Remember that StarOffice is supposed to be the "Stable" branch that is purchased in quantity for large corperations. Sun really doesn't want large coperations using the free version.

OpenIPO and Lindows

He had one of his infamous Micheals Minutes a while bakc that discused the ipo porcess he went threw with mp3.com. He was disgusted int he way that the shares were sold to cronies and friends of the finatial institutions that conducted the IPO. It reduced the amount of money the company raised, while make millions for others who did absolutely nothing. So, I'm not suprised he wen OpenIPO on this one. Still, I wouldn't be suprised if this was the begining of the end for Lindows. If you read the public disclosure that accompanied tha annoucement, they mention that they are essentially out of cash, and losing it hand over fist.
I was talking about OSnews story last week, it seems they also picked up this article. Anyways their discussion was more mature than the average slashdot one so head on over and read theirs here.
1 is a cool number. who doesn't want to be #1? I admit it is childish, but you know if we all acted like adults.... well, I don't know what would happen, but I would predict it would be something not as cool as whatever it is like when we don't all act like adults. Thats for sure. Speaking of which why does everyone call it the first post? I thought this was a place for computer nerds! it should be zeroith post!
To be honest, I quickly skimed the writeup because I was in a rush to see if I could manage to get a fp. At least I didn't troll. I was actually suprised I wasn't modded down. In any case its not the best review. I also went down to B&N and reviewed the book myself. Its not good. The Cue cat is "hacked" to remove the unique identifier. The Atartis are "Hacked" to modify their controllers ( 2600 is rotated 90 for lefties, they modify a nintendo (NES) controller to work with it, make a 5200 paddle wheel, and replace a red led with a blue one. Other chapters are equally disapointing. The one on Tivo replacements is a simple myth tv howto and a section on doing the same on windows. The Terrabyte drive was by far the coolest hack, but I wouldnt' consider it very cool simply because of the high cost of the supplies. For some unknown reason the last chapters are on Operating system archetecture ( where they reveal that drivers are used to control hardware!) and an intro to programming (variables are used to store data in memory!). Craptacular. On the front their is a quote from mitnik that makes absolutely no sense he's quoted to the effect "If I had this book ten years ago, the FBI never would have caught me". WTF? Was he captured using the UID of the Cue Cat? Or maybe it was because he couldn't use the right handed 2600 controler! So unless you want to build a terrabyte firewire raid drive, I wouldn't reccomend it.
Wrong hands? Seriously? I guess I don't wear a tin foil hat. Its not that I don't value my privacy, but there really isn't anything that embarising or valuable. Don't get me wrong I value my data as well, hence the weekly backups, but honestly 20 gigs is so little space these days. Especially, for a triple boot system. Well if you can do it, more power to you. I'm just suggusting that msot people (especially slashdotters) use more than 20 gigs. Heck, my parents of all people put their 40 gig harddrive to full use! Powerpoint, scanned photo albumns, specialized apps, 19 years of documents, homework assignments, and emails it all adds up.
Seriously, 20GB is too big? What about those games that routinely take 2-3 gigs? What about those of us that use labtops as our primary computer? Silly Rabbit, Labtops are for adults!
Does information want to be anything? The more information you have about a system (thermodynamically speaking of course), the less entropy there is. However, entropy is always increasing. The very act of collecting information distroys information and increases entropy by a greater amount that it is decreased. Maybe the information itself doesn't want to be anything, but the Universe wants information to dissapear ( just look at the 100 year cd myth story for more proof).
It makes their life alot easier, if everyone using any other operating systems would just register them, so they can send them an invoice and/or lawsuit.
It could be safely done, but not cheaply. You'd have to shape the field so it wouldn't let the mouse out of the field. It would also probely draw more power than your computer.
Now Tammy wouldn't have given out her password for a chocolate bar. I say, give everyone an embarising password and they won't tell anybody. Not nessarily sexual, but insulting like "IhaveBO" or "FatAssAmI" something like that.
Companies are the wrong place to put trust. They are a nessisary evil that is to be watched carefully to ensure that they do not abuse their power. They are not God, their whitepapers are not to be followed religeously. As always do whats in the best interest of your particular company. Never fall in love with a company or technology, or you will be burned.
Good question. The answer is that I am doing it for myself, but it can be useful to others. Before the age of the public internet I actually rewrote a couple utlitlities which are now free. I would have like to have just used one that soemone else had written or taken what they had done and change it to fit my purposes. Thats usually what I do with free software, so to be fair I release back what I've done with it. Usually people probley ignore my contributions, but some of it can be useful. The point is that we as a soceity advance faster if knowledge is free.
You'd better belive I'm designing it for ME. Its not fun to design programs for other people. Thats a job. I wouldn't do that for free. If you would like to PAY me to make it work for you, I would be happy to. Of course it is open source, so if you don't like it you can change it yourself.
I wrote a program that solves crossword puzzels because I was sick of losing to my younger brother. It helped but Saterdays have the obscure answers that weren't in my dictionary. Stupid New York.
Its not even close
to fulfill the WORA promise Java has.
If only that Sun could manage to keep that promise...
What you say is mostly correct. Many fortune 500 companies have invested heavily in Java to the point of replacing COBOL with Java. After making that transistion, I don't think they'll even consider moving to anything else regardless of the marketing hype. As long as their is a single company supporting Java, it will exist. Now, C# with its tighert control of its enviorment has the potential to dominate areas that Java has not been able to penetrate.. such as the desktop/ client. Java's not the fastest, easiest, or best to develop interfaces with.

They do a very good job of debunking it. Its Crap. Don't believe evrything you read.

I might just have to pick it up and brush up on my electronics skills. I'm sure it would come in handy someday.
There is the distro just for you! Take a look at Jesux

There is in my opinion nothing better than an old joke. Tell it 5000 times and I'll laugh at every one. If only the trolls were as funny.

Yes, OBVIOUSLY, a nerdish car isn't going to be a chick magnet. Thats what makes it FUNNY. Hello, McFly! Anyone home?
If you did then you would understand why they are a non factor. (HINT: if you can't read hebrew, you probley won't find much use from their portal.)
Meanwhile, AOL's Netscape subsidiary, which last year was hit with a massive layoff, also is seeking to turn around its business
"Turn around its business"?! I wasn't aware that it had any! Someone please tell me what their current stratagy is.
Netscape Buisness plan

most people are at work....
Plus slashdot looks sorta funny in firefox.
As you said, thats why I needed the program (bah).
