I think you went about things the wrong way. Why would you ever look at the nitty gritty syntax rules first when trying to learn a language. First do some simple examples to get the general feel of the langauage. Then learn the nitty gritty stuff as required.

"IMO, "the right job" for perl is about 2% of all programming tasks out there."

76 percent of all statistics..... You get the point. You really dont have any valid point here, every language is designed to do certain things, and people will use it for those things and more. Trying to say whats the best langague out there is stupid. Trying to say what percent of projects perl should be used on is also stupid.

"It can accomplish this, but not without the reader having to go through the mental gyrations of what could be best called linguistic decompression."

Have you tried to program in a logical language lately? Have you tried to program in a functional language lately? Have you tried to program in anything but your standard imperical/oo language lately? There are tons of styles of languages, and each one required its own linguistic decompression. Which one feels more natural its a matter of opinion.

If you read the grandparents comment he is talking about the interface(crappy bubble style control panel etc, that may or may not be present) and the funky dissapearing icons in the start menu. All of which makes it harder to help people with windows problems.

None of this has to do with "fucking up your configuration" or "figuring out how to run windows without it crashing on you". It has to do with useability and quality of software. Further more how do you figure the grandparent is a "Linux-loving Slashdotter", he/she seems to be quite familiar with windows and its operation, also his/her whole family uses it.

Bottom line whoever modded this up is on crack.

I read that whole article, that was possibly the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

ask what would happen to the wealth of the nation if, say, a gifted neurosurgeon liquidated his physical assets--his scalpels, his diagnostic machines, his examining rooms--and gave the resulting monies to the Sierra Club or to United Nations agencies.

Administrators at these agencies would be better off, but society would be poorer because this gifted neurosurgeon stripped himself of the tools he needs to do for others what he is proven to do best.

This example is stupid. There is a difference between donating wealth that you have accumulated and donating the tools/resources you need to do your job.

Im pretty sure in Bills case he has a hefty amount of personal wealth.

Somehow I have a feeling that if Bill Gates donated a load of money it would not reduce microsofts ability to produce and market software. Im not saying that he should donate 30 billion like the article says, but 20 million really is a drop in the bucket.
