Funny. But I seem to recall reading about 1 year ago an exploit in Symantec Anti-virus on the Mac. The exploit allowed remote access to a user's computer and was in the very program they're trying to promote to keep customer's computers secure. I believe it was patch 6 months after being reported.
Yeah. Um... hello Symantec??? No matter what press-releases you issue, I'm a long way away from buying your software.
I've bought quite a few "big" name J-POP CDs and they usually come with a DVD including music videos and a CD with the 12+ tracks. I've bought these only through major music resellers (and not the pirate copies, I don't support that).
If the content is good and there is no extra mark-up I don't mind.
IMO, I would much rather the DVD-Audio format was standardized. I can tell there's a definite better quality there (though there is a larger price difference).
If they want a price preimium, put it on a goddam disc that resists scratches, direct sunlight and feeding after midnight*.
I found that if I installed games, uninstalled them (via Control Pannel) and installed more, it would really trash the registry and then everything would go awry. I didn't tweak, mod, or add other 3rd party apps. Not that it matters anymore anyways since I don't plan on going back to Windows... too many other annoyances.
OSX seems better in this regard too. I bought AppZapper and it takes care of any apps you install a lot better than using uninstall in Windows.
I whole heartdely agree. I think the iMac G5 I bought just over 18 months ago is the single best computing purchase I have -ever- made. I previosly owned a Pentium I, PII, PIII and Athlon 64 all with some flavor of Windows factory installed. Windows plainly annoys me. If there's anything that's great about OS X, its the immunity to viruses, spyware, malware and not having to reinstall the OS every two months (hello Windows!) because of registry corruption, getting really slow, etc. OS X has save me many hours from when I would be installing Windows (and yes, I did eventually image the drive but it doesn't cover everything, nor the pain of making sure everything is backed up first).
On the one hand I would recommend a game console. Yet, as a former PC owner and gamer, I really want to see more FPS, strategy and RPG games on the Mac. I own a PS2 and they're not quite as easy to master on the game controller and I've been a gamer a long time. Shooter like MOHAA are a pain to play while the MGS series is a lot easier. Maybe its the developers, but mouse + keyboard are my preference. Subtle hint to Mac game developers: I would like to see a Jagged Alliance type military shooter, an OP Flashpoint port and a port of Ragdoll Kung-Fu. Not that I'm trying to make it formal or anything.;)
And if I go back to Windows gaming, I think it won't be on an Intel Mac. And there'd have to be a really compelling game because I'll either upgrade my PS2 to a PS3 or a Nintendo Wii. But, I'd still like the kinds of games where mouse + keyboard are made enjoyable.
Now if future DVD players will be PCs in the living room, this seems like a bad copy-protect scheme to go with. Seems to me that the computer industry should stand against this if for no other reason than potential future sales loss on (specifically branded) Windows Media Center PCs.
These computers use all kinds of industry certified parts like Dolby certified sound cards and the like. If a user who doesn't know about this pops in such a protected DVD, then they won't be able to play said movie.
I don't know what the sales figures are on these computers but for now they probably don't amount to much compared to DVD players. In a few years though, I'm sure it will be a lot more esp as hardware prices fall and the "need" to go HD picks-up (Blu-Ray and HD-DVD drives aint cheap and a Media Center PC isn't much more depending on quality of parts inside).
Statistics I've found is more difficult to grasp. As I've come to understand the key terms and concepts and worked out some problems on paper sure, its become easier. I've picked up Statistics Demystified (Highly recommended) and its helped. I need to brush up before my next Stats class though (bear in mind doing more 'applied' and 'actual' research with it more in the Liberal Arts type and not in an actual Stats dept level).... any suggestions (books, exercises, websites)?
IMHO, there are a number of 'open' textbooks on the web now by (mostly) US college/university professors. These are often better than the store-bought ones. Anyone wanting to brush up on some math or learn it, highly recommended.
I'd have to agree. I was considering putting up a well-written blog with some commentary and analysis on it. After looking at a lot of the blogs, I don't know if I would have an audience.
A "great writing" score on an SAT would probably result in a scholarship to a prestigious university (Yale, Harvard, etc.). This would likely mean someone would have the ability to write like Dickens or Poe or another "great" ficton writer or poet. I don't believe the time limit itself would be responsible for eliminating someone with this amount of skill. Writing at that level is a natural ability.
I think to some extent, the low SAT scores though are a combination of a few things: unchallenging English essays in high schools and a product of the computer age. Too much time is spent writing about Shakespeare and not enough about writing about something the student is passionate about. My high school English teacher told me I would fail at university. I'm a straight "A" student into my 4th year of university. University taught me to write and to express myself - not high school!
You mentionned having a large open space. How about buying employees laptops, longing chairs and heat lamps, sand and some sound machines to simulate the sound of water. Everyone dreams of working at the beach. So, why not make it happen?
The beach area can be where management works (sits) all day long... and if any body ever questions their workload, don't bother them since they're working on their tans! You can wear bearfoot (though some you might want to encourage to wear shoes to hide their feet from others). This idea, I hope you will find, will be extra motivation for employees to work harder to make it to management. I think it will be a productivity boost. And who wouldn't want to have company meetings on a beach?
I will forward my resume immediately if this idea is implemented. I've always wanted to work in management, and based on the ability to tan all day long, I believe I will be a great asset to the company.
Uh, isn't the point supposed to be that you can change the camera angle so that you can't see her teeth, pimple, needle mark, ruise and wrinkle esp since it will be in HD?;) Suggestion: Maybe you should spend more than $5 on your porn so they can pay for a better "actress"!
I've been thinking of this problem as well as I waste too much paper. I seem a bit unmotivated to read all the academic journals but if they're read to me, I absorb more.
One solution I've been looking/waiting for is to have a text-to-speech translation of the document to play on my iPod. I don't know if there's any good solutions right now particulalry when it involves PDF documents. I'm primarily a Mac user but have an older PC lying around. I heard the text to speech demo in the Jobs WWDC keynote and it sounds great. I'm hoping I can use that for some documents. Its my last year though so I won't be able to use it for university;)
The F-14 was definately a nice plane. I'm Canadian and I used to live near one of the air-force bases (this was 10 to 15 years ago) . There would regulalry be F-14s and F-18s flying overhead (mostly American & Canadian pilots training together). Seeing them upclose at the air show was really cool.
Though I must say the A-10s are probably the most impressionable close up as well as the B2. I miss the sound of the fighter jets taking off... its kind of addicting.;)
According to this timeframe.... http://www.robotech.com/infopedia/timeline/vieweve nts.php?primaryseries=MAC, aliens are bound to attack our planet! The VF-1 mechs are clearly based on the F-14 design. If production stops of the F-14s, then we won't be able to rapdily build the VF-1. So, we are screwed!
I agree with parent. What about those who already have allergies and rice is one of the few "safe" foods? I am allegic (intolerant) to gluten. For carbs in my diet, I have to basically rely upon rice, corn and potatos.
I oppose that Bayer specifically does this to rice, if for no other reason, than if it becomes popular it will become significantly more expensive than rice is currently on the market. I'm concerned as well because some may see eating the GM food as "safe" if eaten as a "treat" on an occasional basis. Those of us who rely on rice, corn and potatos are screwed and may have to use a GM food.
Fine, there are plenty of rice crops. What if, say rice growers (substitue with potato or corn) in North America decide they don't want to grow the GM stuff and don't want to pay extra $$$ for the seeds. I seem to recall a series of lawsuits (several of which were posted on/.) where wind and insects have carried the seeds to other crops and farmers were sued because they didn't pay out. Could this not help to form a dominant variety in NA? I don't suppose that bribes to politicians from drug companies might have a role in the future of imposing levies on non-GM food crops.
Some have commented on discriminating against the poor. I find this is also a way to discriminiate against students who have recently graduated from post-secondary education. I know a lot of students who have $50,000 + debts. Many of them are great workers, have good personalities, no criminial history and are looking for experience in their fields. This isn't to say they don't pay their student loans. They do. But I'm sure this doesn't help them out.
Some employment agencies were quoted in the article. I've dealt with a few of them over the years, and I don't believe its so much the employers using this tactic as much as it is the agencies. And if one is *only* employed by an agency (temp, contract work) how the hell can you really build up a good credit with no stable income?
I'm wondering in a way if the media companies don't really want this anyways. Consider: 1) There's a huge amount of convergence in the industry 2) Cable/Satellite companies are the largest 'consumers' of movies via PPV selling.
I worked in sales for a cable company. PPV makes a huge part of the revenue. Now that some are releasing video-on-demand, consider this: if they are broadcast in HDTV with some form of copy protection and you now don't buy the movie but 'download it'... if you want to watch the same movie over, you end up having to pay for it again. Lets say the PPV is $5. Say 1/2 goes to producer, 1/2 to cable. A DVD sells for what $15 in stores. Say (generously) $7 goes to retailer, $2.5 to wholesaler, $2.5 to producer. How are the profit margins not better for the studios. Time Warner is a producer and a cable company. Confilict of intererst? Yep.
The profits, I'm speculating on, but I'll bet there's probably more profit in PPV video on demand type service to Hollywood then they'll ever be on buying DVDs. And its all about control anyways.
So in other words, if you're a sexual predator of young children, avoid using MSN chat for your illigitamate purposes.
I would hate to be falsely accused and have to go through an investigation. Hopefully if this gets implemented they'll take some precatutionary measures to prevent this.
Simple. Chop of the fingers and attach new ones. Why do you think there is this research on atrifical limbs and skin regrowth? To make you a good consumer! It also increases security, as each of the 10 fingers can have a different password since new fingerprints can be put on each.
So, don't ever ask to have your password reset. You have been warned!!!!
Why is it still so damn hard to get every popular album that was ever released - either in the music store or on iTunes? There's quite a few albums I'd pay money to get, even in digital format. Apple doesn't seem to be able to get the songs (I'd probably blame the labels for it) and its impossible to find these albums in stores or on-line.
I'd like it if I could purchase the albums with the videos, both in high-quality, at the same time for slighltly more than a regular album with no copy protection. Or, am I dreaming? Videos definately give me a nostalgic feeling in watching them again.
If its just to open the packaging, I think they should provide the knife at those prices!
I can see that is probably for anti-theft measures. But it excessive for a mouse. Most last less than a year. Think of all the wasted packaging every year when someone buys a mouse.
Maybe rethinking retail displays is in hand. Put everything behind-the-counter. At least this way they can reduce packaging.

If this new compression is added to the existing compression, I'm sure it'll beat everything.
I'm surprised at many of these reporters. I'm a liberal arts major. The first thing they teach in "Media Theory 1000" is that in advertising, journalism, etc etc you have to present your topic to your audience. The audience for this presentation *are* developers. Not consumers. I'm a consumer of Apple products. I'd like a new iPod. I want a new model before back-to-shool. But its not going to happen. The jouralists who right this garbage have to put more thought into their writing.
And it effects more then their audience. They have to remember when they write stuff like this, it also effects the stock prices. They have a responsbility to report this information better.
Thank you. I am president of the STDCCA (Small-Town Data Center Coalition of America), I am pleased to hear that others are becoming aware of this problem!!!
My small data center (its ten 486-class computers) not too far away from Google will loose a significant amount of business. Business has alredy been slow to begin with.

Thanks for clarifying. I knew that some of the role of not auditing the results was simply the costs related to the matter.
