    dude, you can get WinXP Pro (not the upgrade edition, not academic license - normal XP Pro) brand new in Canada for $220 or less. That's Canadian dollars too, which equates to approx. 160 of your American bills. Then there's the fact that WinXP service packs are always going to be free. Compare that to Apple, who's charged $129 each for 3 upgrades since March 24, 2001. Sure you can skip an upgrade or two, but you'll pay a serious price in performance.. know anybody still using OSX 10.0 on a G3 machine? LOL! I pity the fool.
    Alternatively, you can run WinXP on a $1200 whitebox PC from my local computer store down the road (again, Canadian dollars - about $900 US) with a P4-2.66GHz and a gig of DDR-RAM, 800MHz FSB, WinXP Pro, etc.
    Hardware savings alone negate the US$160 paid for the OS, and PC hardware is easily upgradeable with off-the-shelf parts for the next ~3-5 years or so.

    summary:
    WinXP plus the next 3 service packs == US$160
    OSX 10.3, 10.4, 10.5 == US$387 (plus inflation)

    Of course, this is all academic unless you can actually afford the hardware, and anybody who wants Apple hardware badly enough will ignore the pricetag completely.

    you obviously have no sense of "right" and "wrong" buddy. Copyright infringement isn't wrong. Since when, exactly, does an artist deserve money every time somebody downloads a song? Since never. That's just common sense. The whole model of intellectual 'property' is against the grain of common sense, and should be abolished. Nobody 'owns' information unless they keep it a fricking secret, and nobody deserves money every time a book is read, a song is played, or my computer gets switched on.
    I realize that this all goes against the grain of your American thinking, and clearly goes against your ridiculous American laws; however, you people think it's OK to terrorize foreign countries every time somebody doesn't kowtow to whichever retard is currently in charge - even a tux-and-cowboy-boots wearing double-speaker who can't read an expensive speech to save his life.
    Remember when America financed al-Quaeda? Poured money into bin Laden's coffers? I do, and so does everybody else in the world with an inkling of world politics. Remember when Poindexter and his butt-buddy Oliver North barely escaped jail (on technicalities, mind you) when they provided weapons (laundered, mind you, through the Iranians) to Nicaraguan terrorists? Remember who put Saddam Hussein in power in the first place, because he looked like a good puppet at the time?
    You Yanks have it all backwards, from copyright to terrorism.

  14. the Linux Report 2002 on Linux Number Crunching: Languages and Tools · · Score: -1
    Hi! My name is p00p, and I'm an independent consultant whose job it is to check out operating systems; I detect weaknesses for a living, which is why I am particularly glad to have Open Sores crap like Linux on the streets.. but enough about my boring job, I can tell that you are here for the Report! With no further ado, let me break it down for ya homez.

    I've checked it once, I've checked it a million times - the numbers don't lie, folks, it appears that Linux on the desktop is an utter failure right out the gate. GNOME is still a floundering fudgepack dependent on the dying kludge-fuck Xfree86, and there's no light at the end of that tunnel as we all know!
    KDE follows right behind, with a hideous mess built on anti-speed-demon Trolltech's QT toolkit, also filtered through Xfree just like GNOME. Ouch. Like the name, Trolltech, but the toolkit is a boner. Sorry guys! I know you all tried really hard and probably gave up maybe three or four hours of watching gay pr0n to pump that code out , but it looks like the only slots and signals people want are the ones that pay out big bucks in Vegas.

    Security is still an issue, but you'd expect that from any amateur Open Sores project. Linux ain't so great, and it appears that the automatic updating mechanism in 90% of Linux installations is nonexistent or broken.. this is probably because Communism is more effective as a political philosophy than programming paradigm.

    Moving along, let's look at the appz people want [emphasis on "want" - editor] and see how many have been ported to Linux. Counting the Gimp (a pity vote) and WordPerfect (oh wait - that's dead) we have a grand total of ONE - I repeat ONE semi-popular app. Mozilla is a useless pig, else we'd be delighted to have it aboard just to give a semblance of competition to Mcrosoft. Maybe thirty years from now 'Zilla will be back to take charge eh! ;)

    Lastly, and perhaps most significantly, it appears that among the children and unemployed hobbyists who currently form the bulk of Open Sores "developers" (term used loosely, no offense intended to legitimate software engineers!) there is a large homosexual contingent that is increasing every year.
    The conclusion is inescapable: folks, Linux is officially gay!

    Hi there! Just a few words, from a frequent beta tester for Linux on the desktop;

    it is painfully obvious that there is no chance that the MS empire will crumble based on the desktop efforts of KDE and GNOME. Latency is still very high, thanks to single-threaded Xfree86, and performance is still low, thanks to resource-hogging KDE/GNOME pigs. In all other areas, Linux remains irrelevant due to a lack of excellent GUI applications. Sorry guys, Koffice doesn't cut it.. people don't use WordPad anymore either, and there's a reason. OpenOffice takes a third of a minute to load on my laptop and shows no sign of lessening - it seems that the OO people still don't understand the cost of loading massive binary files all at once. The API's are still changing with every kernel revision (check out 2.6! woohoo!) but may soon reach stability. I wouldn't bet on it though.. soon there will be open-source API's available only to GPL developers, and a second set only for proprietary software. Welcome to Open Sores, people.

    dependency nightmare-inducing libraries aren't going away yet, so I've got to keep three versions of Glibc and practically everything else too. Can you say "STUPID and inconsiderate assholes?" RPM still doesn't work properly, and probably never will. Still waiting for a stable version after - what? five years already? MandrakeLinux, the so-called 'desktop distro,' never quite makes it out of beta testing either, but the package manager urpmi thingy seemed to almost work in the last Mandrake I tried (8.2? no wait, it was broken.. never mind). One small observation, in fact, has led me to look with distaste upon the whole Open Sores development model. Why do the developers always assume that I've got nothing better to do than compile a fucking kernel just so my sound will work, or tweak directory names just so my libraries don't clobber each other, or other stupid things that are a complete waste of time for anybody besides a developer??? Don't they know ANYthing about releasing "non-beta" software by now? I wonder if anybody in the OSS crowd (besides the sound driver authors) even have working speakers attached to their machines. If it weren't for Mandrake, nobody would have working sound without a non-trivial amount of tweaks. Speaking of tweaks, I think it's about time to string Linus up by the testes. He fucked up.

    You know what? Ignoring all the above, I really just want automount to work right. Windows has had that feature for - oh, about 8 years now. Is this so much to ask?
