  1. Re:Throwing out computers?? on Dell Offers Curbside Computer Recycling · · Score: 1

It is criminal of Dell to be so late to the recycling program for individual customers because it has already had a recycling program for Dell said that since it began recycling computers for corporate customers in 1991, it has collected 2 million computers. . 2 million computers is not a whole lot for Dell which has sold more than 20 million computers. Better late than never. 15 $ is not a whole lot compared to the 50 $ HP is offering for recycling.

I have washed my hands of desktops(I have one now but this is my last desktop) and will only go in for laptops now even though they are costlier. CRT monitors might be cheaper than LCD ones but they contain a lot more toxic waste and are harder to dispose than LCD's. Hopefully within the next 4-5 years LCD's will come to dominate the display market. Giving to charities is a good idea, keeping them working in the basement is not. It is more of a hassle to provide the network connections down there and what not.

They should have two categories for songs. 1)Songs should be automatically priced according to the number of times they have been downloaded. Even if its a hit song..the more people download it, the better it is for apple. Therefore the cost of the song goes down as time passes until its ready to pass into the second category.

    2) The second category is those songs that are not so popular, or old songs that not many people will be willing to download. Category 1 should be priced .75 $ and category 2 should be priced .40 $. If it were the above, I would say many people would give it a try and then decide if it works out for them.

If you have overdrawn your account, you are sent a mail(snail) or the bank gives you a call to collect the money. The time limit in which you withdraw money without any problem is 3 days to 15 days.

That is why some banks here give credit/debit cards only to customers who have had a 100 $ minimum balance over a period of 2 years.

Forget Moore's Law or rather Dumb rule of thumb.

While processor speed has grown fast during the past 6 years, memory speed(bus speed) has grown much slower. Infact, only now is it being pursued seriously.

Once my computer guy told me that having a 400 Mhz computer and PC100 RAM would transfer data only as fast as the PC100 could process it and transfer it. When you build a system and test it with PC2100 DDR and then PC3200 DDR, the difference is much pronounced.

Hector Ruiz is trying to shift attention from Moore's law because in a few years, to get a substantial increase in processor speed, you will need a lot more money than needed today and heat is also a major factor.

You are already seeing a shift in Intel(the proponent of Moore's law) to lesser heat producing processors even while giving better performance than the P-4's. AMD while increasing its processor performance wants data to travel faster so that memory bottlenecks are removed(hence hypertransport consortium).

The performance spotlight is shifting to the memory market because the cost of making data travel faster and thereby increasing overall computer speed is less than increasing processor speed to achieve the same bump in computer performance.

  20. only the bottom has heat shield, not the top on Space Shuttle Columbia Breaks Up Over Texas · · Score: 1

The bottom of the shuttle has a heat shield. The crew have no control over what happens when re-enterting. Lets say something went wrong with the computers on board the shuttle or/and computers controlling the shuttle from the space centre. When the shuttle enters the atmosphere, the black shield is facing the brunt of re-entry therefore is the most heat-fortified part(other than the exhaust systems and nose) of the shuttle. If any of the computers fail to maintain the shuttle in the correct position, then the shuttle might have tilted or turned 180 degrees(there is a chance that the shuttle at this point will abruptly veer of course and its wings and tail will face extreme stresses) BUT stayed on course. Now with the heat shield below the shuttle no longer facing the brunt of the atmospheric entry, there is a chance that the ceramic tiles could not handle all the heat(many a time it has been reported that some of these ceramic tiles have been burnt and some(3-4) have fallen off) and this started the disintegration of the shuttle. This is a sad day for India and the rest of the world. God bless them.
