  1. Starter Computer on Gates Mocks MIT's $100 Laptop · · Score: 2, Insightful

Seeing that this computer is extremely more powerful than the first computers I ever used, and most of us for that matter. I don't see why this is useless at all. You have to start learning about computers somewhere, why not on a cheap easily accessible computer that doesn't require electricity! I think Bill Gates fears one thing, more open source programmers! This project is bound to make quite a few of those :).

This kind of response not surprising at all. The problem is there are many windows admins out there who *FEAR* linux. They don't understand computers at all. But they do know how to sell windows and how to reinstall it. Change the platform and they have no job. I have seen it time and time again. They will not accept that linux is easy cheap and extremely powerful only because it is a threat to them.

Using FREE software allows a company to hire programmers to modify that source code to better fit their business needs. The OS etc of a system should be free, having programs custom tailored to your business model should not. It's not that the OS and user environment aren't valued, it's that for the most part everyone needs the same thing, so why should everyone have to pay through the nose for it? And why should you not be able to modify it and use it the way you see fit? And beyond that, why should you have to re-create everything from the ground up each time you want to add something to an existing application? Share and Enjoy!

The Texas Duck Hunt A big city lawyer went duck hunting in rural Texas. He shot and dropped a bird, but it fell into a farmer's field on the other side of a fence. As the lawyer climbed over the fence, an elderly farmer drove up on his tractor and asked him what he was doing. The litigator responded, "I shot a duck and it fell in this field, and now I'm going to retrieve it." The old farmer replied, "This is my property, and you are not coming over here." The indignant lawyer said, "I am one of the best trial attorneys in the United States and, if you don't let me get that duck, I'll sue you and take everything you own. The old farmer smiled and said," Apparently, you don't know how we settle disputes in Texas. We settle small disagreements like this with the "Three Kick Rule." The lawyer asked, "What is the Three Kick Rule?" The Farmer replied, "Well, because the dispute occurs on my land, first I kick you three times and then you kick me three times and so on back and forth until someone gives up." The attorney quickly thought about the proposed contest and decided that he could easily take the old codger. He agreed to abide by the local custom. The old farmer slowly climbed down from the tractor and walked up to the attorney. His first kick planted the toe of his heavy steel toed work boot into the lawyer's groin and dropped him to his knees. His second kick to the midriff then made the lawyer loose his early morning breakfast. The lawyer was on all fours when the farmer's third kick to his rear end sent him face-first into a fresh cow pie. The lawyer summoned every bit of his will and managed to get to his feet. Wiping his face with the arm of his jacket, he said, "Okay, Now it's my turn." The old farmer smiled and said, "Naw, I give up. You can have the duck."

If this is the usual/expected kind of problems from this kind of technology then MS would have been prepared to fix these problems, right? Call 1-800-4my-xbox and see how long you have to wait on the phone! If these where expected problems wouldn't they be answering the phone a lot quicker? Well. I do not like the idea of rebooting etc. at all. Also the "auto-detecting" of hardware would be less than great. Having a game fit on a single CD/DVD wouldn't be the best either and there would be speed issues. However, maybe there is a hybrid choice. You'd still need to reboot and it would auto-detect your hardware in the sense that, it looks up your existing configuration and uses that as it's starting point. Using this method you could utilize all of the computers resources towards the game and nothing but, squeezing that much power out of the system..... Although, the gains would be minimal. Be neat to see a prototype though to actually measure what the gains could/would be.
