I use Macs but the OP is making a valid post. OSX aside, in terms of hardware you pay much more for less when you get a Mac. No eSATA and no USB3? For the premium you pay for a Mac those should be expected. Sure, Thunderbolt can replace those technologies, but it will be years until TB becomes a ubiquitous connection so until then you will be stuck with slow USB2, unless you want to buy overpriced Apple peripherals from the Apple store.

I'm simply getting sick of paying the 40% mac-tax on slightly-better-than-average hardware just for the privilege of using OSX.

Europe and Asia continue to enjoy 20,50, 100Mbps or higher speeds. Bell explains they can't offer those speeds because of Canada's low population density, even in large urban areas like Toronto or Vancouver.

-Cereal that are advertised as 'Natural', which can mean anything.

    1) Add Skype's technology into their products, stick a "Powered by Skype" sticker on the box, and kill off any consumer-level access Skype as we enjoy it now. Looking back at Cisco's purchases in the last decade and you'll see this is very likely.

  14. Re:The "Support" in Tech Support on The Future of Tech Support · · Score: 4, Insightful

The "Support" in Tech Support began to die out in the mid to late 90's when company's bean counters realized that providing in-house phone support was more expensive than outsourcing it to call centers. Instead of having people who specialized in the company's products taking calls, the same person who answered calls for a farm machinery company, hardware store chain, and five different ISPs during his shift would now take your support call for your fancy state of the art 19" flatscreen CRT monitor(hey, it's the 90's remember?).

Very soon after that the call-center bean-counters decided that calls don't need to be answered as soon as it come in, for a caller will accept sitting in a queue for a short period of time. Thus the call center would need a few less ppl to answer the phones during each shift for as soon as the employee finished a call he can immediately pick up the next one.

Finally they imposed 5-minute talk times, 90 seconds for post-call wrap up, and instituted bonuses for the people who took the most calls per day, had the lowest talk-times, fewest call-backs, whereas the few remaining employees who still cared about 'customer care' or 'customer support' soon abandoned that industry.

Does Bell get all the money you would pay for an account from a reseller? NO! So I would think that everyone that hates Bell or Rogers would be more than happy to drop them and switch to an ISP where a good chunk of your monthly bill goes into non-big-business pockets. But alas, it's always easier to sit, do nothing, and complain instead of taking action.

I live in a city with a population of less than 1M and we have at least half a dozen choices for DSL. If you don't want to switch from crappy rogers, or from bell to a reseller where only a portion goes to Bell instead of everything then that's your choice, not Rogers', not Bell's, so shut up and deal with your decision, or lack of.

There are some areas where Bell or Rogers are the only choice for hi-speed; if you are in that situation then I feel your pain and your complaints are then justified.
