Time, Code... money, marketing, feature requests, testing, bug reports, bandwidth, peer support, corperate support, idea farming.
Not to belittle you code guys, but thinking just cuz there's no support behind you doesn't make it so.
I know it's slashdot and it's all about the coders, but quite frankly every day I put up with coders running in circles because they don't know how to make a decent product. Guess why? Because you don't listen to the rest of the team...
Agreed, and scientists share research in order to get contradiction if their theories are false.
Corperate research for a long time has been kept quiet, and has suffered for it. (Personal example, we wouldn't be getting 200 mhz over and over if the government was in charge.)
Scientists still do it for prestige and personal satisfaction, which I think few jobs these days really offer.
offtopic: I read the physchologists oath and as well as renouncing wealth, fame, power it also renounced personal pride, it really messed me up reading it.
There is software to recover from any error. I forget what it's called. It'll also do any real cd's you have. It's really good, fixed up some old anime I had in rm on a bunch of old disks.
People will spent hundreds of dollars for a few more FPS and game designers optimize like HELL!
If Valve and more importantly id's respective games run like crap on linux then guess what. It's a crappy OS for gaming, that's it.
The damn thing needs a rewrite.
I know win98 runs games faster than XP but I can accept winXP performance, I can't accept Linux performance, especially when I have an ATI card.
When the developers port their games to linux they see whatever drivers are available and optimize for them, they don't care about existing packages they just dump everything you need on there.
Windows was supposed to release a stripped down version designed for gaming, people were excited it turned into longhorn the blowtomatic.
Linux is still trying to balance stability features and security. Performance isn't even a consideration (but happens occasionally more from lack of bloat then actual optimization).
Really it's not their fault. They built an OS that can do tonnes of things and do them easily.
Virus writters are simply trying to destroy, it's totally antisocial behavior and should be punished to the full extend possible under the law. A simple system to track virii backwards and fixing should lead to the writter.
Spyware and Adware should be illegal, it's totally absurd how much damage it causes while companies get rich from slowly crapping up people's computers.
Linux is all about opening up information and allowing users to change things, but Microsoft wants to make it easy to change everything as well.
Assuming there will be people actively trying to destroy what you make is self defeating, not every party has someone counting beers and food.
Windows works out of the box, with everything working. Monitor, Graphics card, internet everything!
Yea it's harder for linux, but it doesn't mean that the goal shouldn't be the same.
In terms of ease of use a few distro's I've installed have been far and away better, Mandrake, Redhat, Suse. (Debian falls the farthest short, though it sounds like Gentoo also sucks.)
I haven't tried the auto update from internet but I haven't heard good things.
Quantum computing is supposed to remove the concept of transistors and use the spin of various subatomic particles to reflect numbers and number theory.

Actually the motivation for linux stems in a large part from knowing that people appreciate your work.
Things like website hits, linux downloads, and seeing MS marketshare drop are pretty key for many of these creators.
And I feel for true artists, though the RIAA would say I'm wrong.
"The characteristics of information?be it software, text or even biotech research?make it an economically obvious thing to share."
Step carefull around the ravenous wolves.
You think english is beautiful? You're mad! Mad I tell you!
Having instructed people in English let me tell you, we have grammar problems up the wazzoo!
Be? Is? Stick a fork in this one it's done.
That's the trick, to keep releasing better and better versions as close together as possible.
But never to let the consumer know if they wait a month they'll get something 10x better.
When will we get a second season!
:)
On bittorrent of course
Yes, yes we are.

Just 2c.

Or am I way off.
They are making a fuss because of what the U.S. is doing to them over I.P.
IT would be absurd to release this stuff for free if you have to pay for it from other people.
I suggest people in other countried get on with our "piracy"... their silly conflict doesn't concern us.
ATI is currently selling very few cards. Everyone knows the best value is in the 6600GT and 6800GT.
The x700 series, is just garbage.
The 9600 XT has the same performance for the same price, the 9800 pro is also the same price.
ATI has so little fab space they simply don't reflect market pressures.
When I was in south East asia I hooked tonnes of people up with E-Bay.
They made tonnes of money overnight. It was very rewarding.
That's a pretty big security hole to leave in the game. I mean it would be the perfect no cd crack!
Written BY valve!
The CD Key system is just as good at preventing theft.
This whole thing is terrible.
Issues that aren't addressed before patch solutions are often never addressed, sloppy big programs because of large HD's and memory.
Graphics textures without compression because of massive graphics card memory.
Programs with security holes because of firewalls and internal business security.
This version of Ad-Aware may be the last one if this becomes common place.
Bittorrent makes the small link useless.
:(
But the seeders need to put in the same bandwidth how terrible
Bittorrent really needs to receive total adoption.
Unfortunatly the creation of viruses is almost the most anti-social thing imagineable.
These people deserve the greatest punishment our society can inflict because their crime has no purpose beyond destruction.
Not to underestimate selfishness, but wanton hatred and destructiveness are terrifying vices in adults.
Wasn't BBC going to release everything into the public domain?
I have an xbox installation takes up space on both. Course windows games get bloat.
