1) battery life - Enough people have been 'burned' by the poor preformance of the built-in battery. (My wife's 40Gb player only lasts 30 minutes before the battery is dead) That don't think that $100-$300 every couple of years is worth it.
2) market saturation - How many people who would like to have a portable music player, haven't heard of an ipod?
3) price/format/additional features - I recently bought an iRiver T30 (1GB) It can play.ogg (which I use for audiobooks) and a single AAA battery lasts 30+ hours. Many other 'new' MP3 players have built-in FM-tuners, FM-transmitters, etc. that are costly additions to an ipod.
4) no real reason to upgrade. The writing is on the wall for that popularity of hand-held video players, the video ipod is close, but the format (screen size/dimensions) of the PSP are damn near perfect. The first company to make an non-crippled divx/xvid/mpeg4/mp3 player will do good.
1) Use an external drive for transferring the data. 2) copy/move the data to your desired "media" directory that Myth uses for it's data store.
This is nothing more complicated then copy/paste. You should be able to have Myth rescan your collection so that it shows up on your menus. (or however else you organize your life)
I am not a demographic that these companies can target. The last game that I bought was Moo3. (yes I am still scarred from that) Before that: UT2004 (just to support the Linux playability.) and NeverWinterNights before that.
So in 13 years I have bought 3 games. I am not taking a stand against evil, just a business practice that I do not agree with. My entertainment budget is happily at the $50/month internet access.
Movies? no Eating out? not much TV? free over-the-air RF is fine for me.
What is/was wrong with Charging $50 for a game and let the community host their own servers? I still play Starseige Tribes, and I love it!
I use Linux. I have zero interest in the new games for Windows. Like I said, I am not a demographic that these companies can target. IMHO I do think my friends are wasting their money, they do not think it's a waste. For them; they are right. For me; I am right.
Between the free Linux games that come around, MAME, and my old collection of games; I am content.
While I congratulate the developers for creating a game that keeps money pouring in at a rate to make the oil companies proud; I am sad to see subscription based games survive.
Everquest (afaik) started the trend and now with WOW pullings in Millions of $ each month, I know that it won't go away. I watch my friends throw money at all these games, one in particular had active accounts in: City of Heroes, WOW, and Everquest all at the same time! He let me try his account (in an attempt to get me hooked) and while the game and MMORPG aspect was fun, I dind't think it was worth the monthly fees.
So now, I stick to classics and Mame. I will never pay a monthly fee for a game.
Step #1 eliminate ALL of the analogue equipment, there are hundreds of experts that can claim the same footage is real & fake. (UFO recordings anyone?) Step #2 Use digital equipment connected to a PC recording the feed in real-time. A Md5sum/hash will be your (CoverYourAss) proof that the video has not been faked.
Backups then become simple. Burn it to a DVD and it becomes portable.
My bank does this too, (I was away from my computer and needed to transfer some funds). I was a bit surprised to hear the voice prompts because I was familiar with the key-inputs. So after 3 attempts to get to "Bill Payments" and a couple of failed attempts to speak to an operator, I yelled into the phone "I WANT TO SPEAK TO A FUCKING HUMAN!"
The computer responded to my outburst with: "It sounds like you are very upset and would like to speak with someone. Please hold on while I transfer your call."
I had to laugh at that programmed response. I don't know what triggered it, if it was the swearing, the yelling, or the combination, but I did get a human within a few seconds of that.
This is incredible, all this time I thought I just had bad luck. I can't get 1 bar of signal strength on my cell phone, unless I prop the phone against my window and point it at the cell phone tower that I can see ~500' away.
And WiFi? No way! I have 3 access points (One in attic, one in basement, one on the same floor as the PC using it (10' away on the other side of a wall) and do you think I can get a reliable signal? Hell no, but if I am in my car I can pick it up 2 blocks away.
My wifes old 900MHz phone works fine, my new 5.8GHz phone? it'll only work if I stay in the same room as the base-station and the people can only hear me when I yell.
If I try using 802.11a, I get good results (despite my wifes phone and 2 microwave ovens in the house), my CRAP (Completly Ridiculous Assinine Pet) theory is that the lower frequency passes through the super-human drywall that my house is made of. But to compete with that theory I can't understand why a Nerf-ball is able to dent the wall.
"...the wraith more interesting..." The Wraith are worse then all the bad 50's-70's horror/sci-fi monsters combined. I can just hear the board-room discussion. Ok, we need some bad guys. "How about Vampires?"
"Idiot, vampires have been done to death! You are Fired!" "How about Space Vampires?!"
"Brilliant! you get a raise!"
I enjoy SG:A, and I love McKay. But I could not believe the depth of badness that the Wraith turned out to be.
Atlantis got me interested in SG1, so I shall be sad to see it go. I wish Claudia would be more of a bad-ass that we loved from Farscape then the Comic-relief she has become. Her character seems more fitting for a "SpaceBalls 3 - The Search for SpaceBalls 2" style project.
As we have see recently, and if history is a teacher we can count on the US Government to consider itself above the law. Do we really think that the Military will give a rats ass what us hippies think? GPL clause or not; they will use whatever the hell they want to.
I might have the Bohr:Rutherford version of the atom stuck in my head; but is there any kind of measurable force that opposes the 'flip' necessary in this experiment (like a gyroscopic effect)? Do all atoms have an "up" and "down" orientation?
Does the nucleus of the atom (protons, neutrons) spin in the same direction as the electrons (similar to our Sun & planets)?
How does the whole 'electron cloud' theory even make it possible to detect the spin? (I thought that these quantum measurments affected the reults just by trying to measure them?!)
Encryption on the partition. Every time I hear about this I get a bad feeling about the false sence of security that it must be providing. Does this actually protect any data?
Remote kernel exploit? no, that usually just gives you root privledges. hacked user account? no, if that user needed access to the data, then it is just as well not encrypted stolen HD? yes, but no good against stolen computer (and only good if the crooks cannot do the above two)
What provides better security, is a file-by-file level of encryption, but this is a major pain-in-the-but.
Pay us the money and respect that we deserve in our role. Stop treating us like criminals (use a security policy that makes sence, not the latest paranoia that the boss thought of.)
If I am respected and payed what on par with others in my industry, I won't have a need to "Sell Your Secrets!
I have 5 boxes of somewhat random configuration that I am looking to do the same thing as the OP. My goal for this cluster would be high-speed video processing (using tovid).
I used to have psycho-motor epilesy, caused by a brain tumor in the Right Temporal Lobe. I had an operation in 1990 to remove the tumor.
My warning signal to the start of a seizure was a very intense feeling of Deja Vu. My stomach would flutter & knot up, my mouth would salivate, and it had the same physical intensity of a sexual orgasam. This sensation would last perhaps half of a second, I would then have my seizure.
Since the operation I have not experienced any Deja Vu sensations.
I am 32 years old now. When I was a kid I had a several Hot Wheels cars, and a maybe a couple of cheap imitations. What annoyed the hell out of me at even a tender young age, was that not all of my cars would work with the tracks that I got. I was MOST annoyed that only 1-2 would work wiht the custom tracks that I put together from all the different tracks that I had.
How could I setup a decent testing methodology of speed/flight with only 1 car!! (yes, I was a geek even then)
So, I told my mother to stop buying them for me because it was a waste of money that if I couldn't use all of my cars on all of the tracks, I didn't want it.
I will give you an example of what I have found.
I was out buying a new office chair, and I saw a 'sale-bin' of 100 spindle DVDR's with a BIG price next to them that said: 100 pack Maxell DVDR $4.99 and in very tiny print under that on a different sign: $24.99 before rebates, $20.00 mail-in rebate.
The second sign was very hard to see and not obvious that it was with the DVD's for $4.99.
I brought my 4 spindles + chair to the register, the total cost was almost $100.00 MORE then it should have been. I mentioned that they used the wrong price for the DVD's, and they said, "No Sir, that is the correct price." I made a fuss, the manager came out, showed me the sign.
I told them what I thought of their false advertising tatics, and threatened to NOT buy the $400 chair, if I didn't get the disks for the Posted $4.99.
They didn't care,...blah blah...company policy...blah blah...
So, I left that store empty handed and have never returned.
My point; too many times they post the "After Rebate" price, over/above and bigger then the actual price. It is deceptive.
Too many online retailers are doing this too. Sony DVDRW-DL $25.00* you only see the Actual Price in the checkout.
The easy answer to that one is; some are some aren't.
Hiracers are your best bet for preformance on hills. Just take a few out of test-rides. I know the article you are talking about; it is generally considered that the magazine is biased towards bents, but is slowly warming up to them. (They don't want to offend the roadie membership.)
Call around to your local bike shops and test ride.
I am a bent (short for recumbent) rider. I ride a longbikes Slipstream. (IMHO the most comfortable long-distance touring bikes on the planet) I would like to clear up some possible misunderstandings that might exist.
Not all Bents are fast, just as all uprights are not fast. The speed you can get on a bent is largely dependant on your engine. After riding 100+km (62+miles) on a bent nothing hurts. Compare that to an upright. If you suffer from wrist, neck, bum, or genital pain after spending ANY amount of time on an upright, I strongly suggest you investigate recumbents. I strongly recommend browsing http://bentrideronline.com/ It is a goldmine of information.
If by that you mean: "pulling me over for speeding" then yes of course. If you mean: RIDE programs at various times of the year to find/catch drunk-drivers; I have never had to provide any ID. The stop usually goes something like this: Me:"Hello officer." Them:"Have you been drinking tonight?" Me: "No." Them:"Have a nice night." If you mean anything else; it has never happened to me.
This is a long-time debate that I have had; Who is better?
Mighty Mouse or Superman
Ofcourse it was only a one-sided debate, as I am an only child.
Here are my ideas why sales are slowing.
.ogg (which I use for audiobooks) and a single AAA battery lasts 30+ hours. Many other 'new' MP3 players have built-in FM-tuners, FM-transmitters, etc. that are costly additions to an ipod.

This is how I would do it.
1) Use an external drive for transferring the data.
2) copy/move the data to your desired "media" directory that Myth uses for it's data store.

As a matter of fact, I live very close to high-tension power lines.
