Just back from my week long boycott of slashdot. I'd have to disagree with AC the other website has functioned perfectly for me. And more so by it's interest in serving it's community of users. Is it just me? Or has there been a marked increase in submissions here?
anyways for those who missed it, dice holdings has pissed of a large portion of the slashdot userbase. We have left the site enmasse. Regardless of the number of submissions, the quantity of comments has diminished greatly here. And at the heart of it, that is the attraction of this site for most.
How have you dealt with fans reactions to influences of change over the years. Give them something new? or Keep giving them the familiar that they want?In the same vein, have you ever had to scrap a body of work entirely?
The incremental improvement concept is a dead horse. As the saying goes: "can't polish a turd". I'm out for the week. Boycott in effect. Shame on you, a bunch of fuckers all so say I.
Respect. Nailed it:
>The problem though is that the idea behind the new site itself is broken, so whatever is being built is being built on wrong foundations
The intent expressed about "fixing the beta" is fud. It can't be fixed. It is fundamentally flawed. Keeping the current interface and comment system by majority is the consensus wish. strike while the iron is hot. Boycott commencing feb 10.
I feel the loss of the comment threads as much as you jellomizer. Which is exactly what this whole thing is about. The new site model nukes the existing message board structure.
Rather than see these as off topic posts, spamming the message boards, try the perspective that there is only one topic until this issue is resolved to the communities satisfaction and that these comments are in fact using the message boards for their intended purpose: maintaining a moderated discussion guided by the consensus generated by the readership.
These posts have become the most effective manner of communicating to the correct authority. The correct authority in this case is the broad readership, some of whom are just learning about this. The other authority is the controlling entities who have thus far made some poor choices about not responding to the communities posts in the designated channels. Therefore this is the next step in a spectrum of responses.
I personally apologize to you for the necessity of this step which has been provoked by the site operators. I do hope things change quickly, since I love slashdot. I am slashdot.
A change of course can be made overnight. There has been no commitment to maintain what the community that creates this site on a daily basis requires.
If you think fixing the unspeakable new site with new code is an option, you probably don't understand the fundamental problems with it, aside from the look and feel. It ain't Slashdot. That's the problem.
The most ironic thing is this filter error I got when trying to emulate the Beta with ascii art: "Filter error: Please use fewer 'junk' characters."
Even the comment filter from classic says "Fuck Beta" for the whitespace and excessive line boxes
Honest to gosh, was this some high school project? I mean seriously, the images don't even show up with the correct aspect ratio, they're all squished.
Boycott as scheduled. The point must be made firmly.
Aside from being forthright communication, this thread is also a PR move designed to fragment a strong movement. It is crucial to not relent. This is only the first step. We must show teeth and continue this demonstration.
Do not be swayed by shiny beads and poison blankets.
Fuck Beta.
No really. This present system works, as evidenced in this thread.
Yes, this is the community using the community forum to discuss a meta issue "Things that matter". If you're looking for someone to blame, blame the thrust of this site dismembering. There won't be anything left for you in the future. By your complaint you're actually with us brother. Be grateful your community is still here to listen to your opinion. We're not as bad as the rest of the great unwashed, so take a stand for what you actually want. We are your allies despite your churlish trollishness.
The content created by us plebes is what actually sells your ads. I come to the site to read informed discussion. That is not created by: your editors, submitters, advertisers or user interface..
NO WAIT!! IT IS CREATED BY THE USER INTERFACE!! THE SLASHDOT INTERFACE AND META-MODERATION SYSTEM IS WHY I COME HERE.
Now fuck off with your godawful site redesign. I am definitely boycotting Feb 10 to 17 and likely longer. I have enjoyed being a multi view user, practically every day since I signed up.
Why the hell would I buy a computer screen to look at the blank colour white? Let alone giant images of the incorrect aspect and the rest of the lame features.
The SSD is the ONLY internal storage option, and the extra bay previously available for expansion drives has been removed. If you want the storage professionals are accustomed to and require on these macs, you won't be able to have a standalone laptop. It will all be external drives and network storage. This is simply not viable, functional or ergonomic for graphics professionals. It is a typical Apple move to take away functionality and feature in a new device, to then slowly reintroduce it as "new" at a premium price. Give me a break, its like walking up a down escalator with them, and frankly they've crossed the line of viability.
I'm wondering if this correlates with what I recall about greedy vs generous bacterial colonies, that they tend towards a specific equilibrium regardless of initial conditions. Also similarly the snowdrift dilemma suggests least work is achieved by doing the opposite of other participants.
Will the government then be auctioning off the proceeds? Holding them for cashing in later like a bond? Who is advising them on managing the funds? There is both a certain irony and legitimacy in a state holding this new stateless currency.
By partnering the same software at 2 different distances from the exchange, the further software could know what decisions its alternate had just made, prior to the most current trading signals reaching it. It could then pre-compute and send responses to the predicted reactions of competing algorithms to the initial trade based on past responses of those competing algorithms. br>The nearer algorithm likewise will know to expect that responses from the further algorithm will be made prior to them being sent.
This could allow a resonance to be set up against other competing trading algorithms by provoking responses with the nearer algorithm and reacting to them instantaneously from the further location, since the distance from the exchange buys the further algorithm the compute time for the response and the opportunity to synchronize its actions with the first algorithm.
"Hula-tron" is more descriptive. Since its resonant oscillation, the energy is cycled and increased on each circuit.. I'd imagine electrical induction has its place in capturing and transferring the energy from one side to the other.
Get the correct perspective: computation combined with signals analysis is a military technology plain and simple. This is a widespread use of military technology in the civilian domain and it has wide reaching effects on society similar to the contact of any other form of weaponized / military technology with civilians. There are various international agreements respecting the separation of the civilian domain from the military domain. The lack of these agreements with respect to computation and surveillance is a huge (and perhaps intentional) oversight.
This is how video walls are made. Not news. Doesn't matter. Btw I still haven't forgotten the day this site died.

Sir,
How have you dealt with fans reactions to influences of change over the years. Give them something new? or Keep giving them the familiar that they want?In the same vein, have you ever had to scrap a body of work entirely?
Thank you

Leaving room for this kind of design in our architectures is a great idea.. for now tho, it would appear as whitespace.

Have sex and travel Beta

Telegraph is probably cheaper than SMS.. !60 cents per message! Canada to US with Telus.

Why place it ON a scale when Crane scales can be used.. This could even have been done under water with a lift bag.
At least it will be easier to move now.
Could it be in the iCloud API? Native apps like Numbers store docs in iCloud.
great work by the artist.. I wish an interpretation of the graphic accompanied it tho.. is that art? or a graph of the theory?
