    Wrong.
You can't PUBLISH pictures of the Eiffel tower AT NIGHT since the new lighting system is copyrighted.
You still can take whatever pictures of it you want whenever you like. You just can't publish those taken at night without prior authorization.
It's a way for the operating company (and the city of Paris) to get their share of the cake that publications displaying the Eiffel Tower (books, postcards, etc) represent. And they're in no way interested in the pictures you might upload to your blog or personnal website.
Furthermore, there is nothing democratic at stake here, it's just a matter of enforcing a legit copyright on an artistic and technical achievement (the lighting system) that's not yet part of the public domain (contrary to the tower itself)

It's not that simple. To register as an author or compositor (or both) with the SACEM (the french organisation that manages author rights) you have to (AFAIK) release an album with at least 3 songs you wrote or co-wrote. Alternatively you can ask an established artist (preferably someone famous, as I understand it) to become your sponsor, which eliminates the need for an album release.

  8. Re:Wording?? on France to Legalize File Sharing · · Score: 1

The national assembly and the deputies (legislative authority) are not part of the government (executive authority).

They are elected and work separately, and although they both represent the people, they don't always cooperate (mostly depends on whatever wing is in power) and can occasionally fight each other:
the assembly can censor the government (quite rare), the government can forcibly promulgate a bill of law without the deputies' consent (which happened twice since the latest presidential and legislative elections in 2002) and the president can dissolve the assembly (which last happened in 1995 IIRC - a disaster for the RPR (right wing) majority at that time)

Gas heaters don't have reservoirs. They can heat water way faster than electric ones, therefore they do it on demand. (I wish i had one)

Reminds me of Datura. Not the chamanic herbal drug with days lasting effects, the imaginary US army nerve gas in Coin Locker Babies (great book from Ryû Murakami)

In the book, whoever is exposed to the gas enters an hyper-agressive state, and starts attacking anyone they see, until they eventually die.
But actually, real life datura has somewhat related effects. If you drink it (with tea), or smoke it (even worse), it'll make you lose any sense of fear, and you might very well kill yourself without even trying (or at least hurt yourself bad and without even noticing it). That's why it's recommended to have someone look after you if you are to trip under datura (someone really patient, with lots of time and little need for sleep as datura's effects last anywhere from 12 to 48 hours IIRC).

  13. Re:fear is a good thing on Scientists Produce Fearless Mice · · Score: 1

    Exactly,
Fear is necessary as it keeps us from doing stupid things, and I feel that is even more important for soldiers. Would a fearless soldier be able to correctly evaluate a threat and deal with it without taking unnecessary risks (eg. running headfirst into a room without checking for booby traps or potential dangers first)? I doubt it.
I think in a combat situation it's actually positive to be afraid -provided you're experienced and know yourself enough to manage it- because it makes you extra careful and thus increases your chances of surviving. Moreover fear in front of an immediate danger can give you an adrenaline boost that may very well save your life (faster running, altered perception of time, tunnel vision...)
That's natural selection actually. Those fearless mice would probably have a lower life expectancy than their non genetically engineered counterparts, if they were to live outside a lab. I think the same goes for troopers.
Now, if this enables soldier to know control, and actually use their fear on the battlefield to their advantage, If it can help saving (friendly or unfriendly)lives, that's good. But let's not play with fire here.
On a somewhat related note, I've been canyoning last summer, and at some point there was an optional 10 meter dive into a very cold river. I chose to go for it, eventhough I was afraid to. I jumped but ended up with a nasty back injury -Spiderman 2 style. I wish I had listened to my fear and self-preservation instinct, because it keeps hurting today.

Joking aside, there's a long term battle going on here between workers and employers, and the whole french employment and social model is at stake. A powerful CEOs lobby known as MEDEF is pushing hard to shift the model to "Easy to hire, easy to fire", but that is hard to swallow when like those young rioters you have trouble finding anything but short term, underpaid jobs.

Nah just kidding here. The french laws only protects personnal copy and redistributing is assimilated to counterfeit.

But it's true that we might end up paying two taxes to the same people who sue p2p users. (note that we already pay a tax not only on blank CDs or DVDs, but also on HDDs)
