Umm, Actually, we are currently migrating several tax systems from a government mainframe system to a Sun Solaris system. Mirrored solaris boxes running an Oracle database, mounted from an EMC SAN. IO is not an issue, and we are running Microfocus Cobol for our back-end batch.

I would like to say, however, that much to my disappointment, we will be going forward with .NET in future projects. We have actually taken a look at COBOL.Net from Fujitsu, and though I don't think we will be using it, .NET is where we are heading. Mainframes, however, are seen as the proprietary means of locking folks in, not .NET.

Companies that have been locked into mainframes for so long are trying to escape from that "Big Iron Prison" to Microsoft. Ironic, isn't it? :)

Government never saw a tax it didn't like. It has also never liked not being able to get in on a tax that others are getting. Odds are that as soon as the states are able to tax Internet commerce, the cities are going to start trying to figure out how they can get "their fair share" of the pie.

    You have a good point:
I want the KDE environment on my computer, not just kicker and kwm with a lot of GNOME apps and Red Hat apps connected to them.

What I fail to see, however, is how RedHat has done wrong by Bero. See, you can still do exactly what you are talking about by installing vanilla KDE on your Redhat box. However, KDE is developing their software for a number of different distros. It seems logical that a distro would take KDE (or whatever) bundled with their software and customize it for their own purposes (in this case to make it more seamless esp. for newbies).

This is a good business decision if they want to broaden appeal for both Redhat and Linux as a whole. If you want the KDEnvironment, then install it as such!

Another idea for KDE (or Redhat) would be to include a switchdesk-type option for switching back to vanilla KDE, or to Redhat-branded KDE (or Debian-KDE...etc).

  15. With Redhat on this one... on Bero Quits Red Hat Over Treatment of KDE · · Score: 5, Insightful

I fail to see what Redhat is doing that could so offend Bero that he would quit his job with them. Redhat has already acknowledged that they have more Gnome experience on their staff, and Bero quitting will only exacerbate that problem. It seems to me that he is only creating a larger problem for KDE by leaving a position of influence at Redhat over something that appears to be rather benign, and actually insightful on Redhat's part. Looks like big egos will always get in the way of better software.

Keep in mind that there's no single universal moral code, nor are moral codes absolute.

I couldn't disagree more. There ARE absolutes that govern our existence. There are laws that govern morality as there are laws of physics that govern our physical existence. There are physical consequences for violating physical laws, and moral consequences for violating the laws of morality.

Don't try to tell me that there aren't, because asserting that morality is relative becomes a pretty ridiculous philosophy when a 15 year old girl is raped by a 40 year old man. Despite the fact that he asserts that it is within his "moral code" to do so doesn't mean that I wouldn't put my vote for the death penalty if I were sitting on the jury.

Even a moral relativist has to acknowledge that society cannot function if society doesn't establish absolutes and stick to them. Our society is disintegrating in front of our very eyes because of attitudes like this.
