Your right about the huge mess of applications but I disagree that it is because Windows isn't just a kernel. For example, look at OS X. It is built on a kernel, but the slew of applications that Apple makes for it are not always perfect. It definately has less problems than Windows. Which leads me to conclude that the problems are the design of Windows, rather than its intergration of parts, or a little of both.
The way things are going, I see Windows as an operating system that is trying to build a house from the top down, and inside out. While it can be done, many things will be compromised in the process.
I recently bought a enclosure and threw my own hard drive in it. The enclosure was only $30, made for 2.5" hard drives, has Firewire, and USB2, and works with Windows/Linux/OSX. The drive I purchased was a 80 gig from Fujitsu from Newegg.com for about $160. Buying your own enclosure gives you the option for what size you want, and how much you want to spend.
I think that many people are interested in computers as a degree. They want to learn how to program, or how to network. When they get into CS program, it isn't quite what they are looking for. Computer Science isn't about programming, or how to get computers to network, it is about learning how they work, and how to make them work better, the theories, and philosophies of controlling those bits.
At Purdue, there have been many people that don't understand what they get into. Each semister, you notice someone else drops out of the program.
The things that you have listed there are things YOU look into for an media player, not every wants the same things. Most people are very satisified with their iPod. The easy of us, makes it confortable enough to forget about multiple formats, mp3s and ACC compression sounds great.
If the iPod wasn't what people were looking for people wouldn't buy it. Real wants a peice of the market, and is going the wrong way about it. There are plent of other media players, but Apple has proven that the iPod is the sexiest, easiest to use media player around. If YOU don't like it, use your money and show Apple what you do want.
Even though this site doesn't use XHTML 2.0, it does show the importance, and the amazing things that can be done when content and presentation have properly been seperated. CSS Zen Garden... if you haven't seen it, check it out!!
PEAR has done a great job in keeping many different packages updated for PHP developers. Their Database Abstration Layer provides great multply database support while still including features a good database needs.
It will take a little bit of porting if you have any Windows.Forms or any windows32 API calls (hah). Most of the Windows.Forms stuff is currently handled under Wine with Mono. Changing that stuff over to GTK# wouldn't be too bad, plus they would be able to use the application on Linux, and OS X.
I would like to congradulate the Mono developers on a job well done. Programming languages are finally becoming a little more senesible!
For all you complaining about how much time it takes to compile such apps, there is a plus side! I installed Gentoo on my p3-500, with 512mb of ram. KDE runs just as fast as it does on my p3-500 as it does on my desktop amd barton 2500+.... AND it is 3 times as fast handling Apache/MySQL server than my 1.2 Ghz Pentium on Win2k (yeah yeah).
After the initial compile, everything after that is pretty much cake. Emerge is the greatest thing ever.
If SCO really beleives that the GPL is against the consitution, what makes you think they are gonna let NMap tell them what they can redistribute?
This puts SCO in a bad position:
1. If they agree with NMap on the terms, then they have agreed to the GPL license, thus contradicting themselfs.
2. Still insist the GPL is against the consitution, and still distribute NMap. This opens them up to other cases in which they might be suied over the GPL, thus costing them more money.
Y Windows System is looking to replace X windows system because:
X is too slow
X places to much burden on the programmer (XLib)
X has no standard
Xfree86 is over 10 years old
This is all taken from the PDF file.
I for one, am all for standardizing a window system. That's not saying that we can't have competiting Window managers, but there is standard of the communication to the windows system. This is (IMO) what is holding back Linux from the desktop.
I totally agree. It wasn't too long ago that an article on A List Apart that described what Slashdot could to redesign it with web standards Not only would it make Slashdot comply with web standards, it would save them 3-14gb of bandwidth a day!

I have to somewhat agree with you.

Funny, I thought that Pixar seperated from Disney?
Nope, pretty sure it is Hafta.
Castodian dick.
I still am amazed how many people still use the HP calulators with reverse polish notation. Many of them wouldn't trade it for the world =D
A9 is not live. Amazon still has it in beta. Hence the words, BETA next to A9 on its home page.
I dont know what is worse:

Try SCO, they set up a PayPal link so you can donate in $699 increments!
I liked this one too:
::GIRLS = EVIL
Girls are a product of money and time:
GIRLS = MONEY x TIME
Since time is money:
MONEY = TIME
Then:
GIRLS = MONEY^2
Since money is the root of all evil:
MONEY = sqrt(evil)
GIRLS = (sqrt(evil))^2
The mathematical proof girls are evil!
Wanted Dead or Alive.
I never knew what a Lagrange point was. I found that Wikipedia gave the best explanation.
Lagrange Point
That asks "is $TECHNOLOGY dead?" is FUD.
No, this is not FUD. This is understanding why technology that has been in the cuture for over 30 years is not being used as much.
If this article was to spread FUD, it would have included SCO.
Go back to your cave troll!
Interesting!
Play with numbers:
Sprints info on TAT-14
As stated, the TAT-14 is 16 pairs of STM-64 fiber. With a help from google, the average cost was $6000/km per cable.
6000 * 16 = $960,000/km For All 16 pairs.
The total length of the cable is around 15,000km long.
$960,000 * 15,000 = $1,440,000,000
The cost of a transatlantic link cost almost 1 and a half billion dollars that is capable of 640Gbits throughput!
The screenshots of the latest build of Longhorn can be found here.
Enjoy!
Yeah, cause losing credit points is much worse than losing thousands of dollars and going bankrupt! :D
