Not the usual funny stuff, and I don't necessarily agree, but it is an opinion of a WWII veteran, and pertinent to this discussion...so...
Interview with 'Grandpa' on 12/6/07 about WWII and Gaming:

    Q. What do you think about gamers playing video games based on World War II?
    A. I haven't really paid enough attention to the games themselves to be able to tell you truthfully, but I would think, if it's just people shooting one another, I don't think it's a proper thing for young people to do. I think it sets a bad example for them, because they get into the mood of doing that, and that begins their lifestyle. And that's not the lifestyle you want.

    Q. When groups of gamers are playing these games together it is common for some of them to play as the enemy. They might play as Germans defending the beach at Normandy for example. What's your opinion of that?
    A. Well, it ties back in to what I already said. I don't think it's an appropriate game. I think they can make games that will interest kids, that don't have to include war. We don't need to be killing each other in games. There's other ways of strategizing and using the kind of skills that make those games popular.

I'm sure I'm not the only one here on Slashdot who remembers spending hours typing in BASIC programs from source code listings in magazines, debugging the typos, and then finally getting the thing working, and then leave a note on the computer saying not to turn it off or reboot it, since there was no way to save all that work.

This. I got a magazine about every once in a blue moon and, as a 9/10 year old, always became endlessly frustrated by what I am now convinced must have been deliberate typographical errors in program listings. I also still have blisters on my finger tips from winding tape back into those damn casettes. They have risen to the level of using a proprietary engine, QUAKE ONE, which was open sourced NINE YEARS AGO.

Sorry, but at the very least, that's disingenuous...they haven't just used the Quake engine to make their game. They've taken the open-sourced Quake engine, and by the looks of the video, completely overhauled it. I played Quake Arena and from that video Nexuiz appears to be orders of magnitude better in terms of graphics, features and pace. The state of the original engine is completely irrelevant.

There is an underlying problem with this strategy; in that it is that it's targeted at locked laptops... which need to shut down and power off the CPU cache in order to not run out of power in the next 30 minutes.

As I understand it...the attack their method is trying to prevent is the case where you have a locked machine (not necessarily a laptop, but it could be), but the encryption key is stored in RAM. The attacker powers off the machine and immediately cools the RAM right down and plugs it into another machine especially designed to copy anything off it and find such things as encryption keys. From the sounds of things, their method stores the encryption key, not in RAM, but in the CPU cache, so that any attempt to power off the machine and plunder the contents of RAM will be fruitless.I.E. it takes advantage of the fact that anything in the CPU cache is lost really quite easily...as you mentioned...

Now, if we think about this for a picosecond..the kind of people with the where-with-all to successfully launch an attack of this nature will be police forces and governments and if you're the kind of person who wants to stay one step ahead of either, you're the kind of person who won't mind re-entering a decryption key every time you resume/reboot etc. If I've got anything wrong, please correct me. If I've been trolled then mea culpa..

I have no idea why the parent post was modded "Troll"?? This is what concerns me more than anything. The Daily Fail will sensationalise anything, and unfortunately it's read by a lot of old people and a lot of people who are marginally too intelligent to read The Sun but not intelligent enough to realise the Daily Mail is no better. People who will turn out in record numbers to vote for any legislation that will hang hoodies and expel immigrants.

Light bulbs...not a particularly sensational story right? Wrong. Apparently. My grandad now believes it's every citizen's right to be able to buy "traditional" light bulbs, especially as those new-fangled light bulbs can give you The Skin Cancer!

The 70 and 80 year olds around today may have fought in the war, but they didn't know why. They were at war with The Hun and that's about as far as there understanding of world-politics ever went. "The 60s" as you say, was an era of love and peace, but think about all the 25-40 year olds who couldn't shirk responsibilities like work and family to discover theirselves. While Mary Quant was stirring up the Kings Road, and The Beatles were visiting the Maharaja, they were working to put food on the table. So the dissonance between those two things is actually quite easy to understand. And don't forget, anyone over 18 between 1939 and 1952 will have had to carry an ID Card, as they see it, if you have nothing to hide, then why should you have anything to fear?

Most of the install media is taken up by maps/graphics/FMV/Audio etc which barring some really really stupid design decisions should be platform independent. Quake 3,Doom3, ET:QW, Unreal Tournament 2k3(?) all shipped in one physical package IIRC, all resources were on the same 3CDs/DVDs etc. and the Linux installer was either on the install media, or downloadable separately.

  25. Re:Simplification on Why Game Developers Should Support OS X and Linux · · Score: 1
Just by saying "In other words" you don't get to completely sidestep the issue at hand. The point is, by targeting <10% of the market, their sales increased by more than 120%. Even if you could only bring yourself to look at their simplistic pie chart you would see that Mac + Linux sales came to 55% of their sales, compared to Windows' 45%. They're not advocating everyone target only Mac and Linux, they're saying that if you target those platforms as well as Windows you can substantially increase your revenue.

The other issue raised is that getting press coverage for a Windows only game is difficult for Indies because of the sheer number of games released and that it is easier for the other two, which they claim leads to increased exposure not only among Linux and Mac gamers, but also among Windows gamers. For instance, a mention on Slashdot for a cross-platform game that ran on Linux would be seen by Windows and Mac gamers as well.

The reasons cited for the increased exposure are that the barrier to getting exposure for a Mac/Linux title is reduced because a) there is less competition and b) the userbase on those platforms is more vocal. Whether those reasons represent reality is to be seen...who knows...

Since I don't think you actually read all that much of the article, heres a quote from the end:

To conclude, if you're not supporting Linux and Mac OS X from a philosophical standpoint or for the fans, at least do it for the money. If you don't support non-Windows platforms, you're leaving a lot of cash on the table. I don't know about you, but I'm not in a position to just say f-- it to a large community of people who want to support us.
