Thats why for any on-line purchases (or places where the card is going to leave my sight) I use a card with a 1K limit, and I check the callances on-line at least 2x a week (it takes like 5 min to log in and check it). If someone want to mess with that card go for it. As for my garbage i've got a file of every reciept going back 3 years, at the end of that it gets shredded on it's way out (takes like 20 min to shred a whole year). Problem solved. All it really takes to protect your self is to keep an eye out. I had that CC stolen one (on-line). I noticed the charges right away, called the bank, they re-issued the card and removed the 2 bad charges. End of problem. As for my SSN, hell more sites use it for logings then i care to think about (most financial sites ask for it) and wone of my friend's banks uses it as her account number, so it's on every check she writes (the whole 9 digits!). Your info is out there. Just check it yourself to make sure that nothing looks fishy. Hell if you don't order a Credit Report once a year and review it, your asking for trouble.

The reason taht some OSes like the 1:1 relationship the artile talks about is that in some OSes the data in RAM gets written to the swap space durring "free" cycles. This means that if room is needed in RAM that page can be jettosoned without having to do a write back then. So if your OS does this, and your not currently using RAM much you *should* have an exact copy of most of the pages on the HDD. If you suddenly start doing a MASSIVE amount of calculations on something that is currently not in ram at all, you don't have to swap all those current pages out (they have alreadys been copied there) just dump them and load the new stuff. The less writing you have to do before you load the faster you can get the load done.

  17. Re:Longer ride != faster lines on Tallest Roller Coaster in the World · · Score: 1

A BIG part of the time is how long it takes to get UP the hill....the newer coasters only sound short because many of them you go up the hill fast! If you compared the time from the top of the lift hill to the end of the ride on the older coasters it's less then 1/3 of the "ride time" in most cases. So while it may seem sort, it will not seem any less of a ride.....you just lose the anticipation factor of that first big hill, waiting to go over.

If your data is worth that much, then ASK to see credentials. If you don't care then don't. Just because the government doesn't regulate the industry doesn't mean that you can't selectively choose who you use. Just because they regulate the "auto-repair" industry doesn't mean I can ask my neighbor who knows all about cars to do some work on it for me, and then pay him for it. In fact that's not even illegal. You will probably pay more to use a place that has credentials and will guarantee their work, like if I decide to take may car to Midas instead of my neighbor's driveway. The gov. doesn't need to be involved. Hell if they get involved then the price of fixing someone's Internet browsing/e-mail reading computer could become very expensive. Sometimes having the unqualified kid next door come over look at it is the best thing, if you don't care much about the system or the data.

It would be especially nice if they relized that tech-savy people are the ones who want this and designed it around current computer hardware and let people install extra/replacment drives easily, let them add DVD drives to play DVDs, let them add DVD burners to save favorites, places to plug in RAID cards, network cards, and the likes.
