    I think you would have a hard time running Minesweeper on LongHorn with "only" 30,580 cpus!

    Dont even consider doing 3d work until you get over 65535 processors.

    There are two prominent applications for these machines.

    Wrong! There is a third, more used application: Solitare.

    Even super computer coders have to wait for results.

    I also asked this recently, but didn't get a reasonable answer, do these beasts have screen savers? if so, Are they just blackout type, or busy 3d rendered whizbang super cool ones "Just because we can"?

    (I realise you may not be able to answer that, but someone might)

    If intel discovered a full warehouse and decided to release the mega stock of pIIs and motherboards at absolute bargain basement prices, would they be considered new?

    (I would stand in line for a few of them, I'd be the guy stood behind NASA)

    I doubt you could do it for $100 based on the figures you've given.
    Your system would have no memory to operate from, and no way (other than net boot) to install/run software from. It would need a cd drive at least.

    I have seen Winxp running on a 400mhz machine, and have no doubts that a 600-800mhz celeron or duron based system would be reasonable.
    The only problems come (as we are all discussing here) with sourcing the parts.

    In light of Balmeys $100 pc rant, I wonder if Intel are going to "announce" a cheap low spec mobo/cpu combo based on legacy p2/p3 tech soon.

    I've been on the web long enough to not blindly accept things.

    Many people have links to websites of countries they dont live in. If I took everything at face value, Christmas Island would be overrun by teenage pranksters.

    Anyway, your previous post mentions a 39 deg heatwave, I don't think england has ever been that warm in Autumn (Ever?)

    Issue:
    You put a tick in "Never remind me again".

    Identification:
    Woman v1.0 going haywire, throwing your clothes in the street, changing the locks.
    There are reports of possible security problems if your Woman 1.0 has local network access with other Woman devices. Though this problem may infact be a fundimental flaw.

    Resolution:
    To rectify this issue, you must perform the following steps*:
    1) Disconnect all other Woman devices and concentrate 100% on your errant model.
    2) Install Flowers v1.2.
    3) Distract your Woman with numerous retail items, this will disorient her and give you a chance to reflash her firmware.

    *Please note, these steps are discussed in chapter one of the "Never piss off your woman" handbook you recieved with the unit.

    Almost, its not quarter vga, the article says it is from a "half-vga" display:

    By composing a new pixel with the sub-pixel on the adjacent scanning line, 480*640 VGA resolution can be attained from a 240*640 half-VGA panel.

    Perhaps its nothing more than people realising their computers are being "monitored" as part of this study and deleting the stuff they got on their machines so that they dont get sued.

    Since telescopes are built on remote hilltops as far away from human activity (light and vibration polution), it makes sense to put them on remote volcanic islands.

    It also means that those living on the islands also have a better view of the cosmos. Also on the islands, people can study astronomy all year round, in other places, you usually have to go on a specially arranged visit, they can just look out of their window.

    Thats just common sense. Its like saying the best igloo building university is in Alaska.

    The FPS version of Gigli was offered and rejected by every major p2p outlet known.

    Even the eastern countries, normally piracy rife have declined to install a single copy.

    Hundres of p2p users have been sent threatening letter from the GIAA(gaming industry...) warning them that they MUST begin sharing this file or severe penalties would be levied.

    Several have settled out of court for thousands of dollars, whilst hundreds of other cases are pending. Industry watchdogs are dismayed, and the EFF are up in arms.

    Crude joke maybe, but certainly not a troll.

    Imagine an insect sized bug wandering around grooming, shaving stubble, removing dead skin, cleansing your pores all like a roomba.

    Going to sleep stubbly and waking up with clean unclogged hair and a smooth chin. Or just let it work whilst your watching tv or sitting in your cube.

    Simple AI would allow it to tell the difference between stubble and long specific hair thats meant to exist, heck it could even do as the parent suggests and trim your pubes.

    It could even scan for other skin related problems whilst its there.

    For everyone yicked out by the thought of this, remember the world is full of symbiotic creatures, whales and sharks have cleaner fish which do a similar job, whilst I would also get the eeby-geebies about having insects crawling on me, I don't seem to have a problem with letting a robot do the job.

    If I ever need an amputation operation, you have convinced me to get a perminent marker and indicate which body parts are off limits.

    I have made an equivilent (though obviously not as life effecting) action, I'm sure others have:

    Dragged box out of corner, popped the lid off, wrestled with the stupid drivecage, disconnected and unplugged the faulty hard drive, inserted new one, wired up, more wrestling, put lid back on, bootup.
    SHIT! Wont boot!
    Turns out I had swapped out the working primary drive instead of the broken slave.
    My problem was easily curable, but I can imagine very similar events occuring with doctors.

    (As a side note, since my "problem", every drive inside my box is very clearly marked with its role and usual drive letter(s) clearly displayed)

    If you have everything prepared, then you get the supercomputer at the end to do your rendering, and in that way, it is cheap.

    Its just idle time.

    Do you have your software written to actually run on it correctly?
    Do the people who analyse the results work for peanuts?
    Have you tested it?
    "Just one more revision" is another 10k.

    Imagine, you get some time on a supercomputer donated to you.

    You sit yourself down at the console, what do you do?

    Well, after writing the obvious pi to 1e999 dp, or for a=0 to 1000000000000000000000 do print "whoa!"

    How would you use your time?

    do they run a terminal environment - the worlds fastest computer interactively scrolling messages to 100s of users, and only throttling up when someone stops playing and gets on with some serious work?

    I also wonder, do SuperComputers run screensavers?

    SSN is already a UID used to key all sorts of databases. Its perfect for the task.

    Why should they fudge and create something that will likely break everything for no benefit.

    Even with another random UID, all the tables are still linked together, and all the information was still available.

    The solution should be secure access to secured data. Nothing else will do.

    Restrict the quantity/speed of queries to validated verified people.

    The problem here is insecure db systems. If the doors to fort knox are left open, then they will be robbed.
