This once glorious site went from news posts and and the opinions of readers that I actually respected, to AC's weak trolling attempts, self righteous grammar and spelling cops, crapflooding, and crybabies who spend the day trying for FPs only to point out that the last story was a dupe.
Consider me retired.
And I hope that those who mod me offtopic/troll/whatever will see the irony in the way they are spending their mod points
You assume that it was the hardware, and not a more likely culprit like a dirty disc?
DDE's happen all the time on most any hardware that uses CDs/DVDs and lenses. To assume that it was a hardware problem, like you said, sounds very "me-too"
To clarify my OP: I was referring to the HDR capabilities in the NVidia 7800 GPU... there's even a quote from Todd Howard in the original press release back in July.
To me this game begs to be played on PC. With the HDR lighting its going to blow the 360 version out of the water, along with some other shading/lighting effects the 360 wont have..
And the TESCS - thats just a must have. I made the mistake of playing this on Xbox first, and while it rawked, I wish I could have modded it. It would have made an already ridiculously deep game even better. I nearly bought it twice so I could mess with the TESCS, but I got into WoW instead.
First off, your analogy in your first item is not accurate. While I agree that they really shouldnt charge for it, saying that the reason malware exists because of the "poorly architected Windows environment" is like saying Cavendish is responsible for the H-Bomb. I doubt Billy had the foresight to see a business model being built upon a poorly designed system.
Second, while IANAL, despite the DOJ's imposition, MS still has the right to design and develop and brand products bundled with their OS. Putting theirs in place by default does not seem to violate the court's order. They provide customers with an "out", and I think as long as its spelled out clearly how to remove the software without any ill side effects or instability (heh), then I dont see how this could be a point of contention.
The community cannot have it both ways. Windows is the most prevalent OS out there, everyone knows its a security exploit waiting to happen. As such, if MS attempts to do even the "apparently" right thing by designing software to fix what they screwed up, and try to distribute it, then it appears they are pushing out other anti-spyware companies. Yet these companies would not exist if it were not for MS's security exploits. If they do not attempt to distribute it, they are seen as being criminally complacent.
Perhaps MS should just leave them alone, so each respective company's revenue stream will not dry up, and give something to the/. members to post about?
While I dont doubt that somewhere MS has some type of revenue-generation card up their sleeve (and should not be allowed to play), I think that perhaps the tech community can try to take this with a grain of salt and see where it goes before predicting its MS's first move in taking down the anti-spyware establishment.
Meh, looks like I did, but frankly I have grown weary of the so called mighty/. ep33ns lately. It seems to be worse than usual, especially those of the AC variety.
I also do not like the fact that my karma is so high. I am much more comfortably knowing that at least one person out there hates me.
There were some pretty excellent images taken, especially those of the booth bunnies who secretly laugh at the con fanboys. check out www.worldofwarcraft.com for the gallery.
As a side note, I certainly hope that PLDs can lend a little help tanking. It will let me focus on being a fullforce DPS whore warrior that is just dying to be unleashed.
There are, I noticed, far more adults at the con than I thought. But maybe its because of the guild I run with on Sargeras.
I moved from South Florida a couple of months ago, and most of the local McD's all offered free WiFi already.
You'd get a free hour to go along with your fries... although I never used it, so I am not sure what was involved in getting access to their network, or how time was regulated.
So the McD's WiFi part isnt really new. I dont know what would have prevented any DS users then from using their service.
Oh! The horror of it all. First you endure the worst natural disaster in the history of the country, followed by the joke that is FEMA, only to be relegated to using Billy's browser instead of any of the others that combined hold what, 15% of the browser market?
Come on. Isnt getting your things replaced more important than what freaking browser you use to file a claim in?
I repeat - this is not news. Its only cannon fodder for the M$ haters (yes, I am one of them - but I am certain the people of those areas hit by the hurricanes have better things to do than worry about whether their browser supports tabs or not).
And I'd offer you my house, if you'd be willing to fit with the other evacuee family we are scheduled to house.
That's just for the record. Carry on *waves goodbye to karma*
None of you are posting this from the Astrodome. And I dont think many people who have access to PCs at this point are getting to the FEMA website from anything other than a public terminal (library, internet cafe, etc).
Like it or not IE is the majority market browser. That means that FEMA (which, dont get me wrong, has mishandled everything) doesnt CARE about CBC.
Perhaps its because they want to get claims handled quickly (although I'm probably giving them too much credit).
How many people in the Astrodome are testing this in Firefox? No one here's filing a FEMA claim, I'd be willing to bet my house on that.
This became news because it has IE all over it. No other reason than to throw another piece of meat to the/. first post campers.
Who cares what browser theyre using? Isnt there anything else more important to report on? Something that needs duping?
Dude, there is a lot of money to be made in spreading broadband with as little regulation as possible. Home computers are already low margin and poor home computers wouldn't really make any companies much money.
This has nothing to do with the point I was trying to make, AC.
But to take your point a step further, do you think, at the poverty level, that a $400 computer, with "reasonable" broadband access charges, is going to look at all appealling to anyone looking to make ends meet?
I can assure you they dont give a fuck about Dell's or HP's margins.
This plan becomes about providing a service that only the middle/upper classes and business can really afford.
Look, I am not screaming for the liberals to come to the rescue here (I am a moderate and fall on both sides of the political fence on a lot of things), but to me, this seems like more corporate kowtowing by the government.
Why does the government care if I have access to broadband, but does not care enough about the lower classes who cannot afford computers?
Mr. Martin (and the FCC) fail to address the growing "technocracy" brewing in this country. There is no discussion on how this increased access will positively affect communities, specifically those with great economic need, and instead focus on corporate revenues and ensuring that "more companies have a chance to make money in broadband"
Maybe its just me, but perhaps the Bush administration should focus on the US's literacy and mathematical skills compared to the rest of the globe, as opposed to our position in the world's broadband distribution.
A type of content which has a too narrow appeal of the same techno hipster show-offs who insist they keep their iPod mini's in their hands so they can show it off to the world.
I keep my mini out because I look like I'm reaching for my twigs and berries through my pocket while I'm fumbling for the next track button.
For me, while not the techno hipster, its mostly just to avoid an indecent exposure rap
It is shocking and appalling just how much influence the sue-happy individuals in our country have over what is meant to be so-called "free flow of information".
If it isnt corporate America, its judicial America.
The term "free" seems about as overused and misplaced these days as any other word used in BS corporate mission statements.
So Sony and MS should focus on making their consoles easy to program for and make sure that they have the power and features that gamers want. They need to focus on controller comfort and size. They can't focus on "fun" because that is up to the third parties that make games for those consoles.
If you cant focus on "fun" in gaming then you have no business being in the business. But that aside, perhaps you realize that MS has devoted, and is continuing to devote, large amounts of capital into its own gaming development house (Microsoft Game Studios), and in many cases is failing badly (XSN Sports? Anyone?), but in some cases is hitting a home run (PGR2, Forza, Halo). Same is true for Sony - they hold a major stake in Square Enix, and have their own development house. Both are directly involved in the game development business. How you could look this over or forget about it is beyone me.
Guess what, it is really easy to make innovative games when console games before did not exist. The market is maturing and things are falling in to genres. There are still plenty of great and innovative games that come out. Just more games now are built on previous genres.
This is a complete copout and a common excuse played over and over in the game development community. But I hate to break it to you - innovating something that already exists is far different than cloning/copying the proverbial granddaddy.
A perfect example is Tetris. How many sad clones have you seen? But consider those that took the basic concept and truly made it different - Dr Mario, SegaSwirl (for the Dreamcast), Bubble Bobble... They werent taking a tried and true formula to the bank. They went out on a limb and thought of new ways to entertain and challenge gamers.
Look at it this way - why are Doom, Unreal, and Quake so revolutionary, when countless others before and after tried the SAME things (kill stuff while not getting killed), and get panned? Its not cause of graphics entirely - its gameplay. Boring, redundant gameplay.
The PS2 has plenty of excellent RPGs. Nintendo is really weak in the RPG department...it could use some generic RPGs because it is failing to hit that demographic... What's sad is that you are so biased. Sony and MS are focusing on the only thing they can focus on: their console. They don't make games so they can't do anything about compelling you. But seriously, if you can't find good games on any of the 3 consoles, then you are either ignorant or a liar.
i am not suggesting none of the consoles have good games - I own all 3 consoles, own others not mentioned here, have gamed since the Atari 2600 days, and hold a bias to no manufacturer, brand, etc.
Saying they dont make games is factually incorrect. I also never said I couldnt find good games on the 3 consoles. Everything you posted here overall is grossly out of context, if not just plain wrong.

I guess book reviewer's a gamer too
Oh wait...
Press Release
Example of HDR/non-HDR lighting effect
I wasnt referring to DOSBox as Windows only. I was referring to the Arena executable.
If you want to try the one that started it all, go here. Its free. Windoze only and you need DOSBox.

Right. And /. has never taken down an Apache site. Mod me down, you haughty assholes. At least I've got the sack to post this using my real UN
More troll mods please. You only knocked my karma down to "Good" - what kind of effort is that
We STILL have to put up with the ridiculous fictitous nomenclature? Man, if this isnt the worst attempt at getting another buzzword going...

Go on, mod me troll... you know its true. I'm all for calling a spade a spade, but it goes both ways.
I am surprised by the questions/comments regarding practicality. Whatever happened to doing something neat simply because "you could"?
