  1. Re:Cookie and Cream on Two Players, One Console, Cooperative Play? · · Score: 3, Interesting

Absolutely. My wife and I enjoyed playing it. Some of the puzzles were a little beyond her ability though, so we frequently swapped controllers so that I could do a frustrating part for her.

SSX/SSX Tricky are also favorites around our house. My wife races down the mountain (and frequently beats me) while I try to do crazy tricks. Not really co-op though.

She also enjoys "playing" graphical adventures with me - ie, helping to solve the puzzles, if not actually controlling the character on screen. "Escape From Monkey Island" is one that we really enjoyed together.

If you want to go back in time, try out "Chew Man Fu" for the TG16, which is the video game that got my Mom hooked on playing video games (she's 52 now, and addicted to Hot Shots Golf 3) Good co-op mode there, but a little hard to track down ;)

Seriously, go to the MSN search sidebar under IE - they have a "search preview" window which shows thumbnails of what the search results look like.

When a coworker showed me that, I was somewhat surprised. It's a neat feature, but I'll stick with Google.

I've gotta say that Carmageddon is the one game that, while fun to play, seriously affected my driving for hours afterwards.

It was very tough to not swerve onto the sidewalk on my way home after a day-long Carmageddon session at a friend's place. Seriously.

But I didn't do it, which is why I'm not currently in prison or the loony bin.

Seeing as they make money every year (ie wind up adding money to the government coffers) I don't know what else to say.

The infrastrucure was built by taxpayer money initially, but as I said before, I'll stack our telcos service levels with any private company in the world. And after all, isn't that what it's all about?

There are cases when having a government run business can be a good thing - of course that's not always the case, but where SaskTel is concerned, I'm glad they stayed competition free for as long as they did. They can still afford to innovate, unlike a lot of other phone companies.

  6. Re:Uh... on Do We Still Need Telcos (and ISPs)? · · Score: 2, Informative

I disagree. The local phone company here is owned by the province, and they provide great service at a reasonable price. Taxes don't pay for everything, and there is now competition for long distance carriers here, but most people are sticking with the government carrier because the other services aren't any cheaper or better. DSL is available in all kinds of out of the way places too. I'll stack SaskTel up with any of your private companys any time.

Many is the time that I've seen a pedestrian after a long session of Carmageddon, and thought - I could just swerve a little bit, and extend my time. Damned pedestrians, taking up my sidewalks.

In fact, I'd like to run one over right now... Whoa - where did that come from?

  9. TG16 and HUSoft - underappreciated gems on Now You Can Bonk On Your Gamecube · · Score: 1

I got a TG16 back when I was around 12, and I still occasionally play it. My opinion is that the main source of it's troubles was the single controller port. Yes, you could get a tap, and then play up to 5 player games (which was awesome - at the time, systems were limited to 2 player mostly)

Even though many console games are one player only, you need to have two ports to sell a system.

Bomberman on the TG16 has never been surpassed (in my opinion) by another bomberman game. I tried Bomberman64, and was sick for a week, it was such a bad bastardization of a great multiplayer game.

MotoRoader is a fun, addictive little racing game that we (my brothers and I) dust off every now and then to challenge each other.

Hell, "Chew Man Fu" was the first video game that I ever got my Mom to play, and she recently bought four new controllers (yes new - they're still available for some reason) so that she could keep playing it.

Bonk's Adventure, Bonk's Revenge, and Bonk's Big Adventure (Bonk 3) were all awesome games too. I preferred them to the SMB3's of the world, with their only flaw being that they were too short for my liking (as with most great games - see Sly Cooper)

And as for the TurboExpress - it took until the GBA before it was finally unseated as the most powerful handheld system available. It was expensive, it ate through batteries like crazy, and it was huge (especially in comparison to a modern day GBA) but it was fun. Plus, being able to just use my TG16 games in it made for a ready-made library. I think my brother still has his.

I've played a lot of consoles, and owned a lot too (Genesis, SMS, PSX, PS2, Dreamcast) and none of them has/had a library that stacks up with the TG16 for pure gaming goodness. There were some stinkers in the TG16 lineup, but there were way more beauties - Military Madness, Bomberman series, Bonk series, Ys series, Drac X, Blazing Lasers (don't get me started on shmups) Street Fighter (SFII was the best version available on any system at the time.)

So, to summarize, I'm glad to see that some of those great games haven't been completely forgotten.
