  1. Re:Project Entropia on Real Money Inside in MMORPGs? · · Score: 1

Oh, it actually worked. Several people (me included) actually made money off it. However, you didn't make money by farming items; you might just as well lose money from fighting monsters. What you actually made money from was selling items to other players, because you could charge more than what the 'system' considered it worth.

The problem with PE is that instead of as with EQ and other games, the devs gets their slice no matter what people do inside the game, in PE the players and the devs are fighting over the same money. It really didn't work; for anyone to make any kind of money, someone else would have to lose it first. Of course, some people did make money, but most people just got pissed off by losing real cash to fuel other people's profits. I think the only way to get a decent RL-GW thing going would be to 'build in' ebay, to allow secure trades, but with about the same liability of today (your problem since it's not us selling, basically).

The fact is, they are already taking down auctions through the VeRO program. You can even see some of these mails that users has posted on the official SWG forums. One warning first, do it again and you're screwed, basically. For some reason, they let most of them remain, though, and I think this is because they are trying to track down the sellers and tie them to one/several game accounts. I wouldn't be suprised if they are bidding on the auctions themselves.

I don't think that's the fundamental part. It has to start with the computer 'watching over' you, and that's the sentient part. The definition is somewhat stretched, though. Basically, they want systems that essentially detects things really well, and then make predictions (statistics are involved, I assume) based on that. The problem is that sentient can mean two things, and for most people those things are total oposites. In no way does this mean that computers will get a 'soul' or whatever you wish to call it just like that.

Well, it's so-so successful. It's been publically available for about a year, but there has been quite a lot of messups, and us players aren't really very positive, even though it's not a sinking ship situation yet. How it's done here is that the company, MindArk, guarantees the user/buyer directly, that the items/money will in fact be counted as real items, for all that it matters. It's still virtual items, but once you put money in, they are liable for that money. If you trade items to someone else, it will become their money. This is the total oposite of what other game companies does. Most of the time it's "You don't own it, so we have no responsibility for it", here it's more like "You paid for it, you 'own' it, and we'll make sure it's treated as real value." Now, this comes with a lot of troubles, but they are mostly related to bugs. They haven't been able to reimburse everyone who has lost items (and thus money) due to bugs, even if they have promised to. There is a suprisingly small amount of ownership-related problem, really.
