Got a radeon 9500 pro here, been playing doom3, ut2k4, and hl2 and it works great. had to tweak just a *bit* to get doom3 smoother but for the most part I cant complain when your still getting 50-60 fps in a 2 year old card. I'm still getting my $200 worth. Maybe I'll upgrade in a year to whatever they got for $200. I'm sure my bench marks and yours are VERY similar:)

Its now 6:00 and I've authenticated with something or another 40 times. My day is only half over. I carry 8 keys in my pocket, and about 40 different passwords in my head. I am constantly locking and unlocking various things. My case may be a bit more extreme being a system administrator but trust me you do this too, and its probably just as bad. This was just a quick summary, I'm sure I left off about 100 other authentications. Welcome to Earth.
Whats worse are these kid portable dvd player things that take special cargridges to play MTV music videos. this was voted toy of the year on some kids toy award shot. wtf, theres an award show for toys now. and WTF is up with this toy. you get to watch a 3 minute video of some no talent pop star over and over, then you beg your parents to buy another over priced cartridge so you can continue your brainwashing sessions, only to find that you've got your choice of 5 carts. this "toy" leave absolutely NOTHING to the imagination.
Hell, a Nentendo DS is more creative. Speaking of which, and I know I'm rambling but at this point thats alright because your not reading anyway, Nentendo should port Mario Paint to the DS. Think about it, its got a touch screen, and wifi, imagine the posabilities painting with your friends, and that fly swatter game was pretty good too. I spent hours playing that "game" as a kid. Maybe thats why my favoriate game now is Photoshop. At least it takes more than 10 hours to beat *cough* Half-Life 2 *cough*. What was I saying again? Right, I was wearing an onion on my belt because it was the style at the time.
Picard: You know, there are some words I've known since I was a schoolboy. "With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censured, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably." Those words were uttered by Judge Aaron Satie as wisdom and warning. The first time any man's freedom is trodden on, we're all damaged.
Picard: We think we've come so far. Torture of heretics, burning of witches, it's all ancient history. Then, before you can blink an eye, suddenly it threatens to start all over again.
Worf: I believed her. I helped her. I did not see what she was.
Picard: Mr Worf, villains who twirl their moustaches are easy to spot. Those who clothe themselves in good deeds are well camouflaged.
Worf: I think, after yesterday, people will not be so ready to trust her.
Picard: Maybe. But she, or someone like her, will always be with us, waiting for the right climate in which to flourish, spreading fear in the name of righteousness.
Vigilance, Mr Worf, that is the price we have to continually pay.
Am I the only one that thinks the form factor should look more like a component cd player, or receiver. This doesnt mesh with my current stack o hardware in my living room.
Come to think of it, my DVD player plays DVDs, MP3, and CDs and has no hard drive. Throw in a network card and we're really cooking.
And I'm not so sure this thing would give apple a run for its money in the aesthetics department. The U2 ipod looks more pleasing.
not sure if anyone is still interested in this thread, but..
You right, were not ready for this stuff, and the ramifications of the teleporter and replicator are so large its almost imposible to think of them all. terrorism aside it would be good for man kind, in a way. then again think about it this way, if teleporters and replicators came out next year we would be stuck with 2005 toothpaste flavors for forseeable future, unless some inspired individual decides to make his own toothpaste flavor just for the intrinsic reward. its open source on a physical and global level. in one sense it would fix hunger and many other thing, but it would also hault progress in many other fields. why go to work after you've got a replicator and teleporter? dont have one, get a friend to replicate you one. the only thing left thats not replicatable (i would assume) is land, and its not like people have been fighting for that stuff since the begining of time. what a beautiful fucked up mess it would be. personally i would hope that enough people would realize after a while that hanging out in a hot tub all day and never working would get boring and start going back to work for the better of humanity.
then again, throw hollodecks into the mix and you can just forget it, I'm in the hot tub with 3 blondes and theres nothing you can say to get me out.
people would have no use for cars, so car companies and their workers would go out of business. roads wouldnt need maintinance so all road builders would be out of jobs. there would be no point in air ports, pilots, air planes, plane repair people, oil tankers, harbors, trains, travel agents. think about all the jobs that would be "displaced", and when I say displaced, i really mean lost because a garbage truck driver isnt all the sudden going to become a teleporter repair man. if teleporters were ever invented it would make a huge impact on the world economy, not to mention terrorism and lord knows what else. i could see the governments of the world trying to regulate it, making teleports, like airports but only for rich people and governments and military, but who knows how long that would last before it gets into the hand of the people and all hell breaks loose. people teleporting into brick walls, the overpopulation of hawaii, bank robery. I'm kinda glad we dont live in a world with teleporters, i cant see it being as cool as on star trek, the human race is way too volitile right now, maybe in a few hundred years when we settle down the vulcans will come down and teach us.:)
"Microsoft plans to make available to Windows customers a beta version of a spyware protection, detection and removal tool, based on the GIANT AntiSpyware product, within one month"
"This announcement and the release of the free beta will help consumers regain control over their PCs."
(emphasis mine)
I think that spells it out pretty clearly, at least for the beta. As others have pointed out, yes its a conflict of interests. However considering how bad the spyware problem is, FTA:"A November 2004 IDC study estimated that 67 percent of consumer PCs are infected with some form of spyware.", I believe Microsoft will continue to make security improvements to the operating system, the problem in the first place.
No matter how much you want to blame the "stupid (l)users", Microsoft is still responsible for the insecure code that let some of the spyware install in the first place. I read over the Microsoft spyware website and I think its great that they're trying to get people aware of the dangers and even suggesting solutions like limited user accounts, and ad-aware and spybot S&D.
I'm hoping that the anti-spyware program Microsoft releases will:
1. continue to be free after beta
2. be free for corporate use
3. prevent spyware installations through blacklists or other means
4. evolve into a more manageable solution like Microsoft's Software Update Service which is a must for any Windows network.
You must not be applying the security updates then are you? My highest uptime on my 3 windows 2003 servers has been 50 days, and thats after putting off a security update related reboot in a while. but your right they dont crash, and if anything gets screwey restoring the metabase or restarting the service usually does the trick.
Right click your game shortcut, click Run As. Enter Administrator credentials. Go back to a normal user account, you'll be much safer. You can thank me later.
Win2k3 != $400 if you get it OEM. See here for $295.98. But as others have posted, you need CALs for each user where as with RH you dont and that can make a huge difference (unless its just a webserver, in which case you should be running apache anyway).
I take it your referring to this Dell server? Its not too bad with a P4 2.8 and 256MB DDR2. I've seen these as low as $250 after rebates. Sometimes the PowerEdge SC420 is cheaper than the equivelent desktop from Dell, sans OS.
You cant get the kind of market share Microsoft has with windows when charging for updates. And once you have that market share you cant start charging for updates and keep it. Not only that, its almost as if its Microsoft's duty to keep supporting their server OS. When did NT4 support stop, or is it still around. I know you can pay and get support. Just like its their duty to release XP SP2 that works with pirated CD keys. Aside from switching everyone to a more secure operating system, its just safer for the Internet as a whole for Microsoft to continue business as usual when it comes to updates.
Off to load up Windows Server 2003 SP1 RC1 and see what it breaks:-)!
Any idea how much a CAL cost? User and Device license, or are they all the same now? And doesn't Windows XP, and just about every other MS OS (Pocket PC) come with a CAL?
bullshit, i already pay the cable bill for 100+ channels of crap, yet every week i download the latest enterprise episode because I want to watch it on *my* time and I dont have a Tivo. its not theft if you already own it.
I do the same and I dont feel bad about it at all because I already pay way too much for able TV anyway. The "industries" have been far behind the Internet for as long as I can remember. How long was it after MP3 became popular that an online music store came out. How long do you think its going to be before I can subscribe to Enterprise for $10 a season? Until then RSS > Bit Torrent does the job;)
multi-user machines with different preferences for each application. \documents and settings\$username\local settings\application data\$company\$product
Its annoying, but it makes sense. If all apps were written with their settings in their own folders we would be taking a step backwards and admins would go crazy trying to support multiple users. profiles should be left up to the OS, nix or win, but it would be nice to have some sort utility to make it easier to run programs on USB drives like this.
I'm sure we can have our cake and eat it too, its just a matter of figuring out how to code it all up. damnit now im hungry.
its not non-obvious, its where all your other settings go. \document and settings\local settings\application data\microsoft\outlook
Now read this post again and pay attention to the path. not an ms fan boy, i just dont think its that hard. oh, and ever hear of the xp files and settings transfer wizzard? its under accessories, system tools, great for when upgrading hdd or pc.

My advice to Lycos: Dont stoop to their level. No, I dont have the silver-bullet to spam, but as it was illustrated in the last Lycos-antispam-screensaver discussion in the standard "why your anti-spam solution wont work" form, this isnt going to do any good for anyone. Everyone's bandwidth and CPU cycles who downloaded this screensaver are better off doing something defensive in the spam war.
