could support it. Linux admins are easy to find since you can always dual boot with windows
4) Marketing - Apples counterculture marketing which made it a hit with the home users have not really cut it with the PHBs (?)
5 ) Lack of third party apps .
etc. etc.
When all these possibilities are eliminated, then whatever else remains must be the truth. But until these can be eliminated I'll use the simplest explanation available
