  1. Re:The key is knowing how to fix it on Why Do Gadgets Break? · · Score: 1

I dropped an old mobile phone in a toilet, and it lived, a Sony Ericson T68i! I had been to the pub and had had a skin-full, was taking a piss at home and decided to have a look at my phone with my other hand, to see the time. Well, I dropped it mid-flow. Even though I was drunk I knew I had 2 choices: grab the phone ASAP, get it dry and it might work, or fuck it off cos its likely died and because its sitting in a toilet full of piss (hell, might aswell flush it). Being drunk I stuck my hand straight in the bog and grabbed it, rinsed the phone under running cold water whilst taking the cover off and removing the battery, wiped off as much moisture as possible and sat all the bits on top of a radiator for a week or so in a sock.

When I tried the phone after drying it out, it miraculously worked! And better than before it went for its swim - previously some of the buttons were rather unresponsive, but afterwards they worked like new (for about a month) - I guess the "solvent" it was exposed to shifted the fluff and dirt from behind the buttons! And it tended to have better reception after the dip too!

I didn't think of trying to shift any moisture with IPA, not that there was any in the house, but I should think IPA and warm air would help to remove any remaining moisture in electronics quite effectively. The point of my (rather gross) anecdote is that if you dry electronics properly, they do still sometimes work after getting wet!

Make your MP3s better than the shit on P2P, so research LAME and it's cunning settings. Embed the album or single artwork at a not-huge res within the MP3s (the res that will look best on an iPod), and put the URL for the band and more downloads in the ID3 comment field. That way, if some random joe finds the track on P2P at least they may be lead to a source where they may pay for more.

I still buy CDs partially for the physical album art, and I really love what some bands do with their sleeve's. When a visitor buys an MP3 or album of, why not offer nice hi-res copies of the album art for download too? It should be possible to have PDFs produced too by the site for download so that the user can even print their own CD album art and burn a physical copy (do offer PDF as an extra - I'd personally want a decent JPG or PNG).

And offer MD5 or SHA1 checksums of the MP3s too at download time, to keep the paranoid geeks happy. And make sure your servers are happy with clients using download managers. I don't know how widely used the likes of Getright are anymore, but back int' day, I hated it when an HTTP server wouldn't offer resuming, which was pretty essential on dial-up.

I should think that is one of the reasons why an IMEI dbase is not more efficient.

As for returning guarentee cards, no thanks. The phone operators can easily determine your usual phone's IMEI number anyway, and they also have that info recorded anyway: I once entered my SIM's PIN wrong 3 times and locked it out. To undo this, I had to key in the IMEI number. To get this, I phoned my operator (from a friend's phone), gave them my phone number (and maybe some more info, or confirmed info) and they gave me the IMEI number. All this was done in a pub.

OK, so it follows that the fewer places my bank details are, the less likely a direct debit could be set up to hoover my account. So by not using Paypal, by not even having an account (anymore), I cannot be phished, nor can PP be cracked (tech or social) and my details getting out.

Though my bank details may be visible to other ebay users I buy from, and by extension their accounts could be hacked and my details obtained by a crook, but this is pretty unlikely. But by the sounds of it the DD scheme is very protected and thats the only real "attack vector" if you have my sort code, name and a/c number.

But I found a file on my laptop earlier that I used as a notebook whilst I was constructing my rant to put in the box when closing the Paypal account I had (in error...). I feel I need to share this with the world, and you can give Paypal this amount of abuse and they don't do anything! :) This chunk is over 2000 chars, but the 1000 character limit was enforced with javascript IIRC (can I get a shout out to NoScript?).

1000 characters is not enough. Why place a limit? Can't Paypal take criticism? Or more likely those beloved shareholders are more important than your customers?

Paypal are greedy cunts, security is BS, you react in knee-jerk ways to sec issues (as long as paypal isn't ripped off, fraud isn't a problem from your point of view. So what if the customer get ripped off, what are they going to do, find another escrow service they can use on ebay?).

But fat-cat execs can't ever see what is wrong with their greed (and that attitude filters throughout an organisation. Do you have wanker middle-mgmt types that will fuck over the peons for personal gain (like bonuses or cars)?). I bet the person who reads this (first, but I doubt even if this gets escalated no-one will give a shit) is paid an insulting salary and hates their job, or at least the office politics etc..

At least in the UK you are regulated by the FSA, but elsewhere I understand you can do what you like, because your not a bank and are so able to avoid any regulation.

PS It's trivial to by pass restrictions on a website, and only a retard would think that a JS limiter would be worth deploying into the production environment. But let me guess, the accountant types make the decisions, not the people who actually understand tech.

I don't use ebay much, but from my recent use it appears that a reasonable amount of (power?) sellers openly publish their bank details for payers' convienience. To transfer money I need the accounts name, sort code and account number, and with that info I can only put money into the account, not remove any. The ebay seller would get my bank details on their statement probably.

Do you realized that everytime you give out that information you are risking being taken for all that you have in the bank. One of the Nigerian scams involves getting you banking information and then poof you account is dry

Of course I'm aware of the 419'ers, but no (British) bank should let funds be removed from an account with just the a/c name, number and sort code, AFAIK! I have heard the senario you have described above before, and always taken it with a pinch of salt, but that doesn't mean I'm blazé with my bank info. Also, that bank info is nothing more than can be shoulder surfed from my card anyway, or from the bottom edge of a cheque - i.e. the info is essentially in the open anyway. If I am a fraud victim and I haven't disclosed anything stupid (like my PIN), then my bank should be receptive to giving me a refund (they should refund fraud victims no matter what, but I digress). If I have allowed a corporate entity to drain my account because I didn't read terms and conditions correctly, then I'm a bit fucked.

Whereas, as this and other stories document, Microsoft's drm policies have been getting more restrictive, even before compatibility issues like Zune and PlayForSure.

Not to troll, but the lifted restrictions Apple have given in the big scheme of things don't make a lot of difference: If you can burn even one audio CD from protected music what's it matter if you can burn 5 or 7 (or 100)? (Though it then follows why have the protection at all?). What I am saying is that maybe Apple are appearing to be lifting restrictions so that the Apple fanboys [1] have ammo to use in debates against MS' DRM? This would be very good for Apple's business. People like to pan MS (as do I), and if Apple can make their DRM appear less shitty than MS' then one-nil to Apple.

People who truly understand DRM won't entertain it at all, and so they won't ever have problems with their CDs/MP3s or XviD not working in 30 years (or 3!). There was a post above where someone got burnt twice by MS' DRM, so went to Apple! WTF? You didn't learn, did you? No version of any Apple software has ever required registration or license confirmation.

I've not seen forced registration, but when you first turn on an Apple machine you're asked to agree to the EULA, and for the first run of iTunes and for subsequent updates. I may be a bit wrong, but I'm pretty sure of this as I do the updates and stuff on my Mum's Mac Mini, so I think I've been offered a licence to agree to with iTunes updates.
