  1. So whats new? on How Vista Disappoints · · Score: 1

I don't see what everyone is getting their panties in a bunch. #1 its still BETA. #2 hmmm a sales\marketing person promising the world to a customer then going back to developement and finding out its going to either take way longer than expected or not be possible at all.. whats NEW with that? We have all seen that 1000000 times over. I am currently running vista beta. I kinda like it. There are some things I dont like but who knows if that will be the case a year from now when they release it.

I saw this on discovery channel years ago. They were showing actual footage of missles being "shot down". The film was in black and white if that tells you how old it was. I am assuming that with some advancements in tech that this is possible now. They were able to do it before but with very little accuracy and it still took a few minutes to heat up enough to blow.

exactly! I am what would be concidered a middle class working fella. Unfortunately I have to drive 45 miles each way to work. I cant move due to what I owe on my house and the fact that my area is decreasing in value. I mean it. I cannot sell my house at all. There are no IT jobs where I live. Therefor a long drive is my only option. I drive a 91 geo tracker. It still costs me $10 a DAY to get to work and back. $200 a month adds up. I cannot imagine doubling that. It would cripple what little money I have comming in anyway. The rich aholes that are willing to spend $60k on a giant SUV (I paid 67k for my house) can afford doubling gas prices. An IT guy who works in a small manufacturing facility in the middle of noware cannot. Unfortunately for us. Its the rich aholes that get to make the decisions on how much we are going to pay at the pump.

I was laid off over a year ago due to offshoring. I know what everyone goes through. I have no degree. I grew up on computers and taught myself everything I know. I had a hell of a time finding a new job due to market over saturation. I was told my many head hunters that employers will overlook my resume 10+ years of exp as an admin simply because they get so many applicants. I was told they sort through looking for people with degrees and then go from there. I know I know get a degree.. This was not a concern since I had a great job great pay at a great company.. HOW QUICKLY ALL THAT CHANGES. anyway back to my point. While looking for a new job I saw 100's of add of people wanting 10 years of exp as a win2k server admin. 10 years of exp on an os that was 5 years old. I know what they meant but its still funny to read. I think the hardest thing about finding a new job was that MOST of the companies didnt even know what they needed. I would go into an interview for an admin position and they actually needed a developer. Anyway the market is WAY oversaturated thank god people are quiting school for IT. Most of them are retards anyway and have no idea how to troubleshoot anything. Offshoring IS REAL and it can happen to you. Hell the company I used to work at has over 150 developers working there. Rumor has it they are now going to outsource ALL developement. They already started with outsourcing older apps.

Oh my god that is freakin funny. Anyway I know how you feel. My old place of employment was the same way. We used to get phone calls everyday from developers asking if we changed the passwords on the servers because now thier apps dont work. YEAH WE RANDOMLY CHANGE YOUR PASSWORDS JUST TO BREAK YOUR APPS BECAUSE WE LOVE TALKING TO YOU ON THE PHONE ABOUT WHY WE BROKE YOUR APP. I agree that in most places its the users that cause most of the problems. BUT and this is a BIG BUTT.. To me its still IT's problem. If your users cause a lot of the problems. Try a little training. I now work at a much smaller place. Only 30 end users instead of 600. So it's a little easier to squeez in some training. One the other subject of IT not doing its job. I have been many places where IT guys sit around playing quake all day. Hell when I came here there were 3 types of RPG's installed on my pc. There are a lot of IT geeks that just sit there and goof around all day but there are a HELL of a lot more that work their asses off 24x7 and get no credit at all. Again to me this is IT's problem. You need to get notice out to the users and let them know whats going on and what your doing. I myself keep a task list of all open and closed calls for the IT group on our intranet. At any point in time any user can click on a link and see what I have done today. The old IT guy here was notorious for never doing anything. I know with 1 IT guy 30 users 100 phones and a whole bunch of computers hooked up to machines. That is imposible that he did NOTHING all day. I think he was just not capable of communicating to users what he WAS doing all day. Hell everyone here thinks I work my ass off 24x7. I am a busy feller but I still have some free time to /.

from the article "And in another first, fast-growing Linux took third place, bumping machines with IBM's mainframe operating system, z/OS. Linux server sales grew from $4.3 billion in 2004 to $5.3 billion in 2005, while mainframes dropped from $5.7 billion to $4.8 billion over the same period, Eastwood" So it looks to me like its a combo of things. MS is making a larger footprint in the server business.. also linux is taking away from Unix. Either way I see this as + for both. Also mainframe sales are dropping. I think this has to do with the fact that companies are out sourcing so much they no longer need a giant $$ server. A couple smaller less inexpensive MS or linux servers suite the needs.
