    How much do you think it costs the company to have a developer stop what he's working on and make a CD for someone that requests the code? Probably more than $50.

    This is starting to get as funny as "This is the year of Linux on the desktop," but while we get those articles once a year, we get Sun-is-dying articles on a monthly basis. It isn't going to happen anytime in the near future guys, no matter how many times you write articles that lack any supporting information in the hopes of someone viewing your BusinessWeek site.

    If my cable goes out, so does half the town, and it gets fixed immediately. I'd also rather not have some asswipe kid down the street sucking up all of my upload bandwidth with his piracy, unless you're suggesting fractioning off a T1's bandwidth to each customer, which makes the situation even WORSE.

    Why would you want to distribute a T1 circuit to multiple end users? Cable is 3Mbps/256Kbps to each user, given a large enough pipe feeding it all, and is extremely cheap.

    If you are doing the later, I'm sure that someone higher up would love to know about this. Either they would like to give you more work or they don't need you at all.

    Well, I'd be happy to turn myself in, but I was invited along by the CIO, and my boss was among the managers on the latest trip out, so it might not have much effect. Apparently some companies recognize excellent work and treat employees well to keep them happy.

    Because it enforces equal work for equal pay.

    This coming from someone posting to Slashdot from work. The irony is killing me.

    Salaried, nonexempt employees are not paid for their hours, they're paid to get a job done, regardless of the time it takes. That can mean working extra hours in the crunch time, or taking off a couple hours early on Friday to play golf. Do these people really WANT to be hourly employees? I sure as hell don't.

    That's not shady. They're not even working around a law, they're doing something that's expressly legal.

    Personally, I don't see the point for these laws. I live in a state that either has a no-expiration law or extends the expiration to something ridiculous like 7 years (I can't remember which), but I can't remember the last time I kept a gift card for more than a month or two. Are people really burying these things? A year is still a lot more generous than the 60- or 90-day expiration on a personal check (not a comparable analogy, I know).

    This year computing services is taking a more proactive approach to network security: it is requiring all Windows-based computers to install software which will allow the school to automatically update virus software, apply windows patches, install software 'deemed necessary' for network security, and 'report on the status of your computer'.

    Will the college be taking responsibility for data lost when a Microsoft patch installed a system that's less than generic is rendered unbootable? That seems to happen on at least 1 out of every 20 systems EVERY time there's a security update, in my experience.

    Has anyone been able to find the Mega Man Anniversary Collection? Apparently it's been severely backordered. It was supposed to be released two days ago, and I stopped by four stores today (Best Buy, two EB Games, and a Walmart) and only a single one had the Gamecube release, and none had the PS2 release. I'd really like to get my good retro gaming fix.

    This has nothing to do with guts and everything to do with culture. The fact is, releasing this in Japan wasn't taking a risk, just like releasing graphic violence-based games like Grand Theft Auto in the US isn't a risk. It's GOING to do well.

    Funny, I live in Eastern MA (and a WPI grad), and I was getting $0.08 with MassElectric (ugh), and recently moved to a town with its own municipal, non-profit electric company, and it's even less. ;)

    It's definitely a matter of personal preference. To me, the default Linux build of FireFox looks "right," whereas in Mozilla, the default font settings leave too many pages illegible, but increasing the fonts leave others looking like I should be wearing glasses with inch-thick lenses. It may have something to do with my choice of resolution and monitor, too.

    I'm currently stuck in that I'm still finding FireFox too buggy for everday use (broken -remote, crashing with some plugins, etc.), however I often find myself using it because GTK2 and XFT in the default Linux build is outweighing the ugliness of GTK1 and the non-XFT fonts in the latest Mozilla build. Will there ever be an official build of Mozilla 1.7+ with GTK2 and XFT? I've searched Google, and there were a few people building it regularly, but they seem to have discontinued doing so.

    Yes, it's broken and there's a bug open for it, you have to use mozilla-xremote-client for the time being. Unfortunately, the syntax is different enough between the two commands that it doesn't work so well with programs that foolishly hardcoded browser commands (like X-Chat), where symlinking mozilla -> firefox used to work.

    Be careful, not all sites correctly support pipelining, and will leave you stuck with a half-rendered page that never finishes. I've discovered this over and over with Mozilla in the past (perhaps I just look at really shitty sites), so I leave it off for compatability's sake now. Being correct is more important to me than being fast when it comes to software.

    Ummm, what blacklist are you referring to? All Comcast dynamic addresses are blacklisted in the MAPS DUL (theoretically, there's a few that aren't, as I just found out when moving from one area to another and having to start routing all my mail that was getting blocked by competent admins through Comcast's mail servers).

    Watch out, new with Mozilla 1.7RC3 (not in RC2) is a crash every time you close Mozilla after you've used the Helix-sponsored RealPlayer plugin. I've filled out a few Talkback forms now, hopefully that'll get cleaned up before the final.
