Do you think that the SS#s might have been the student ID #s? I remember a few years ago that a law was passed in NY requiring schools to NOT use SS#s as their student ID#s. Because of this RPI switched to another 9-digit number.

I'd initially blame the professor who posted the page because there are places to post them electronically that can only be accessed through a password/login. Then I'd blame the IT staff because posting names matched to ID#s is a violation of RPI's privacy policy.

RPI's network is fairly open because there are a lot of students there who try writing experimental programs (remember the Phynd controversy a few years ago? That was only one of 3 search engines at the time) on the network, and disallowing packets to/from certain ports would hinder a lot of these programs. I've gone to friends' campuses and found their networks to be much more restrictive, but also much slower than RPI's. RPI had 10 Mbps to ALL campus buildings and 100Mbps to a select few in 1999, not a bad accomplishment!

I remember hearing a story about when my uncles were playing with their job money once (back in the 60's) and one of them lost everything in a poker game. The kid (my uncle) was pretty upset, and grammy wanted to refund the money, but grandpa wouldn't hear it. He let it be a lesson to him, and you know what? Right now that uncle is one of the best money managers and card players that I know. He learned a hard lesson in losing a week's paycheck, but he LEARNED.

Similar things have happened from time to time with the rest of the family, but it's a life lesson. And while there's been other kinds of problems with various family members, I've never heard of ANY them having a gambling problem because they've all been there and/or seen it.

Then when dual layer DVD's hit the market we can make a fan's unmangled version that will play in normal DVD players!

Check out this site. They sell converters so that you can plug just about anything through their converters and then right into the head unit without FM transmitters / modulators: you get dual RCA jacks.

I found this site yesterday because I'm in this market. I want to build a small ITX carputer and hopefully mount it in my new '04 Civic HX so that the car still looks stock. It'll have 802.11x and a removable HD, and I'd LIKE to tie it into the stock head unit so that I can change songs using the regular track forward/backward controls: maybe use the cd increment/decrement button to skip to the next/previous letter in the alphabet. Ideallly it would display the track information right on the stock LCD, but I'll probably just go with a small monochrome LCD and/or a 5" screen that can fold out. To do any of this though, the LogJam converter will need to do the conversion for me, or I'll need to figure out the pinouts on the head unit and I'm sure the whole thing will void my warranty, but that's life.

  15. Re:Yeah, why all the stops and starts? on Cable HDTV Not Ready For Primetime? · · Score: 4, Informative

The answer is "Garbage In, Garbage Out."

When I worked at Time Warner in summer of 2001 (Albany, NY), we had a few calls for people who wanted to get the new HDTV digital converters. Since we only had about 4 of those installations the whole summer, each one was a half-day event for one or even two of the most skilled technicians we had. They would make sure everything ran perfectly before they'd leave.

I was in a position in the company to hear a lot of what the actual problems were, and the most common complaint was just a weak signal to the converter. Even coaxial cable loses signal strength over distance, and as anyone who's tried hooking 6 TV's up to an unamplified signal can attest, the quality sucks when you split it too much with bad equipment or have a 500' coil of cable behind your TV. So with the highly-compressed HDTV signals when you lose a small amount of data, it makes a big impact on the picture.

Each of the HDTV installations that summer (except one) required the techs to install a new drop (the wire between the pole and the house). They all required new splitters, new wire to the HDTV converteres, and sometimes an amplifier right at the input to the house. There were always bad feelings toward "the Radio Shack s**t" that people install themselves, and as a result every tech always carried replacements with them, and many times this fixed the problems with regular TV and RoadRunner (internet service).

So back to HDTV: I'm convinced that the graininess and the pausing of this guy's picture can be traced back to a weak signal. He lives in Manhatten so the wires in his building are probably old and failing, and even if they aren't there are many other potential problems that could be causing his poor picture quality. Because he obviously doesn't know about signal degredation, he may have simply hooked up too many TV's to the same signal. Also, Sony WEGAs are very good TVs. They take a regular picture and make the most out of it, so quite frankly I'm not surprised at all with his results. Like I said at first: Garbage In, Garbage Out.

My advice to him is to call Time Warner and have them send a technician out to test the signal and inspect the set-up. That, and to not jump to conclusions about the infrastructure not being prepared. He may be right about the entire area being unready for the HDTV invasion, but no amount of work on Time Warner's part will ever be able to fix the problems inside the end user's apartment if they split the signal 32 different ways.

One of my favorite radio stations is 102.7FM WEQX (Manchester VT, but I can hear them in the Albany NY area just fine) simply because they don't pump out the same crap over and over.

91.5 WRPI plays a lot of eclectic and oftentimes strange music, and they aren't corporate slaves.

88.3 WVCR "The Saint" plays mostly hit music during peak hours, but other than that, you can hear just about anything: classical, folk, rock and rap sometimes within a few hours, especially if you're up for some sleepless night.

The bottom line is that there are a handful of radio stations that are actually doing very well without ClearChannel's meddling. Try finding one of these because they're actually enjoyable to listen to, and you might find that it's better than listening to your music collection over and over. Or try finding a local NPR station. Or listen to any given AM station, they can be pretty damn funny sometimes, especially when they're trying to be serious.

Easy, easy, easy to address that problem... it probably wouldn't even require a major change in most states' DWI policies.

Do I have to spell it out? Make it illegal to drive while high. People will still do it, but then again people still do it even now. A more relevant rebuttal would have been: 'if marijuana were legalized it is very likely that people would feel more comfortable smoking in public, and doing stupid things like driving while high. This would increase the number of THC-related car accidents and cost innocent people their lives'.

Basically I do think that yes, more people would be stupid about their smoking habits if marijuana were legalized, but I also think that if current DWI laws were expanded to include it (if they don't already) then the problem would be much mitigtated, to the point of being no worse than it is now.

I also think that there are far too many nonviolent drug users locked up and costing me my tax money that would be so much better spent on treatment. The gun-toting dealers who'd shoot a cop or anyone else without thinking twice, and the idiotic people who take a drive to White Castle when they can hardly walk straight thereby running down a line of schoolchildren can rot in federal-pound-me-in-the-ass prison for all eternity for all I care, but the harmless offenders (both dealing & buying) with otherwise clean records, with no weapons, not driving, doing nothing more harmful than watching TV and giving themselves lung cancer certainly shouldn't face the same jail terms. These people can be given treatment for much more effective results.
