So who is going to teach Gladys from accounting how to store her contacts' PGP keys and encrypt her email? And are you also going to train everyone she sends email to, as well?
Out here in the real world we have to support non-techies and gateways are the most reasonable compromise.
When you own something, you can run it forever, even if the developer decides to stop using it.
In theory, yes you can keep using unsupported software. The reality is that most companies would ultimately be better off if they were forced to drop it sooner rather than later. It hurts to rip off that bandaid, but it's usually worth it.
Here is a demo of modern surveillance systems installed to watch bus passengers. This one is from Orange County CA and it has 7 cameras rolling at all times.

They did this in Fullerton, CA. There is a story and a video clip here: http://www.fullertonsfuture.org/2009/fullerton-school-laptop-program/
If you didn't pay $1,500 for an Apple laptop, your kid would get shipped off to another school on the other side of town.
The ACLU got involved, but settled for a weak compromise - if you submit your personal financial information to the school district, they may decide that you can get public assistance. Otherwise, you are forced to pay for the laptop.
It's impossible for you to know that you aren't breaking any laws. In the U.S., you live under more federal, state, county and city laws than you could read in your lifetime.
It doesn't have to be that stupid. My PC is constantly asking me to auto-update components from:
Windows Update
Adobe Flash
Firefox
Misc firefox plugins
Antivirus
etc....
If the FBI has cooperation from any one of these organizations, it would be trivial to get someone to slip a piece of data into an auto-update for a specific customer.
Here's what really happened: You created a clone product in a very competitive marketplace that you don't understand, and then you didn't even know how to market it.
Of course it is, but we can't afford to do it right.
Because salmonella makes them barf, dehydrate, and causes severe stomach pain. They go in for some liquid and a dose of morphine.

It doesn't give anyone anything.
If you happen to be selling insurance, it gives you quite a bit!
Despite technological advancements, it takes forever for Slashdot to load on my phone.
What could go wrong?

Is that based on the honor system?
Would you buy from Best Buy?
So the real question is... why was she carrying a bag of chicken?
Sorry, that's what robocalls are.
Government is shrinking. Please don't interrupt the process.
Let me guess... you have a Samsung Blu-Ray player?
But it's different this time!
It's true, they really do FORCE parents to buy the laptop. Listen to the presentation in this video - http://www.fullertonsfuture.org/2009/fullerton-school-laptop-program/

Well they obviously had his IP address. Adobe could have made a "special" update for any auto-update client from that specific IP.

Allow me to sum up your post: Semantic Web - Sounds great. Good luck with all that.
But you do have to assume that the complexity of the universe will grow at a slower rate than the human brain.
Then you assume that the complexity of the universe is static? Why?
You seem to have a blind faith that the human brain is capable of understanding every facet of the universe. Why is that?
