Everyone says that, but does it really? If all OSes and their associated software had easy exploits, would it really be that hard to write a polymorphic worm?
Let me try to give an analogy. Ofcourse this deosnt prove anything but still....
In nature , when we have a monoculture, they are easily wiped out by new diseases (exception:Humans). But when we have different species there are small number of virii which infect multiple species, except when they are closely related (Lot of exceptions, rabies, smallpox, plague(?) etc. )
So this should hold true for Software when software gets relatively complex. Consider QNX to be an insect and Linux to be an elephant, difficult to have a common virus (ofcourse natural virii are, well , natural, computer viruses are artificial and are probably comparable to genetic engineering).
Another thing about OSes are that vulnerablities are discovered on different OSes at different times. there is a short timespan when there are unpatched machines across OSes (or before a relatively simpler single OS virii wipes them out), so it is a lot more difficult.
He had an unused axe which is an indicator of status. So he must be a chieftain.
He was 46 and probably a grandfather, and he had blood on his cloak trying to carry his wounded friend. So he must be a good guy
He fought and killed two of his assailants - so he is brave
Or he killed his chieftain, stole his axe, raped his daughter and was trying to kidnap her and hid in a ravine and sneakily and using "terrorist" tactics killed two of the chieftains sons
Unlikely, but possible. But then again it should be a perfectly valid thing to do, Just read hamlet.
Quilici says the team suspects blood on the back of the cloak may have come from a wounded colleague that Otzi was carrying over his shoulder. Loy says blood of two people was found on the same arrow, suggesting Otzi killed both men and retrieved the arrow.
What if he did not miss? He is shot in the back, so is his friend. He turns around retrievs(sp?) his "full speed" arrow and fires it at his assailants and kills 'em. He retrievs his arrow, tries to take his wounded friend home, but dies of the wounds (He was hit by a "hi speed" arrow so he thought it was not strong enough, little did he know of association of arrowmakers and their weird conventions) . Sure sounds like a movie script.
It sounds great. I think slashdot should trade karma for subscriber benefits.
See, Slash cant really afford to be an all-pay site since people would just move off. You cant expect somebody to pay and to post at the same time. So we have this current state of "Voluntary" payment. I would say we should allow all the high karma guys to get limited subscriber benefits, makes the "good" guys will hang around more then. Or maybe not. With karma having no real value other than +1 bonus and moderation, we still have karma-whores. Imagine the cartels and moderation rings people would set up if it could be traded for money.
Fro, this article. IBM's claim that SCO violated the GPL is the sixth of 10 counterclaims, the last four of which address patent infringement by SCO with regard to IBM's Linux products.
In the first counterclaim, IBM alleged that SCO breached contract with the "Amendment X," a modification of the original Unix contract IBM signed with AT&T in 1985. Amendment X grants IBM "irrevocable" and "perpetual" rights to Unix. By filing a suit, IBM's 45-page suit says, SCO has failed to honor the amendment made in 1996.
That settles it . We have finally decided who is the King. We have Slashdotted Kuro5hin , SCO and kernel.org all at once.
Good thing they did not link to IBM.
Nope. Novell has the original license which they sublicensed to SCO. The problem between SCO and Novell was when novell claimed that they really did not sell all their IP only some of it.
Whatever the claims, Novell is immune.
Evolution is presently distributed under the GPL, so of course Evolution in its present state can not be "closed".
If Ximian (and Novell) holds the copyrights they can release it under multiple licenses like Helix, apple etc.
The code which is already out will be open while the newer code might be not.
I really doubt that, considering how different Novell OS is. Windows an Linux are similar when it comes to native filesystems etc. In Linux we have rwx permissions, deny overrides allow for inherited rights etc. Windows has the above plus a little more. Novell on the other hand has tons of permissions and rights. For example you can give a user the rights to rename a file but not to do anything else in the folder etc.
Novell supports perl, except for the commands for directory traversal etc. If Novell could not fix it up for so long I doubt they will be able to provide full binary support.
What I think the idea is ( and what novell has been saying) is that Netware 7 will be a set of services which run on Linux. They will behave like before but the underlying OS will be netware. It shouldnt matter onto anybody since no one ever really has to work directly on the box in Netware almost everything is through a browser, and from there there will be no changes.
There was a comment on the Contiki page about something about DNS , if I understand it correctly, they have a table of some 10 websites and their IPs precompiled so that they wouldnt have to do a DNS lookup.
So you probably have to edit that table.
Second, Microsoft is accused of leveraging its dominant position from PCs into low-end servers, the computers which provide core services to PCs in corporate networks.
I wonder if this includes MS exchange?
Anyway however vague the press release is, be sure that MS is going to get more than a slap on the wrist. The guy in charge is Mario Monti, the same guy who punished GE and Jack Welsch for some issues about mergers. If you read Jack Welschs book its pretty clear this Monti chap is pretty cunning, and that this EU setup has some teeth.
They are using two kinds of voting machine, One from ECIL and another from BEL, both government owned companies(from the article). A bit of googling bought their sites up. ECIL webpage is pretty low on details, but BEL gives some info here.
Apparently no OS is used, they have coded assembly right into the chips, so virtually tamper proof.
Note that Apple and Google have generally been known to be good to the employees. Just look at the Google page for the stuff they have at office,
about TI and AT and T, I dunno. From the article it seems AT& T is doing this to get employees to work 12 hours (12 hours + 1 hr yoga =13 hrs a day at office, I think that sucks).
Please don't even try to justify the Medeival church. You will have to answer for Galileo, Coppernicus etc. You might also have to Justify the witch-hunts, burning at the stakes, Multiple pope-heresy issues etc.
Can you explain how the church led to the established the modern universities? Wikipedia says no such thing?
Anyway no point trying to correct historical mistakes.Otherwise america will have to hate the British and love the french. Also Native americans will have a lot of reason to hate the hispanics.!!
Let past be, and let us see how the church of today can be made reasonable
Amazing!! Most of the posts on Slashdot today (atleast all the 4+ modded posts ) seem to be saying "Free market wins" or "information wants to be free". It just proves that geeks are really a more liberal crowd than the average populace.
Rarely have I seen somebody stick to their beleifs of freedom and Justice when they were directly under threat. This has been a marked change from all the previous discussions on Slashdot usually based on feelings and emotions, maybe the "cycle" in the title made people think about the issues before posting? I don't know what more to say. This discussion almost sounds like a great swansong
That or the Indians have got all the mod points today.
I use Opera a lot and usually find that it is faster than IE (ive never seen IE beat Opera for speed) and I find that Opera is a lot more usable since I like to use keyboard shortcuts (love the Ctrl+Shift+Enter to open a background tab) . And I was trying to get some statistics on how Opera is faster and found this and then this I have no idea what the first one means. The second one is not technical enough. Wonder if this means Opera renders slower but due to caching and other tricks becomes faster?
I also tried opening a huge html (Lot of random text with html tags at bottom and top) files right now, sure enough Opera did it faster ???
This is hardly the way to disprove a theorem when it is based on Statistics.
If it was a normal theory, a single exception would disprove it. So yiu just have to prove that you are a Genius. You have not yet conclusively done that.
In this case, the study is based on statistics, so you not only have to be a Genius, you would have to have a few 100 married Geniuses as your friends.

A similar thing would be to fit a spray can onto this wall climbing robot.
Surprising that nobody has automated wall painting yet, then we wouldnt need to have these plain colored walls anymore. All of us could have our favorite frescos. Just get me a large res. image of the cistine chapel roof!!
Might not really work. As long as the customers of Akamai are in the US and not in India, i would think the customers can be sued for dealing with a company which breaks the US laws. It can probably be argued that the "use" of the technology happens when a US customer clicks on the webpage or something
As long as the main market for services is in US, nobody is going to break any US laws. When the rest of the world start demanding stuff, then time to start thinking of registering companies in Maldives or something and run the company from US.
RMS sez : Linus Torvalds made his kernel, Linux, free software. Others combined GNU and Linux to produce the first complete free operating system, GNU/Linux.
Doesnt BSD count?
Wait a second. Akamai sez Upto 1.42 Ghz , The MacNN screenshot says 1.6 and 1,8 Ghz.
IBM says the chips will debut at 1.8 maximum. Some say they overshot the target.
