Ever heard of the GP2X? Runs on linux, designed to be easily developed for, plays MP3, OGG, WMA as well as several video formats. Has TV-out, USB and runs several emulators as well as homebrew and commercial games.
The existence of copyright isn't only exists as a service to the public! If it works against the common people it needs to be changed! They can't say, "Oh well, we'll LET you guys have more socially acceptable material if you let us make copyright even worse than it is." What bullshit!
How about "We the people will LET you keep any copyright so long as you quit peddling shit music!"
I create FX for films and sometimes do some print work. There is a HUGE difference between 16, 24 and 32 bit color. If I submit a shot to the colorist that has even a slight bit of banding, he's going to crank the color contrast and pull colors everywhere and that banding will become very noticable. If that happens the shot will need to be corrected and that can cost a lot of money. The end result: I get fired.
Wait until your parents or a friend of yours asks you to help them get their HD-DVD to play on their system. Most folks are going to be completely oblivious until after they've dropped a lot of money on stuff that just won't work. At that point they've already invested a lot and will probably just take it up the ass and buy some more so the stuff they already purchased will be of some use.
I'm sure we could invest in something that would save far more lives with much less money. Like cancer or heart disease research. Or maybe more flexible building materials.
Oh wait... that doesn't mean $$$ for military corporations.
Over the years I've moved several hundred gigs via BitTorrent without violating any laws or infringing on anyone's copyright. Just because a download is large doesn't mean it's using a restrictive copyright.
You should only have to upgrade your optical drive to view HD content. If you're running Vista, however, your older monitor that is missing the HDCP (that has absolutely NOTHING to do with quality) will have to be replaced despite it's full ability to display HD content. THAT is the concern. Not that you'll have to upgrade the whole laptop.
A lot of folks like being able to upgrade only what's needed on their system. Vista is just making it so you'll need to upgrade stuff for the sake of getting their DRM shit working. Even if your system is already capable of doing all the whiz-bang stuff.
Fuck it. I've been using Win2k/Ubuntu and have yet to have a reason to install XP. I doubt I'll feel the need to move to Vista. I'll just drop Win2k when things stop supporting it. Why should I drop $200 for something that'll require me to drop another $1000 for no new functionality?
You're assuming everything in the universe started evolving at the same time. It is possible it is us catching up to another life form's abilities. I'm not saying there is advanced life on Mars, but the universe is big. Like really, really big. The possibilities are pretty big too.
As is stated in the article "Picking a slower graphics card for a media centre PC offers more advantages than just the price; the X1300 and X1600 some in a passively cooled variety, the X1800 and X1900 cards do not. This is the same for the nVidia 7300 and 7600, both are available as a fan less card."
Keep in mind video cards these days are designed to crunch huge texture maps with anisotrophic filtering and apply it to hundreds of thousands of anti-aliased polygons while calculating stencil shadows, vertex shaders, bump maps, specular passes, etc at well over 30 frames per second. High quality upsampling of DVD video is a piece of cake for these puppies.
Gee I didn't know you represented the needs of everyone. I had no idea Flash was completely useless as I've often enjoyed watching documentaries, news clips, home brew animations and interacting with stimulating websites that utilized Flash as a delivery medium.
I better uninstall that useless piece of junk right away!
Firstly, No military that kills people is going to let a license agreement get in their way if they really need the software.
Secondly, yeah, there will always be conflict, but if we spend all our time trying to kill the other guy instead of trying to co-exist we'd end up wiping ourselves out. Also keep in mind we are the other guy to a bunch of people we benefit from co-existing with. If China were to decide they'd be better off without us would you like them to try and stomp us out?
Lastly, as a vegan I don't see what's wrong with it. Sure, if it's between starvation and eating a dog, I'd eat a dog... hell I'd eat a person if I really needed it. But there's no reason I need to chomp down on Bambi's butt if I'm happy without it. In fact I feel better physically without it.
By your comment it seems you have a real problem with being nice. You should try it some time.
Firstly, the people who cut the drugs are not usually the cartels, but the dealers. The folks the cartels sell to know their drugs and won't tolerate cut drugs. The people on the street, however don't have many options. They either take the cut drugs or try and find another dealer that won't cut them as much.
Legalize and new companies will pop up everywhere to sell drugs. Customers will be able to sue for quality problems. Competition will drive price down (eliminating most drug related crime) and quality way, way up. The FDA could also get in on the fun.
I haven't looked into it, but I bet alchohol was often quite poor in quality during prohibition.
A) They didn't tell anyone the software would do this.
B) We are supposed to trust MS that this thing is only asking MS if it needs to be shut off? What the hell kind of reason is that to phone home?
C) Why the hell does this software need to be running all the time? It's taking resources doing nothing but asking MS if it should be shut off?! Why can't it be started up and shut off only when needed?
D) There have been false reports of pirated software. Will this software one day just decide you're using a pirated version and kill your machine? Some people depend on their computers to feed themselves. If this software screws up and kills a machine and the owner has several days of downtime who's going to compensate them?
E) If you really think MS (or any large corporation for that matter) is above abusing phone home programs you got blinders on. Why should we trust large companies with our private informaton while not trusting actual people with our social security number?
F) The reason megacorps and the people who run them are so successful is always a combination of luck, smarts, and ability to stab people in the back and laugh about it. I'm not saying large corporations should be ended, but they should be approached with caution. They will try to get away with whatever the hell they can. It's the consumer's job to keep them in check... Well it's the goverment's job too, but they seem to be doing a shit job to say the least.
Police capture innocent people all the time. That's why they aren't judges or juries. In fact the police have extremely limited legal power. It's the courts that will decide if the Swedish lawmakers are siding with them or not.
Seeing as the Pirate Bay fellows looked pretty damned hard at the law, I doubt they'd be dumb enough to actually have any infringing material on their servers.
Either way it was intended to promote innovation, not stifle it.
I really don't see how having a hierarchial menu could easily be avoided. Hierarchies have probably been the most common organizational structure for centuries. To patent it on portable audio devices sounds about as sensical as patenting plugging headphones into portable mp3 players.
There should be a "No shit, dingbat." clause in the patent requirements.
What's really sad is the unwashed masses don't realize their little Norton programs don't protect them from crap! They aren't the least bit cautious of opening that unexpected zip archive their friend sent them.
Whenever a friend/family member asks me to get rid of a virus I uninstal Norton before even trying to get rid of the virus and install AVG Free.
Well I'm sure a lot of CS degree holders in here would like to be able to get work in the US. Not to have to move to China or India to get a tech job.
Exporting jobs is just plain bad for any economy. It reduces jobs and increases the money flow out of the country. The US is experiencing some serious economic draining ATM.
Linux doesn't really have this economic effect attached to it. Even if you buy a distro, you can buy the distro(s) made in your country.
I may be remembering incorrectly, but didn't most CD-ROM drives come with a couple carriages and you had to put your CD-ROMs into the carriage? Sounds like you're angry at the drive makers for dropping what I thought was a needless step.
I dunno... I use CDs and DVDs very frequently to deliver work to customers. I like being able to keep 100 CDs on a spool instead of keeping a huge rack of them. I also imagine buying a CD carriage along with your media would raise prices too. It all depends on what your needs are.
I also have music CDs that are about 10 years old that still play. So long as you don't toss them around they usually stick around. Just leave them in a case until you need them... then put them right back in the case when you're done. Hold them on the sides to avoid mucking up the bottom. When taking them out of the case press down on the middle piece to avoid bending the disc.
If a disc is too scratched and you don't have a backup (backup your discs when you first obtain them) you can repair them with a repair kit. My DVD rental store does this all the time with good results.
I do agree the option to keep discs in a carriage would be nice, though.
One thing you miss in your post is the cost associated with defending yourself against a giant company. Sure if you win you'll probably get your costs back, but high payed lawyers such as FedEx could afford would probably be able to keep a case going for a few years... Reguardless of how ridiculous the accusations.
Apple's next generation of its Mini line will probably be based on the Pentium M processor which runs cooler and more efficiently than any comparable processor.
Keep in mind G5s run really, really hot... I work with a dual G5 daily and the room get nice and toasty if I leave the door closed. That's why there's no G5 Mini or powerbooks. Strange as it may sound, Intel has a better low power chip than IBM or AMD... despite the P4 being a burning heap of inefficient madness.

I'm thinking about getting one.

So yes, it is important.

Since when is BitTorrent Illegal?

Though I must agree we are quite boring.

I think (s)he meant so you can boot up your linux CD and diagnose/fix problems with windows.
It's a handy thing to have when Windows refuses to boot even into safe mode.
Wow! I never thought of such an application.
I'd really like to read up on some of these projects. Do you have any articles or links with more information?
So they want to benefit from all the work done for OSS projects without contributing any work back?
Am I missing something?

What really gets me is how rarely the methods these vulnerabilities use are used for useful purposes.
In most cases rich text or even plain text documents are more than adequate. Do memos and resumes really need to have executing code in them?
Either way it was intended to promote innovation, not stifle it.

End user loyalty isn't charity at all. It's a long term profit tactic.
