  1. Re:Did I miss something? on Real Launches Music Download Service · · Score: 1

Taping songs off of the radio *is* illegal. However, it was never enforced, or at least rarely enforced, because of two reasons. First, the songs are/were of low quality, being reduced by being broadcast over the radio first of all, and being reduced yet again by being transferred to tape. Secondly, taped songs off of the radio tends to have a low distribution... perhaps you, your siblings, and a couple of friends perhaps.

However, it's a whole new ballgame with digital music files. For one thing, the quality of the song is a whole lot better, and is either equal to, or almost equal to, the sound of the CD itself, (depending on what codec you use). Secondly, it is far far easier to distribute digital music files to thousands, if not millions, of your fellow human beings than it is to distribute a taped song from a radio station. Both of these gave the law and the RIAA incentive to actively enforce the law, where taping songs off of the radio didn't really give them that.

A television series based on the movie has been in development Hell for the past few years. Who knows if it'll actually see daylight. If you use Flash or Flash-oriented web sites as extensively as I do, this bug makes Mozilla Firebird 0.6 completely unuseable. To get true Macromedia Flash support in Mozilla Firebird under Windows, you need to create a few registry keys. Normally, this worked fine until the releases starting a few days ago. However, now when you make the registry keys and install Macromedia Flash, it appears to work correctly, but as soon as you re-open Mozilla Firebird, it reverts to the old Netscape "Classic" theme, and adds a few new toolbars such as Help, and QA. Absolutely *nothing* works under this corrupted Mozilla Firebird, rendering Mozilla Firebird 0.6 completely useless. For more information on this nasty bug, please see this Bugzilla entry.

If I eat a poisonous mushroom that I just find growing in a field somewhere, I only have myself to blame in the end.

See, that's the difference between free and commercial. In the end, with free you don't know what the Hell you may be getting. But with commercial, you have a reasonable expectation of what you're getting, and if you don't get it there are recourses you can take.

Oh, please. Microsoft is not dead. Microsoft is one of the longest running software companies in the world, if not *the*. Plus, it intentionally hires the best software developers in the world, at least on the west side of it. They're very aggressive on hiring software coders and visionaries they know can and will deliver good work. Not only that, but there's the small fact that it is sitting on over $40 billion. That's nothing to sneeze at.

Then there's the fact that Microsoft has one keen advantage over OSS. That is the fact that it's centerally managed. In the end, one person has the final say over things, keeping things constant, consistent and flowing smoothly. While with the OSS, there is constant bickering and bantering going on with internal fighting, and code splitting. One recent example is the XFree86 incident. A lot of times reading about OSS development is like being brought back into high school with all the "he said, she said" bullshit.

Say what you will about Microsoft - good, bad, indifferent, but it's here to stay.

I have tried listening to the one or two local college stations, but it was mostly alternative rock, heavy metal, and rap/hip-hop, none of which I enjoy. Oddly enough, I find the music (that which is there, which isn't much), on some local commercial stations more enjoyable than any of the music I've listened to on local college stations. Concerning the readability of physical newspapers over reading them on-line, that's all preference. Some may find that true, but others not. Regardless, it is a fact that in general, the newspaper readers that remain are dying off, and are not being replaced. This fact is already well established by the Newspaper Association of America. For more information on the subject, see an article at Tim Porter's web site. The Retriever's number of readers is unique, and not representative of the general state of America's newspapers.

  18. I don't see the big deal on More on Media Consolidation · · Score: 1, Interesting

To be 100% honest, I don't see the big deal over the issue of media consolidation. Newspapers? Hah. Newspapers are a dead format. It's common knowledge that the current newspapers out there are not gaining any new subscribers to replace the ones that are dying off. Soon enough it won't be worth the printing costs for newspapers to be in the paper business without going completely digital.

Radio? Again, another dead format, save for talk radio. The only time I and others I know listen to the radio is to either catch the local news, traffic and weather while on the way to work and on the way home, and/or to listen to talk radio such as good 'ol Rush Limbaugh. Music stations just aren't worth listening to, both for the low variety of music (rap and hip-hop aren't my forte, but soundtracks are), and because of the low quality of the music they do play. I get better sounding music out of my computer than I do my radio.

Television? For the free airwaves, it's another dead format. The only future of television is in cable and satellite dishes. I remember reading an article a few years ago stating that no television will be free by 2010. Whether that's still the case, I don't know, but it's only a question of when, not "will it happen?" Honestly, who cares who owns two or three local stations when there are 200+ channels to watch? If I want to find out what's happening locally, I can either go to a local news-oriented website, or *gasp* - actually go outside and find out for myself. :)
