By "closed architecture" you really mean "lack of expandibility". Windows isn't any less closed than Apple; there's just a lot more software on Windows.
Expandibility options are limited on ANY laptop, or on the Mac Mini or those SFF PCs. And a lot of those cheaper windows desktops lack PCIe/AGP slots for upgrading the video beyond the mediocre on board video. I can still upgrade the ram on board, and hard drive. Your options of upgrading the optical drive are limited but that's true with most laptops.
A lot easier to use? Not if you've been using a PC for twenty years.
But that's using a PC with 3 major revisions- 3.1 to 95, 98/95/ME to 2000, or 2000 to XP. For people switching from 95/98/ME to XP, they got a double whammy- a change to the GUI and a change to the concepts behind windows (multiple user logins and beyng a "sysadmin" on your PC, not just simply running dos/windows). Vista promises to be quite different still next year; what exactly would be so different in switching from XP/2000 to MacOS this or next year?
My sister in law got a Powerbook last year for Christmas. 5 minutes after plugging it in, she was good to go and was using her mac, and proceeded to make a photo-book (some product Apple sells) using photos she had stored on some Memory sticks she had from her trip to Hawaii last year. She's been using windows for over 10 years. She's had to "adjust" of course because there's no control panel and things work a bit differently. I found the Mac to be a little strange to use, mainly due to keyboard layout on her laptop- no home/end or pageup/down keys on her laptop which I use a bit (and I've been using windows for 13 years, but used to use os/2 and the amiga before windows).
The terrorists have various sources of incomes. Shutting off the oil spigot has proven to be difficult; at best we're decades away from moving ourselves off the oil teat. What about the rest of the world? It'll take them longer until/unless oil prices double/treble what it currently runs for.

The MPAA/RIAA do not want to distinguish between the guy selling cds or dvds on the corner for $5 a pop where the cash goes to an Al Qaeda cell to fund bomb making and a bit torrent file of the star wars movie or 50 cent's the massacre even though few people are ever enriched by the latter.
With windows, you download a program and double click the install button. It doesn't matter if you are running Windows 98 / ME, NT, 2K, or XP. The thing installs and (sometimes) suns correctly.
Yeah, as long as you ignore the "unzip/rar and run setup" vs "executable zip" vs "msi install" vs "exe install" configurations. The differences generally don't matter; the install simply works. And linux installations needs to become easier/more consistent esp. across distros.
Now after installing 2 programs that "conflict" somehow with one another (or according to tech support they do) try uninstalling one. It's a crapshoot whether the uninstall will get everything out or not.

Dialup is popular because it's cheap, it's the way people have been doing the internet for 10 years running (well maybe 5 years since most people who've been online for 10 years are probably doing the broadband thing) and its something they're used to, and they can't justify the $10 or so increase in spending on the internet a month for broadband.

Over the past 6 months I've had a series of problems with Firefox that were resolvable by deleting my profile, reinstalling firefox and regardless of which route I chose, going through the arduous task of remembering all of my extensions and reinstalling them.
A big pain in the ass for me, but at least it was pretty resolvable. I had different IE problems that would only be fixed if I did a clean OS install which I refused to do. From time to time, various SP or other IE updates would manage to force IE to work right once again.
If my bank (suntrust) allowed me to use firefox, I'd never have to use IE for anything again. And this is a major step in my possible, eventual migration to linux/bsd based OS.
And not really caring for it much... it doesn't seem to work easy in terms of the playlist and whatnot. Doesn't auto-scroll if you're trying to move a file from the bottom to the top.
I also think that some channels that are less popular will simply get removed, regardless of the wishes of the fans of _those_ networks feel, which can be unfortunate if you happen to be a fan of that network. I may not care about HGTV but what if it were more popular than Boomerang? Which channel is going to get dropped first to make way for another channel?

(a $140 or so scan doubler, a NIC for the same price, a $200 or so expansion board to put a 1200 into a standard PC case...).
My dream would be to retool the A1200 (or A4000) so as to produce a machine that supported some more current standards (USB 1.1/2.0, firewire, Compact Flash, SD cards) in order to make the classic amigas more useful/nice to use daily.

Copyright is an exclusive right to control commercial usage and anything non-commercial SHOULD not have anything to do with copyright at all. That is a common understanding of the law. No matter how the law gets twisted by special interests who want to twist the word "commercial" till it breaks, that's what it was supposed to mean and that's how the majority feels.
So my copying my friend's cd is not "commercial" use. That makes sense to me and is probably how most people view or interpret the way copyright laws should act... you shouldn't expect to get away with selling copies of Daredevil to people that you'd made, but giving copies away to people (letting them get a copy of yours) is acceptable.

If your goal is to overtake the #1 application in use, you will want your project to be ported to multiple platforms.
If you want to provide a free quality product to as many people as possible, you will (again) want your project to be ported to multiple platforms.

- problem with code

Cell phones will only displace ipods if cell companies allow people to link cell phones with computers with the same sort of ease that the ipod has.
