I can see it now, a nuclear submarine made of this stuff. See the pretty whales getting confused and beaching themselves, see the big sharks bonk their heads on the stuff as they try to eat the crew, see the pretty canisters floating down towards you and then exploding. Hey, is that Hoffa!?!?
As soon as you pressed submit, google cached your entry, did a lookup to find your personal information across billions and billions of web-pages, then sued itself to not show anyone your relevant info.
I could not understand how a professor of Computer Science could actually use Windows.
Maybe because when they got their computer it had windows pre-installed and it was a good enough of an environment to get out of the way and allow them to do what needs to be done.
Not everyone, not even professors, have a torch to burn. They just want to pursue whatever floats their boat(s).
Now me, I can barely understand the professors I have this semester, and one of them is using the book's publisher's power point slides to teach, and the other is ignoring the book completely and just lecturing (why the HELL did he force us to purchase a $100+ book?!). Feels like I'm in a seminar instead of a university computer science course.
Everyone's said my directions suck. I kept telling them, "It's a huge spiral, you can't miss it!", and they keep calling me a useless monkey-boy who couldn't navigate my way into a black hole.
Completely off topic, I know, but do you know a good resource on how to use the TIGER/Line data for generating maps in (almost) real time using streaming GPS data?
I've been trying for awhile to find good tutorials on the subject, but so far no joy.
Because if you want to run any older mac software you will have to emulate a PPC on an Intel chip. Which will be too slow for many mac style programs. Sure it will run Word or excel just fine but note Mathematica or Photoshop.
Actually, in the keynote Jobs ran PPC version of Photoshop using Rosetta (that the right name for the JIT emulator?). It seemed pretty darn quick to me.
For instance, on some sites that I've developed, whenever an admin page is used to add to menus, it *does* update the DB, but it also recreates a static.php file that has the menus as.php code, and that file is included whenever the menu is used. No database access for pages that need the menus, no restarts necessary whenever the semi-static data is modified. Pretty much a win-win for all involved.

That's complete BS, 'Coward. Perhaps if Moz/FireFox were relegated to the geek fringe, your attitude would be applauded; however, a New York Times advert necessitates you do simple things, like, I dunno, NOT ERASING SOMEONE'S NON-MOZILLA-RELATED DATA.
It's a simple thing really, and one lots and lots of other install builders have gotten right.
So far, all of my comp sci courses have required that your code compile and run on a *nix--your source has to be available on your class account on a *nix box in order to be "accepted".
Speaking of PEAR, would you know of a good site that delves into PEAR usage? I haven't found anything significant yet, so haven't made the leap into using it.
I recently submitted a complaint about unrequested emails being received, and the sender refusing to stop sending. Got back a nice form letter stating spams a problem, they recommend I delete the spam and simply ignore the problem. My tax dollars hard at work.
Sorry, but that's not an apples-to-apples comparison. When the kernel and Free software in general starts preventing infectious disease, miserable lives, and early death, THEN you'd have an argument.
$750M saving lives > $750M Free software (by a couple of orders of magnitude, I'd imagine).
You end up using all the proprietary applications, and freedom will vanish.
Ok, people fall into at least 1 of 2 camps.
1. Zealot: use Free software no matter how painful.
2. "Normal": use whatever software does the best job, is easiest to use, etc.
Now, I have no problem with (1), as long as they realize that (2) will use Free software if it does the best job. This is just how it should be (obviously, I'm in the (2) crowd).
See, that's true freedom: the ability to thoughtfully choose the application that does exactly what you want it to do, not what a particular developer wants it to do.
As far as Linux adoption goes, it'll be adopted if there's a good fit, good developer tools, and good applications, regardless of there being Free/free applications available.
Sometimes it's hard to step back and realize a Computer and its OS/Application Suite is intended to actually let people be productive, and not exist simply for existance sake.
Whoever modded the parent as troll really is an idiot, or, perhaps, doesn't know what "Troll" means (of course, the two aren't mutually exclusive).

I need a new cat.
Mine just pissed on the keyboard and used his back claws to pop the keys off as he tried to cover up his mess. The hairball in my USB ports was a nice touch, I must admit.
No, because the tornado would suck it straight back into space.

I don't know what's gotten into me...
Well, with Vista Pr0n edition, we'll all find out.

Wow, thanks for the link, spectre. Looks like I've found a new place to hang my hat!
2. Save button on toolbars.
So what should it look like, hmm? Surely not the anachronistic 3.5" disk long banished from the platform.
I dunno, maybe a Holy Cross, Star of David, what-have-you... User selectable, of course.
Hopefully it won't take back the sex already had...
That could be a bit messy and uncomfortable for all parties involved...

May 7, 1995... ok, maybe not, but that'd be pretty neat :)

Its really hard to convince americans (even computer science students) to even look at linux.
At my school, *nix is required. Your apps must compile and run as expected on school hardware, which runs some varient of *nix.
To the Universities who force students to use Windows exclusively: You're doing your students a horrible disservice. Stop it. Thanks.
