"As I understand it, Canadians pay a surcharge on recordable media (DVD-R, CD-R, etc., and tapes, both audio and video), with this surcharge purportedly to be paid out to copyright holders. If this is correct, would it not be the case that the people making the copy would be protected against suit only if the copy was being made to media for which the surcharge was paid? So if you transferred the music file from someone else's computer to a CD-RW in your machine, it would be protected, but not if you transferred the file to the hard drive on your machine?"
They also charge that on hard drives. If you ever buy a DAP with a hard drive in Canada or bring one in to the country through customs (Like I did with my Rio Karma.) they will charge you a certain amount based on storage capacity. Therefore transfering to the hard drive in your computer should be protected the same as making a copy of a CD to blank media. If it isn't, then why do we have to pay the same charge when we buy them [hard drives]?
For those of you who enjoy the minibosses and other music incorporating videogame's into their music I would recommend checking out Machinae Supremacy, they even offer their music for download in Ogg Vorbis.:)
You can slip in a 40Gb drive but its just a few millimetres too thick to properly close the Karma up again. Riovolution has plenty of pictures of the operation to install it and nearly close it up again.
Rather than using explorer, replace it with LiteStep or another of the F/OSS shells avialable for Windows. Litestep has come has come a long way as have some of the themes, I can recommend Non|Step.

I've had my Karma over two years now and it works flawlessly and doesn't even have a scratch. I can't imagine buying any other player myself as I've yet to find anything that does Ogg Vorbis/FLAC, has a well designed interface (GUI and hardware wise), drop in dock with ethernet, long battery life and great sound quality. My only complaint is that all I can fit on it is 20Gb. If anyone knows any other players that fit the above and has 40GB, I'd like to know.
"There's currently almost 10,000 people logged in, which may seem small, but in Eve there's only one server."
One server cluster which was intended to hold 30k people live and have over 100k subscribers according to CCP during alpha/beta. Going by those projections the game isn't doing so well. Not to mention how far behind schedule the game is. Most of the features promised in alpha/beta that were supposed to be in before retail still are in development and only a few have actually been patched in during castor and shiva. (Where are my contract systems or stock market? These were some of the things that interested me the most when I heard about EVE way back when.)
"Still, a very good game, with a mostly mature community of players (more so than most)."
Right, and thats why no one hardly roleplays or acts mature. Nearly everyone behaves like its Counter-Strike in space. EVE could also really use some sort of naming policy so people don't fly around with names such as r0xx0r1337, etc.
Going back to the parent post... "X2 - The Threat is a good space game, shame about its lack of multiplayer. Kills the longevity."
What killed X2 was the black asteroids against black space that made combat a complete pain in the ass. The story was also horrid, I couldn't stand to have anything to do with the story-related missions. Other than that it was a good game, though.
Alot of people moved over to EVE Online after Earth & Beyond shut down.
I used to play it [EVE Online] during the beta and after release and then again just around the time castor was released. About 7 months total before I ended up selling my account because it was so absolutely dull. (Unless you like mining/looting NPCs/ganking players endlessly. It was sure pretty, though.)
I really wish we'd see more Space games, such as MMORPGs/RTS/etc or even single player ones but considering how bad most sell (Generally they flop from a publishers view.) or how bad alot of them play I probably won't get my wish. Star Trek Online sounds nice in theory but it is the SWG team doing the development. *shudder* They already annouced instancing zones in the ships and that ranks are only related to your experiance and has no real purpose. (Can't have power over players or abuse will happen! Bah, give me a break. 'Carebears' ruin everything when RolePlayers want to have _fun_.)
Sounds like the perfect buisness plan, after everyone runs out and buys the new one...Release one with wifi support for streaming! Seems logical from a buisness view-point to me.
Local is generally way more expensive than buying the same item in the USA. I order most of my stuff from the states as a lot of items are almost double the price to buy from a Canadian store(Good example of this was the ATi Radeon 9800 PRO at release, $399usd which was roughly $540Cad after currency conversion but stores here charged $700+CAD for it. Ram is also another great example and still is to this day.). The only problem is customs who likes to ding you for not only GST but PST and that totals to 14.5%. Not to mention how lots of things like to get banged up and damaged by Canada Post.
I always hear about the horrible UPS fees but I've never experianced any for duties thankfully. The last item I ordered through UPS 3-5 day shipping actually arrived the very next morning from the states for all of $10usd roughly for shipping and the item was more than the amount required for customs to ding it for tax.
I couldn't agree more strongly, this is the single most prevailing reason I've quit playing every MMORPG. The most recent being EVE, a typical day was like: "Concentrate all fire on the forward apoc." "OMGWTFPWN N00B, GO4 RAVEN 1ST!!!"
Stupid character names and dialog from stupid people are doing nothing but pulling the genre down for anyone who wants to actually have some sort of role playing related fun. At least back in the day on muds they'd be banned for not role playing.
Indeed the Karma is, I rushed out to buy one back in December and I couldn't be more happy with it. Long battery life, plays FLAC/Ogg Vorbis, 5 band parametric eq, Almost LCARS like interface, sexy and functional/efficient design. The only thing it needs now is the GUI for replaygain and some acessories such as a remote. Not to mention it was the cheapest of all the other players.
Perhaps ICANN should start acquring money on the internet through other means, pr0n seems to be pretty successful to me and seems a logical step. It is after all why the internet is around. Perhaps enforce some sort of pr0n levy?
The nacelles that are in pairs contain the warp coils which are also in pairs. They allow the ship to 'submerge' into subspace. They inject plasma into the warp coils to cause a reaction which the subspace field then counters by creating a warpfield.
Yeah but if your bird of prey can fire while cloaked it's not really a big deal. Unless the pesky Enterprise comes along, then your pretty much screwed thanks to some sudden deus ex machina event.

I for one welcome our new super intelligent mice overlords. *ducks*
Bug 220900 has been around for awhile. I have encountered it every install of firefox since 0.6 on various machines, both windows and linux.

Does it work with the activex plugin for mozilla?
http://www.iol.ie/~locka/mozilla/plugin.htm
I'm curious but not enough so to put a hole like activex in firefox.

We'll need to round up some people with speech impairments as well.
How would a starship operate without such a captain at the helm?
I got the darn Starfleet Dress uniform all ready for it and everything, what a waste. What a P'taQ!

Thats a very brief explanination, you can read a hell of alot more about it if you have the time. I sadly, had that time...
