Good point, though it doesn't seem quite as bad. Really both friendster and orkut need a nice way of separating languages in a way that people can choose which ones they want to see. I'm sure there are people who don't care to read a ton of English messages the same way I hate getting spammed by Portuguese. I find friendster to still be usable, while the Brazilian kudzu that infests orkut pretty much ruins it for anyone else. Not that I am down on the Brazilians or anything, certainly a nation of swell folks, I just can't understand what they are saying to me, and while I like learning languages other than English, Portuguese isn't on the list.
Friendster is still one of the best services, even though it is trying to rise form the ashes. Orkut needs to solve the Brazilian problem. Myspace has always been terrible, and the fat wad of cash was a huge stroke of luck. Facebook is the biggest "me too" I have seen in a while and they should take whatever offer they get and run with the money.
Social Networking should be an IP protocol not some jackass website.
I have to say having built PCs and worked on, umm... "Iron" that putting a new board in my Origin servers or Cisco routers was really f*cking easy. Much better than those POS PCs.
Building PCs is a useful skill but when you buy that "UNIX Iron" it generally comes with a service contract. A nice dude shows up at the agreed upon time and fixes it.
To get on topic. I have built easily over 100 PCs over the years. It's like snapping together legos and I still have a few I run BSD on.
I use Macs for devlopment and home use because I don't have time to waste dicking around with Linux.
Slashdot is about bitching that you wet your pants while playing a massively multiplayer jerk-fest and not even bothering to wonder what life would be like if you went outside, voted in an election, voluteered your time, rode a bike to work, or talked to anyone that you didn't already know.
So they can bitch about a bunch of hippy/yuppies buying a bunch of crap to fill thier SUVs to drive out to the desert to get naked and do drugs. While they drive thier SUV to stuff thier fat faces with pizza and whine that other people might have a different idea of fun than they do.
Don't let it bother you. They will die lonely and crabby just like they are now.
You can bet that people who go to Bruning Man don't sit around talking about what idiots people on Slashdot are. Why? because they are busy living thier lives and don't have time to care.
Damn Straight. MySQL has been about the dollars for quite a while now. And why should any one fault them for that?
I fault them for making a crap DB. Sleepycat and SQL Lite are far superior in that space. There is no reason for MySQL to exist except marketing that the fanboys eat up. I don't know why people keeep benchmarking MySQL vs. PostgreSQL. I think it is to continue the myth that MySQL is a Database. Benchmark MySQL vs. a bubble sort and it will really shine.
I don't really understand your point. I find Apple hardware to be generally easy to work on in comparrison to equivalent hardware. Powerbooks are a bitch to work on because laptops are a bitch to work on. I haven't disassembled anything other than an iPod but I imagine other small consumer media devices are equally painful. I can't even comprehend what you mean by saying that the iPod drive is inconvenient to move files from... it fuctions like any other firewire drive. You'll also find that many applications do not have obvious extra features with every last thing you can do listed in pull down menus. Many of the extra functions are lurking there for when you are ready for them. At the OS level quite a few spiffy things are done on the command line or by editing conf files...etc..
Open the freaking terminal for crying out loud!:)
I have to wonder if you have ever spent any time using a Mac other then poking at it in CompUSA:)
I had to replace a dead optical drive in my G4 12". If I had only followed the recommendation to tape the screws to the boxes on the screw guide it would have gone a bit faster and I wouldn't have 3 screws left over:)
These fixit guides greatly simplified and illuminated the process.
Not that it is hard to generally take things apart and put them back together, but when you are trying to make a decision on wether to pry something up or not... it is nice to know someone has gone through the trouble of telling you how to do such things without breaking them.
Next up I replace the hard drive... which thankfully won't be as hard as the frelling optical drive.
Not sure, I use 192 AAF... I figured anything higher than 384 was BS.. except perhaps for the newer stuff. I do of course run into albums encoded at 192 mp3 with no other choice.
The price is right, and I support the artists through normal conduits....
hmmm slashdot thought I was trying to insert tags.. that will teach me not to preview..
should have read:
If you really wanted to be ethical and make sure most of your money went to "artist" you should get get all of thier music for free and buy some tickets to the show the next time "artist" is in town. Buy a t-shirt while you are there.
Heh, I wasn't disagreeing with you. I was taking the long way around to agreeing :)
:)
Finding a Filipino bride is not high on my list either

20 minutes? You drive too fast or have never been to a major city in the USA. :)
Parent f*cking rules :)
I think milk came out of my nose and everything.
:) It's a bike joke sorry. I should have realized this was an innapropriate forum for such things... :)
With a bicycle it would take you 5-7 minutes.
If your job requires you to wear a name tag, carry a gun, or administer a Windows system, you have made a serious vocational error.
Now I'll be able to walk right through Customs without stopping.
Riiiiiight.
Yeah. There was a time when the fact that the number in my NIC Handle being '6' got me all sorts of tail.
Wait no, that never happened.
Girls, Girls! Your're both pretty! :)

I use BSD and Linux on servers.
Like NASCAR?? What good is a rocket that can only go left?

Hmmm... I used to be roomates with an A-List Blogger. I'm going to put that on my resume right away.
nah, with MySQL you handle all of the cache mangement in your application.

Hmm I just tried it on 3 different macs running the same version of Safari... No pinwheel of beachy eternal dirtnap here.
Actually I have never found a dive computer that works with anything but windows.
There is nothing stopping a person from watching the protocol on a windows machine an implementing it on a mac however.
I started such a thing with my Oceanic dive computer before I realized that I just plain didn't care.
I use the oceanic as a bottom timer for the most part now.. though the VR3 does look appealing.
If one of our first 7 just died a age 77, don't you think we are taking our sweet time improving on those missions?
r.i.p.

they could charge $0.25/meg and give money to the dolphins.. and the service would still be superior.
anyway there are better ways to make sure the artist gets paid than giving your money to the record companies.
