I submitted this review on July 6th of this year. It was immediately accepted...I guess they were waiting for the accompanying book reviews to come around too.
Sorry for the time delay, honestly, I read the book a long time ago...and then wrote a review. I still recommend it to just about anyone though!

I agree. There does seem to be a depressing amount of uninformed or misinformed people running around. I recently talked to one of the new computer admins in my shop. Hes a really young guy, and obviously just learning how to administer his own trip to the urinal...but he was asking other questions about networking and VPN tunneling. He brought up how he's got something to do with SCO back home...
We chuckled and told him to stay as far away from SCO as humanly possible. He is 'in the industry' and yet he did not know a thing about it. innocense is bliss.
The problem with china is that it is run with probably a corruption ratio of 6%...but those 6% get everything they want. So therefore we say china is evil.
America runs a political structure where 95% of the people are corrupt, selfish, lying bastards...but those 95% only get their way about.05% of the time.
I think the given percentage of evil is pretty comparable. Question is who ends up with less evil in public policy...and who actually gets more done with their evil?
Obviously China has some evil people blocking legitimate business email that helps millions with small penises every day. However, here in america we kind of like that idea.
Obviously, America has some evil people that can't even turn on their computer without being confused by all they buttons in front of them. Over in china, they like that and count on the people hitting the right button about.05% of the time.
1 week for a moderately crazy slashdotter to learn tile making...
1 week to pick a location...
1 day to case the location and pick a perfect time...
roughly 4 days for a weekend to roll around with less traffic and a day off...
Hence I predict the exponential growth of Street Tiles between 16 and 19 days from today. These tiles will be placed on all continents except Antarctica...as the singe road does not have traffic or any discernable heat.
Mystery of tiles are solved - they are created by computer geeks from the year 2003 that traveled back in time to place the earlier tiles.
That I am not aware of...but I just can't help thinking this: why not take that damn Athlon/Intel Chip and simply make it larger. Give it a double layer of pins for pinout and such...somehow get it to connect to the motherboard...but instead of the entire etching of the chip being less than the size of my pinkie fingernail...how about making the damn thing the size of a postage stamp...or better yet 2 or 3 inches on each side...
Even better, make the whole thing flexible like a piece of plastic, and fold it on itself, it could be 2 feet long, and just accordion into a little box - which a fan blows thru to dissipate heat.
Whats wrong with an underground cavern filled for miles of computer? If that computer has vast sections of itself running at 2.4+ Gigahertz, and Disk arrays the size of chevy's....wow.
Then again, there probably is something like that buried in china somewhere...I've always wondered what they do with all those parts they recycle...thats what its for people! Vast, Vast computing...with our scraps!
You know the major market for these contraptions are going to be the 'mildly overweight' that can't seem to do anything without whinning and complaining. You know the ones, they are the people that sandwich you in the grocery store isle and don't even notice that their kids are screaming bloody murder and throw a candybar in their mouth to satiate themselves(I have a theory that they are crunching and therefore cannot hear their little neglected brats).
Honestly, you know michael jackson is going to buy a fleet of them and lure kids to his playland to ride them.
The second largest consumer for this product is going to be the United States government - as it purchases them thru medicare and medicade with the vast billions earned on the taxpayers back.
makes me irritated just thinking about it. course, it also has its advantages. Perhaps I should become 'overbese', sprout 5 gangly children that bear no resemblance to the woman I am married to, and live off the government so that I can get one of those nifty little gadgets...so that I don't have to walk all the way to my new favorite gas station to purchase my new favorite hobby snack - cheap brand cigarettes.
For what it's worth...

But I did think that the articles were pretty well written. They were not polarized and edgy(as I would have written it...something along the lines of 'those lying cheating @#$% call my @#$# code @#$@theirs??'.
I also, just for kicks, tried to telnet into the mail.sco.com server. No luck. They don't accept telnet links. That would have been fun ehh?
At first I didn't think they were up, still DDoS...but I was able to ping them. Ping Ping Ping. I only did it once, but I'll bet you guys could ping them too...just to make sure they were still up of course. Purely curiosity.
I think you are right. This jacka$$ was filling my inboxes too apparently. I used to recieve around 30-40 spams in my main hotmail spam repository....another 20 or more getting automatically blocked... Now I have less than a third of that. Praise God.
Honestly, I know my ins and outs with microshaft, can even realize some of the tools for admin in linux are FAR superior and EASIER to use...and free...but that doesn't mean that I know about ALL the Linux tools either.
I think this is a valuable tool for those of us out there that don't exactly have a 'full toolbox' like the rest of you.:)
WARNING: BAD ANALOGY TO FOLLOW:
Real carpenters and working men may have several hammers that they use on different things, but the starting 18 year old kid...yeah, he just buys the middle range hammer at the hardware store and beats the s#@t out of everything with it.
I would definitely consider myself a newb to linux. been playing with it for a few months on and off. Can install them all and get them all working fully now. I can set up my webserver and link up my little homebrew website...I can serve email to myself.
I'll be honest. I am much more confident with the RPM package manager than the CPAN command you all are saying is so wonderful. Perhaps if I read an instruction book or something...but I don't generally program, so I don't have those books laying around.
I think its a good idea for newbs that can play around with the scripts and hopefully find something that works. Right now I'm working on learning PHP...but am obviously not competent on it yet.
It may be redundant for most of you well learned folks...but then so is that damn gui. I bet you all wish the gui didn't load either...since it is so redundant.:)
at the same competative rate quoted by my competitor above.
Also, do I have any volunteers to help me chop off and sell body parts to pay for the SCO license? I think I'll send them...yup...here it is right here...my favorite SCO body part....
My Middle Finger.
Take that SCO.
Then pay me for the right to kiss my butt cheeks...since I know you simply cannot live without it.
you have finally given me a decent reason. Blessings on you for actually USING your palmtop. Unforunately 98% of the market is for slobbering idiots...most of them leading companies or trying to feel like it.
its a palmtop/pda. Its not like you have this huge monolithic computer sitting on your desk that you do ALL your work on...and it simply must communicate with the computer at work.
The only real crossplatform need I see is for developers themselves...so that they can easily put mozilla or something on a machine. Whether or not that little doodad needed mozilla doesn't matter...whether or not you even have a keyboard that you can type on(without using a pencil erasor) to type in urls doesn't matter...because at least it migrated well to the new platform right?
gee whiz...
I can tell how badly I am going to get burned by this...even the comments replying to my nasty post are annonymous.:)
I know I am going to get a troll or an offtopic...but I just don't understand the point of the opie project at all. Perhaps because I am not cool enough to use a palmtop/PDA...I use paper notes or cards in my wallet for the things I really, really...really need. Good thing I don't have a lot of them.
Question I can't get out of my head is this. All of this equipment already ships with an OS that works and that was custom designed for that piece of hardware...so why rebuild it with linux?
I like linux, I run linux...and it helps me avoid the evil empire that would like to tax me. But palm/etc does not charge me extra for the use of their palm os. I can buy niftly little game packs and everything to fit in a palm that holds all the games of my youth on it...
I just don't understand the need. Except maybe to force layoffs in big companies like palm...when they switch over to this newly made free OS. Thats what the/. community needs...more out of work software engineers.
I just emailed to find out how I can donate $20 US. I am a bad bad person, and have never paid for any Red Hat products...except a book once that wasn't even published by them (but about red hat 9).
when I giggled at her. Turns out she had spent the last week trying to learn how to play half life...so that she could maybe go online and play counterstrike with me.
She got all excited when I came home early from work one day and she was sitting in front of my computer...she tried to hide it. I told her to go ahead and sit and play and I would marvel at her wonderfulness. I was really excited that she would learn to play with me.
I couldn't help myself. I laughed at her when I realized that she was trying to play the game with teh arrow keys instead of wasd. She was so upset and frustrated that she's never played with me again. That was over a year and a half ago.
Flamebait? True, healthy dose of sarcasm...I expected a moderation point of 'offtopic'. Let me guess, one of the guys from europe modded me down? Ok, well then you can't sell burgers, or any other american product over there. Time to throw away your britney spears collection.
Thats one way to make up for innadequate production. What snobs. Honestly, do you think that a handfull of small shops employing 30-10,000 workers can really supply the entire world with their product? Especially when the average european takes 60 days(unsure of that number) off from work each year?
Honestly. They take triple the number of days off that the americans do, double the time off the canadians do...are less than 1/100th of the size...and they think they have the right to copyright the name of where they are from so that they can sell their product?
that claim to know about "plenty of Linux and Solaris boxes get hacked because of incompetent or uncaring IT people".
If they are really so knowledgeable, why don't they use their names? And why must anybody that disagrees with thier opinion be a zealot?
Linux is inherently more secure. Thats a fact.
Windows is inherently easier to use. Thats a fact. (think about it...windows is generated for the absolute lowest common denominator. They are designed for idiots. Microsoft wants an idiot to be able to use it. That way they can sell a lot.)
Windows and various unices currently have different strengths. That is a fact.
Why must the immature and uneducated post kneejerk reactions to the simple discussion of Linux? They must feel threatened...because they know that they do not understand anything but windows. They feel inferior, and do not want to show their weaknesses. We all try to hide our weaknesses, often even from ourselves.
Poor tortured souls. Please, show compassion to the masses.
I use windows. I am very productive on it. I also admin red hat servers in my own hobby time at home. Am I bad now? I use both. I am true evil.
Very interesting point. I believe it to be truthful.
I wonder when these big companies will quit paying their (bad) CEOs salaries that are 150-450 times that of their average worker. Honestly, all these companies that have merged recently have had market share go down and generally have been regarded as big and useless. They are not visionary or creative. Instead these large megacorporations are ending up as marketing engines. They produce a hundred products...and market them so heavily we are all sick of it.
Gone are the days of wishing for that perfect solution...because it doesn't exist. Now there are good solutions...and they are turned out by the millions, and have the market bursting at the seams with them.
And yes, our freedom of choice is not taken away by government or the corporations...but by corporations with a government blessing/mandate.
On the side...wtf is the deal with these terrible nasty trolls? I know IP spoofing is not beyond those involved...but it would be good to start aggressivly blocking those IPs.
the easy access of removable drives. Simply pull it out of your computer, and walk down the hall. Or Simply pull it out, and walk home with it. Very easy way to transport all those important files(work and pRon) home with you. If you don't have a OC3 line at your house, it definitely is better to carry the drive with you than download it.
Honestly, there is never a substitute for remote archives and such in case of a fire or something.
You know, the old school NES RPG game. I started out reading it slowly to make sure I got the whole thing and any possible clues as to what my quest was supposed to be. I guess I learned some things from it...

Seriously though, I guess you can easily learn problem solving, the try and try and try again principle, patience, extended mental focus/concentration...which may be really good for ADHD children...I've never seen any stats but it seems resonable to me. You can also learn, in a well made game, that your previous actions will indeed have consequences - something that many parents in this culture do not teach their children.
Very reasonable man I would presume...and also some very reasonable ideas.
I wish I got paid to sit and make thoughts like this.
