Hate to say this, but this is the sort of thing Roland does.
However everyone bitches at him for it.

Mirrordot seems quite good at handling the load (theres a link lower in the comments)

    1) How many slashdot editors actually read the submissions?

    2) Is there a SIMPLE one off search point to put keywords into and get listings of the accepted submissions? This should NOT include wading through tonnes of comments slightly similar.
(before you open your mouth and say Google, think - google won't catch the dupes within a couple of days of posting, only the older ones)

    3) Does it matter THAT much if theres an occasional dupe. (Yes I realise you are a paying subscriber, and in your case, its just one article you miss out on)

I went away from slash for about a week whilst we moved house recently, and am still shocked at the number of articles I notice I've missed. The web is a big place, and many people coming and going, we can't all see everything all the time, so occasionally dupes come in.
How many times in your life have you heard a dupe joke, or seen a tv show repeated?

Having said all that, I think possibly having moderation on stories so that dupes can be quietly dropped from the front page if an overriding number of moderators select it.

its not that easy to coordinte 100 users, but I see your point.
5000 songs is already lots, but certainly doesnt mean that everyone is capable of downloading hundreds of thousands of songs.

  8. "For free" ? on Napster Has Been Cracked · · Score: 1

Ok, you can sign up for a 2 week trial.

You can download music continuously for the entire 2 week period and convert directly to wav.

There are 1,209,600 seconds in a 2 week period.
Assuming roughly 4 minutes per track, gives 5040 maximum songs per free account per fortnight.

During that time, you cannot listen to any other music, or play games (sound card needed for most..) or reboot.

Having a faster broadband connection won't help you, because the songs have to be played at normal speed.

How exactly does this add up to hundreds of thousands of songs for free?

Is this the same as the MPAA/RIAA saying because your a wicked filesharer, you uploaded a song thousands of times?

its buncum, and the people who will go to this much trouble would be better recording the radio.

I think the problem is the same as me saying:

Its not an issue for the buyer or the seller, it doesn't really impact on slashdot.

However, the minute the other readers find out they will kick up a hell of a stink and the account would be trolled and the $100 would be wasted.
