  3. Get a better DataCenter on Peter Gabriel's Web Server Stolen · · Score: 5, Interesting

The company I work for has all of its servers in a secure colo. The place offers secured cabinets, secured cages with racks, and even does walled off areas of the datacenter floor with a secured door for high paying customers like Google. The facility is manned 24/7 with cameras all over outside and in. The rear of the facility is fenced and gated.

If you're on the roster for your company with floor access this is the process you have to go through to even get to your server:
-If it's at night, you have to use your RFID badge to get in the front door
-Check in with security and sign out for your key if the door is not a combo lock
-Security needs to buzz you through the first door
-RFID badge and finger print through two or three doors
-Iris scan in the man-trap to get to the datacenter floor
-Combo or the checked-out key to get in to the cabinet or cage

On regular intervals they check the people on the floor to make sure that you're suppose to be there.

I'm not saying this place is a fortified facility that can handle a team of insurgents. However, I'd feel that my equipment is safe from the theft I've been hearing about at some datacenters. For a cabinet with a 1Mbps commit data rate with an actual 10Mbps internet connection and IPs, it's about the same cost of having a T1 to the office.

For those that want to know who we use, it's Quality Tech.

The game is rated M for Mature; it's very similar to movie R ratings. If it's not already law, the stores should make it a policy to not sell M rated games and R rated movies to minors. Beyond that, it's the parent's responsibility to police their children's entertainment intake.

Don't like ESRB's rating criteria? Start your own game rating system. Too lazy to do that, but still want to bitch about their rating system? Go to the MPAA and have a good look at their past rating (ex. Top Gun, Ace Ventura); take action against them first, then go after the MSRB.

"If you've been on one of her escorts and had to be plane guard for an aircraft carrier, you know her for a fickle wench out chasing a breeze."
If one were to be the captain of a ship that's providing escort for the Kitty Hawk and given the duty of guarding her planes, one would know that it is a difficult job since the aircraft carrier is constantly changing heading and speed to help the pilots with safe take offs and landings.

"Trading paint with 84,000 tons of US diplomacy underway going full-tilt-boogy is not going to be a career enhancer."
Going up against an 84,000 tone US aircraft carrier, which is a persuasive deterrent against battles in it's own right, that's moving at full speed is not a good idea since it would probably result in death.

"Not that this wipes the egg off the face of whoever was in charge of the escort screen [...]"
If the theory that the Chinese sub surfaced out of fear of crashing into something because of unfamiliarity with the area were true, this still does not remove any embarrassment from the individual in charge of providing escort and supposed to be keeping non-US Navy vessels outside of the perimeter in the first place.

For the sake of argument I will say this is sort of what's going on with Internet purchases. However, rarely can I find a better deal in a B&M store than on the Internet. Buying from a B&M, I expect to pay extra due to the extra overhead, supposed better personal service, and the ability to have it in my hands new. Personally I'm a little annoyed sometimes by being treated like a criminal every time I've bought something from their establishment.

Perhaps I will end up in the same situation one day because I had enough of the searching for being a paying customer. Everyplace I've walked out of without buying something, I have never been searched. That's a bit off kilter to search a paying customer, but not search someone that didn't buy anything.
