Or, do you mean the more subtle way that Bush's handlers set up "Ask the Jackass" sessions using pre-screened friendlies and assigned questions?

Don't kid yourself. Politicians may gripe and complain about each other and the different parties, but that's all just show to keep the stupid masses entertained. Nobody would watch things like their stupid conventions if they handled themselves intelligently, so they invited mud-slinging soap operas into their political careers as a way to keep the sheeple entertained. Evil doesn't give a rat's ass about party lines. If it's not democrats stamping out rights it's republicans. If the libertarians or the greens had enough power, they'd be doing it to. The majority of politicians who make it only care about getting (re)elected, they don't care about insignificant things like rights. That's not a democratic or republican thing, it's a political thing.

  7. Welcome To Slashdot. Mind The Nerd Shit. on Does Shareware X-Chat for Windows Violate the GPL? · · Score: 2, Interesting

This is Slashdot. Slashdot doesn't operate on any sort of intelligent, driving logic, it operates on heated misunderstanding, ideological warfare, and name calling. On Slashdot, the same people who will vocally and vehemently denounce the RIAA for suing infringers (that is: for legally enforcing their rights on their content) will hop on over to a story like this and cry for the heads of anyone who "violates" the GPL (that is: they'll demand that the developers enforce their rights on their content).

If you haven't figured it out yet, the overall setting of Slashdot is akin to a preschool playground when it comes to any sort of intelligent discussion or critical thought. The nerds that hang out here (they're not "geeks" - most of these buffoons know nothing about the technology they yelp about, they're just trying to look "cool". Most of the "geeks" abandoned this crapfest long ago) feel such an overwhelming sense of entitlement that I'd be surprised if they don't think it's unfair that random people don't stop and blow them on the sidewalk. Frankly, I don't think you could possibly find a website with a stupider, more childish "it's all mine" attitude and userbase than Slashdot. So, why bother? Join in the fun and flame/troll away. The S/N ratio is already so poor that nobody could possibly notice anyway.

The reference to "Alabama English" (or whatever state it was) is indicative of a regional dialect. While they may also have a different accent that can impair the delivery and reception of messages between the two speakers, the dialect is the only thing that was actually referenced as a problem.

There are many other differences that could impact the message such as colloquialisms, euphisms (which would also come into play based on cultural differences), slang, etc. However, the only problem noted (from the GP post, I didn't RTFA) indicates that the different dialects are what impaired the communication process.

The judiciary's job in this matter is to ensure that nobody is being discriminated against. They said that disallowing gay marriage is discriminatory. Therefore, gay marriage is to be recognized.

The constitution recognizes that the majority is NOT always right and that it can be used to bludgeon the rights of minority individuals. If it were up to the people of individual states to decide this sort of thing, minorities and women still wouldn't be voting in many, many places, we'd have seperate schools and water fountains, and black people would still be sitting in the backs of buses.

Discrimination is discrimination and the only way you're going to get away with it is if you eliminate the judiciary altogether, then pass laws which explicitly ALLOW you to freely discriminate against groups of people. Which is, of course, an idea that has been floated as of late.
