Well they did distribute linux. This patent is in regards to hardware something IBM doesn't seem to care much about, they've been around since before MS and they'll be around after them. It's possible they did it so no one else could. Let's look at the bright side, this means IBM is going to start paying to develop open source code, what is their OS of choice Linux. Is it free yes, therefore likely result = Better Linux Still free and open source. Another possible result is Open Source Creators finally getting paid for their work. It's about time.

The thing about this is that I was taken in by the same ruse which affected OCZ, testing sample bull***t.

It's kind of interesting because this reminds me of the nVidia 3DMark2k3 crap. I think it is interesting that both companies are producing luxury goods, no one is going to die because of fudged silver content or low vid card performance. In fact both only affect gaming, an area where people seem to think commitments are fluid(BenchMark Fuzzies, Over the top Marketing Crap, unrealistic Release Dates, hell we have friggin VaporWare).

We don't laugh at you we are happy that you pay the silly copywrite tax so we get the game. In this case however I respected the quality of R3:RS enough to buy it. First off the game will not EVEN WORK without a no-cd crack, even with a supposed no-cd crack I still need the CD and now this. The game is quite buggy and I think a patch would be a good idea, removing some of the weapon imbalances/map imbalances etc. I also have a modded X-Box and it is a joy to play with, for the price of a mid level graphics card and some ram ($300 U.S.) I got the console, 2 controllers, the best mod chip available, and a 120 gig HD to put in there. I now have about 70 titles on the thing, about 3000+ roms and I stream movies and audio from my computer all the time. I love PC gaming but this CD stuff has to stop, they should know by now they can't win. There was a period a couple years ago when cracks were scarce looks like we are headed into such dark times again. But the crackers will be back, it's just a matter of time till someone get's pissed with game reviewers again and brings back the real demo, free software. So go find a site that reviews pirated versions of games, and bring the fun back to the PC.

  19. User thinking. on Real Security? · · Score: 1

The idea's for security in terms of passwords are laughable. If you make someone use an alphanumeric password generated randomly most will need to write it down somewhere. If you give them an account with low priveledges and one with higher priveledges they will log on with the higher one just because it annoyes them not having some functionality. If you make the user type in a password when trying to use specific features or documents the user will most likely create all future documents or features with a lower level of security. And you can't have someone increasing security on each little document or design decision. Leave the users with a simple password they can remember. Don't have them change it too often as this will lead to them being nervous about it. Make sure that users know what to do if they lose their password. If you don't have this functionality in place they will use redundancy to protect their password (notepad document on the desktop, peice of scrap paper on their desk etc.) that is a security risk. In the worst case, they might not change their password or contact tech support if they detect suspicious activity or get locked out. Make sure that password loss isn't something they should be embarrased or unduly inconveinienced by.

I live in Toronto and I don't feel crowded. Our isp options are painfully limited. Viable options are DSL ($39.95 15k up/150k down) and Cable ($50 without TV cable $30 with 40/300). There are some smaller isps offering DSL (approx $65-90 90/500) but their range is severely limiting and your speed is cut with distance. If toronto with 8mil people in about 25sqk. isn't going to see fibre (even in a washed out "wifi last mile" variation) until 2008 how are the rest of Canada's provinces supposed to recieve decent internet connectivity? It can in fact be modified to run Linux, for slashdotters who are up in arms against corperate developed software, it even supports simple networking and Samba.
