My Gentoo system is so out wack from time to time and something always needing to be re-compiled that I haven't gotten around to yet. If a system like mine is all over the map how can live Tech Support really help me? Sometimes I try to ask a question in IRC but even that becomes tricky.
I'll admit I had jumped from Win-world to Gentoo and kind of learned on the fly. I imagine tech support will have to deal with moderate noobs like me at the start of the call. Like ask a few qualification questions first.
"You don't know that [obscure command]? Read a book or two then please call back."
I like this idea. Media hordes, read as RIAA and MPAA, will constantly try to find technical ways to put the P2P genie back in the bottle.
For every Napster (Kazaa, etc.) they close, another will be spawned. For every fake or intrusive system they create to battle downloaders, another downloading method will be innovated. For every commercial they feature a celebrity crying copyright heresy,/. mobs will just mock them.
It's no shattering concept there'll never be a checkmate for either side.
For me, this guy is the most influential musician of the last 15 years.
Yup...and sadly I think I'm among the many that only knows that "F*ck you like an animal" song. I probably have listen to a trillion of their songs and not realized it...the tragic case of several bands in the '90s all trying to sound the same...they indeed succeeded.
In all the the spin offs of Star Trek (STNG my fav) there's something wrong in every episode. They can replicate anything; transport pretty much anywhere; gather and dispense a great wealth of information to better improve life....and yet there's always some furry ass or an extreme-badass-acne-from-hell alien bastard throwing a monkey wrench in the whole scene of serenity.
I guess the episodes wouldn't be as entertaining if everything was perfect and tranquil with the Klingons.
Oh well...I'm sure Scott Bakula will be able to Quantum Leap to another show.
...other white collar crimes will not be prosecuted as they won't recieve much media attention to propagate to young eager script kiddies the scary consequences of making network adminstrators look bad.
I like how it starts off "right tools in the right places and makes no assumptions about the users' knowledge of Linux."
Why not say, "Made the assumption the user is moving from Windows to Linux." That's like the same as me saying, "I know I'm going to get modded down for saying this....":P
I have yet to meet anyone that's running a homebrew cluster and tell me which distro they're running...as awesome as they appear to be.
What I gathered from my introductory Operating Systems class was that this was the next frontier and exciting market to keep an eye for.......that and creating applications for these setups was not as you said, standarized yet. Can Linux applications that normally run a single box setup migrate relatively easily to a cluster setup yet?
I'm anxious to try some of protocols at home using Mozilla. While I assume several ppl will argue that Konqueror is an incredible browser I quickly gave it up when I learned it was showing some website incorrectly that were using certain CSS. Prehaps they've addressed to these problems in the last KDE 3.3.1 upgrade.
On the free service sites most just like the attention they recieve. I've become addicted to teasing these sorts of girls and trying to shatter their paradigms.....often they'll either hate me and realize I'll never concur, appologize or kiss their ass....or they become really interested.
Attractive women live on a totally separate list of evolutionary rules than we think they do. -- David DeAngelo
Damn!!!! That's really is a good idea.....the Olsen twins might not be realistic....but that Hasslehoff and Shatner would sell, so long as there was KITT in it.
When are people going to stop allowing the networks to shove this filth down their throats?
I have to say I love how SpikeTV does their reality shows as it sort of pokes fun at the whole reality TV genre (i.e. the 1st Joe Shmoe). From the sounds of this show they're doing it again by taking how the effects of Hollywood on people are amusing as well.
I suppose not everyone has the sense of humour to see why these sorts of phony situations are hilarious. As long as the show pokes fun at themselves and the joke is really on those that buy it....well then I don't mind. It's when I hear about these Bachelor-style horsecrap shows that're suppose to be serious.
I love how ppl forget that the governor of Florida was related to Baby Bush and the judges on the Supreme Court were in the Bush family's pocket. Oh yeah....no question it was clear victory. Dang schnooks!
"The key challenge for Microsoft is not XP users," said Mr Beighton, "it's the Windows 98 and 95 machines."
Any bets that we'll still this line 5 or 10 years down the road? The "ain't broke, don't fix" mentality is above and beyond some individuals' concept of needing to update.
"Update? Why do'z I need to do'z dat? My solitare runz just fine ma!"
...a Linux distro that is specifically hardened to act as a dedicated firewall and nothing else.
Do you know any top notch distros off the top of your head? I'm going through the distro list at linux.org....but it's tough to tell which ones are stellar between the ones that are Mickey Mouse projects.
I'm just throwing this out here in a weak attempt to avoid RTFM...but is there a top ten list of viruses or spyware for Linux?
I've only been using Gentoo for about 2 months now and have been for the most part naive about looking further into security; firewalls; and virus scanners for Linux; my easy breezy KDE; and Gentoo in specific.
These are some really nitty gritty questions I do not have the answers for.
Leave the cable plugged in and see if she does detect your connection. I know I have to play around with DHCP to get mine to work. Open up a console and fire off the "ifconfig" command. That'll list your eth connections and their respective IPs. If you don't have a listing for eth0 or eth1....then that's when you gotta google and hit up them forums to find out how to get a connection going.
I wish you all the luck. You're a good man, I don't care what they say about you.;P
Is that why you think I responded? To get the last word?
Yes, yes I do.
I take it by your response that all DSL modems are not supported.
I cannot safely say 100% right now off the top of my head, to assure you like a safe snuggly blankie, that your particular DSL modem is popular and hence supported by the current Linux kernel. I WILL go out on a limb and say that it's very unlikely it won't support your particular modem.
When I was installing Gentoo on my system i had to struggle to learn how to compile a kernel properly in order to get my SATA harddrive working and on-board nic. I imagine if I used another more user friendly distro like Mandrake or RedHat this would not have been such a problem. I like problems though...b/c figuring out the solution is alot of laughs.
You may think that you live "in reality" when it comes to attitude and "training the sheep" but the only reality is that you'll chase more folks away than convert.
Well it's not my prerogative to change other ppl's reality. While you may observe it as "chasing off", I observe it as quality control. Most ppl are intelligent enough to see through my horseshit and find the pony anyways.
I checked knoppix.net since I don't read german and wasn't going to babel it -
There's no need. Take your time and you'll notice there's a English/US flag near the top...give her a click and der' iz da Engrish.
A few questions - When I do boot - What will be the biggest difference in navigation/usage? Will there be any major things I need to research before using it to get connectivity? What devices shouldn't be connected to the pc? I'm guessing the sidewinder, strategic commander, and the dell axim I have should be disconnected.
When you boot up Knoppix (and depending if you have a fast CD-ROM and at least some decent CPU power like a PIII and up) it'll blow your mind away! You will be surrounded by heavenly music and light and start to feel the power surging from within the universe itself...that or you'll shrug your shoulders smuggly and wonder why you listen to depressing music to begin with.
Seriously though when I boot up Knoppix at work I usually disconnect my ethernet cable just for my paranoid security reasoning. I know it's possible to get a connection going and take over a Windows machine as I've read this post before. As for your other devices...hell I'd leave them in, you'll be surprised how Knoppix will auto-detect most of it. Keep in mind Knoppix is not only to have a taste of the Linux world, it's also a kick ass rescue CD and a mighty ace to hold in hand as I've posted how to take over a Windows machine at Oatnet.ca. Alot of laughs!
What of your tone? You make an assumption and respond with sarcasm. I'm supposed to listen to a messenger that can't set aside bias to have an actual discussion?
It seems to be the only way I'm getting through to sheep these days. To be honest I'd rather grab them by their shoulders and shake some sense into them, or at best shatter their paradigms.
Driver support is included for all dsl modems?
Try using google.com or joining a linux distro forum...they're much more helpful, patient, but twice as sarcastic so I don't recommend sensitivity to commentary.
Yes, I don't know anything about Linux. Yes, I am open to trying new things.
That's good lad...I hope you continue. You ought to try out Knoppix, it's a LiveCD so there's no installation or changes required!!! Yup, just boot off this sweetheart and see for yourself why Linux is the cat's meow.
Perhaps one day you'll realize that attitudes like yours are hampering acceptance of Linux.
Probably not, I live in my reality not yours.
BTW - Go and read other comments I've made here. I don't belittle people when talking. Perhaps if you scan thru the comments - you can come back - drop the attitude, and share some info.
*Golf clap to you lad!*
You're right though....it's a good day indeed.(wanting that last word is a tweaker ain't it?)

LMAO!!!!!! Obviously you need to join us at Off the Wall. That'll change and swing that perception of yours mighty quick!

Right on! High fives around...drinks on the house!

There's a gazillon users of Hotmail thanks to the tie-in with MSN Messenger.
If Google came out with a decent IM....well I'd jump ship from MSN and be on my gmail account faster than a cougar on a crippled chicken.
I'm suspecting one of you works for Dell, and the other has been screwed by Dell.
I personally think the company should hire someone to do the tasks this POS computer is doing. Create some jobs goddamn it!
