I argued the exact same line with my girlfriend when she wanted to pick up the FFX guide -- "Why? We have the internet."
She said it's just a better experience to have a book there beside her when she plays, where she can flip the pages. I can't argue, but I can definitely see that the days of A Link To The Past (where you needed the guide if you wanted to find every heart) are long past. Now, the guides are no longer necessary, they're just for convenience.
Just yesterday I was in our local FYE (a CD store that used to be Warehouse music). I noticed Counting Crows had a new one out and I picked it up. It's worth $15, I figure, because I always liked them and haven't heard from them in a while. I get to the checkout and it's priced at $19.99. I just laughed and told them to forget it.
This is why sales are down. I haven't downloaded the MP3s for it, and I don't intended to. It's because even normal people might let themselves go now and then and drop $14.99 on a CD. But, when you take something that everyone agrees is already overpriced and jack it up to $20?! Consumers don't liked to be assraped. It doesn't have anything to do with piracy.
Well, I can't read the article -- it's already slashdotted -- but it sounds like your complaints are similar to any mature gamers', regardless of sex.
Obnoxious 13 year olds annoy everyone. Most people don't buy games to get a date -- they hide their games to, in fact. The thought of marrying an IT professional is also not why I got a job in comp sci.
Really, the whole thing seems a little silly to me. My girlfriend plays Xenosaga and Virtua Fighter 4, neither of which are exactly pandering to women. If you make a quality game, people of both sexes will want to play it. I think the biggest thing stopping more women from considering playing games right now is the social stigma attached.
I really don't see the problem with that. Maybe it's just because I've been using C long enough that reading it is second nature, but I don't recall it ever being confusing to me.
If you were talking about int* a, b then you may have a point.
If that sort of thing is really a problem for you, you could use hungarian notation (or some variation on it). For me, it's more of a hassle for me than a help, though.
Whoever modded this up is abusing their points. Whether you agree with him or not about Bush's politics, you can take your pick between (a) troll, or (b) offtopic.
Notice how I didn't respond to the trolling part? Good. Now, you don't either.
You misunderstood me. I meant that I was thinking how cool FFVI would be on GBA when looking for it on PSX Anthology. When I saw FF3 in this article, I was hoping I got my wish, but I was wrong.
By the way, I would rather see FF6 ported to the GBA instead of FF3.
Amen! I was just saying this the other day when looking for FF:Anthologies. When I saw FF3, I was praying they meant 'American' FF3, which is really 6. Maybe someday...
Actually, the message has already been partially deciphered, but experts are unable to find a meaningful connection between the translated phrases, "hot grits," "natalie portman," and "petrified."
Our company does plenty of work with Unisys in the banking industry. They're once of the two leaders (along with NCR) in back-office check imaging and remittance solutions, both hardware and software. They won't be hurting for money. We're talking places where a single installation would easily break $1mil and the banks wouldn't bat an eyelash.
I'd pay for a Slashdot subscription if Slashdot switched to PNGs because then I'd see they were bandwidth/cost concious.
No, you wouldn't. If they did that, then you would find another idiotic reason to not support them. If you don't think Slashdot is bandwidth and cost conscious now, then you have no concept of reality. Please go away.
The other is viewing too many images in tabs - even if you close tabs after you've viewed the pics, and try not to keep more than a half-dozen open at once, eventually it will die
Another case of porn driving innovation. Come on, people, try to have some self-control! Was 5 naked people at once really not enough?
While this seems like a cool project, it is taking away developers who could be adding the same great features and abilities to our current systems.
I hate this type of arrogant mentality. The whole point of the open source community is that everyone should be able to work on whatever they want, NOT that everyone should be working on Linux.
Yeah, I know Linux and BSD are great and all, but who the hell are you to judge what these guys should or shouldn't be spending their time on? Maybe you've read too many articles about the RIAA/MPAA, "For every CD copied, we lose a sale," -- "For every developer working on non-Linux systems, we lose a Linux developer." I'm afraid it doesn't work like that.
I'm not going to bother arguing whether your assertation that they could use a Linux kernel is valid or not, because it's completely irrelevant. If the developers wanted to use Linux, they would. They chose not to. Do you imagine the thought just never crossed their mind?
We may all be a team in the sense that most open source developers have similar goals, but not in the sense that you can refer to "our current systems" in any meaningful context.
The question is to what extent it was "optimized." Nvidia also optimizes for Q3 and UT, so is it not valid to ask how these optimized performances compare to the optimized benchmark?
What if they optimized not just for Q3, but for Q3 Level 1 while you're using player model X on a sunny day with a BFG and 13 bots? Would you cry foul? Are they cheating to make Q3 run faster? Isn't that their job? Where is the line? And, if 90% of the best selling games today run at that same "optimized" speed, how good of a benchmark can it be if it isn't optimized? Isn't it then showing results that are artificially low?
If you want to use the video card to play optimized games, why would you care about the results of an unoptimized test?
The use of metal detectors and night goggles is still a fairly new practice, having been most recently used in early screenings of X-Men 2 in May and more recently at Down With Love, starring Renee Zellweger and Ewan McGregor.
Sources went on to say that unlike in X-Men 2, the night vision goggles in Down With Love were used to identify and apprehend those elusive moviegoes who attempted to escape early.
An 18 cent coin is a good idea, but it's only a start. What we really need is one coin per possible amount of change. That way, when you pay with $1.00 for a $0.63 candy bar, you just get one 37-cent coin in return.
This approach simplifies all transactions to one-coin change. Some people might argue that this is just too many coins to keep track of, but since no one keeps track of their change anyway, it wouldn't matter. It's easier to use the new change to pay as well: Instead of $0.67 being 2 quarters, a dime, a nickel, and 2 pennies, it can be paid in one coin. Or, you could use a 50-cent and a 17-cent piece. Or two 27s and a 13! The possibilities are endlessly easy!
Some people say that it's a problem to differentiate the 99 different coins (95 new coins) by sight. There's a simple answer to this -- each coin would have a number of sides based on its amount. A 4-cent coin is a square, an 8-cent is an octogon, and so forth. So, remember, don't give them three quarters -- just reach into your pocket, feel for the coin with 75 sides, and hand it over.
Oh, and if you can't tell a 99-sided coin from a 97-sided coin by sight, perhaps you should stick to smaller denominations.
The new two-cent coins are easy to lose, so be careful.
Look what I've been missing on CSPAN-2 all these years...
My fax paper is always being wasted by people who send me faxes I do not want. I do not know whether they could be called "corned beef" or something, but I have had enough of them.

int foo;
int *bar;
But I guess that's not right. What is it?
This is going to be the next "In Soviet Russia," isn't it?
Hey! Without my job at Netscape, I would never have the free time to post this comment!

... or post +4 funny comments on slashdot.

Anyone with excellent karma here had better include themselves in such statements ;)

Root for one well placed hand grenade during the proceedings.
You took the words out of my mouth... ;)

But, I remember reading that part and thinking, "What the hell? End the book! The story is OVER!"
I, for one, hope it gets left out of the movie.
