  1. Not Such a Bad Thing on MSN Planning to Take on Google? · · Score: 4, Interesting

Honestly, this isn't such a bad thing. I use Google as my main search engine as do most geeks, but even after preaching the virtues of Google for years, my 24 year-old sister *insists* on using MSN Search, as she "finds it easier to access and use MSN Search" for some God forsaken reason. I guess because it's just easier to hit the "Search" button on IE's toolbar than it is to go to Favorites and click on Google.

In any case, if my sister is an example of the standard non-geek masses, getting people to switch from using MSN to Google is difficult at best. If MSN can become more handy and more useful than it currently is, where's the harm in that? It might give Google some competition, which is always good, and increase the productivity of searching the Internet for "the unwashed masses."

  6. No Free Speech in Europe on Europe To Force Right of Reply On Internet Communication · · Score: -1, Troll

If anything, this just goes to show that Europe does not endorse the right of free speech. The U.S.A., despite what might be wrong with it (and there is plenty), upholds more rights of its citizens than the Eurocrats. First, Europe banned Internet "hate speech," and now this. Ronald Reagan was right to strike down the Fairness Doctrine. All it did was stifle political debate, which is necessary for a democratic system to remain democratic.

The Germans and Russians censored all forms of communication before, and for all intents and purposes people recognize that as being a bad thing. All the Eurocrats are doing now is covering the same censorship in salad dressing in hopes of making it more appealing and more tasty, but underneath it's the same old censorship.

I know that the parent post was meant as a joke, but in reality there is discrimination against short people. Most especially against short men. I'm a 26 year-old male, and I'm only 4'10", or I believe approximately 147.4 cm, in height.

Just like everything else in life though, there are advantages and disadvantages. A disadvantage is the local Zoo wouldn't let me buy tickets when I was 21. The lady behind the ticket counter said that my "mother" (pointing to my date), would have to buy the tickets, (apparently you have to be eighteen to buy a ticket to the Zoo... who knew). Talk about embarrasing. However, an advantage is that I'm eye-to-breast level with "average" height women, and have a legitimate excuse to be staring at their breasts. :)

  8. Eastern Europeans and ICQ on AOL Bridges AIM and ICQ · · Score: 5, Interesting

I had an ICQ UIN account in the six digit range, specifically below 500000. I had that number for several years, and registered various e-mail accounts with it. That was my mistake. It turns out that low ICQ UINs have a black market, where Eastern Europeans, especially Russians, tend to "steal" UINs and then sell them off to the highest bidder through various web sites, such as this one. You can use it for a while, a year, maybe two, and then they'll steal it back from you and re-sell it. This happened to me. I once had my primary e-mail account for my ICQ UIN be a @operamail.com address. Eventually, my @operamail.com e-mail address expired, and I switched over to e-mail with my own domain name. I made sure that this was changed with my UIN as well. However, ICQ has this lovely little feature where they'll e-mail your password to any and all e-mail addresses you have *ever* listed with your account. Thus, even though my UIN was set to use an @apparition.org e-mail address, a Russian managed to create an @operamail.com e-mail address that was the same as the one I used before, and used ICQ's password reminder feature to gain access to my account. I found this out because one day ICQ was no longer recognizing my password, and using the same method that the Russian stealer used, I obtained the changed password, and logged on, only to find a half-dozen new contacts and several messages waiting for me, all in Russian. A few days later, I got a message in Russian that roughly translated as, "How dare you steal my UIN from me. Give it back, now!" Riiight... Soon enough, they used the ICQ password retrieval feature again and re-changed the password. This went back and forth for about a week before I gave up and let the Russians win. I e-mailed ICQ support, and received a useless generated reply, telling me how to go about changing my password. Since then, I've realized that ICQ is as secure as a box of Cheerios, and have moved on to different instant messengers.

Then they pulled some men's magazines off their shelves that had less female skin than most women's magazines these days. Now they want to start renting out DVDs, which I'm quite sure are censored? Heh, good luck.

  18. Re:I have to agree... on RIAA Grabs Student's Life's Savings · · Score: 5, Insightful

Everytime I hear people suggest going to concerts to support their favorite artists instead of buying CDs, I laugh. It's not the answer for every situation.

Most of my favorite music are '70s music, ranging from pop to rock to disco, and British and Australian music ranging from pop to opera. Most of the '70s music stars are retired or semi-retired and no longer tour, so the only way I can hear their music and support the artist is to buy their CDs.

For the British and Australian music, since I live in America, it's all but impossible to go to the concerts of British and Australian musicians I like. Again, the only way I can hear their music and support the artist is to buy their CDs.

The current American music, the ones I can go to their concerts, are complete and utter crap, including both the "top 5" music labels and the independents. I can't stand most of it at all, and the rest I'll tolerate at best. So what am I to do? I don't want to support the RIAA, but if I want to hear the music I like and support the artists I like, the only option I have *is* to buy CDs issued by the "top 5" music labels.

Honestly, what did the guy expect? You only own your own work when you either do it and provide it on your own time and space, or if you own your own company. When you work for a company, and make something on company time and put it up using company resources, guess what? It's owned by the company. If they like it, it stays up. If they don't, it comes down, as was the case with WASTE. You have very little or no say in the matter once you finished creating it.

Mouthing off in his blog doesn't help matters either. Honestly, to me this just displays immaturity. Not a good thing, not a bad thing either. Just stating it as I see it. He's still young, he'll probably eventually mature and realize the world works on different terms than his, and not vice versa. It would be naive and immature otherwise, and naivety and immaturity is what Justin Frankel has displayed in spades the past few weeks. Welcome to the real world, it's called "growing up and accepting responsibility."
