  1. Re:I feel bad for gamecube on Next-Gen Console Rumors Summarized, Discussed · · Score: 3, Insightful

Care to cite some evidence of the average gamer age? The fact may be that many companies find the 18-30 male demographic enticing to target but, assuming no 18-30 male wants to play any Nintendo games [I say that as a person in that target group who owns and enjoys a Gamecube], there is still a huge void that many companies simply don't hit. The fact is that I can enjoy both GTA 3 and a game like The Wind Waker. You might think because of the graphic style, the Wind Waker is designed for kids. People who think Mario and Zelda are just for the kiddies are missing out on enjoyable game experiences and probably are doing so because they have some strange need to have ultra-violence in all their games. I find this similar to the types of people who are constantly making jokes about others being gay in order to feel more like a man - a scared little girl deep inside there. And don't feel "bad" for inanimate objects. You can feel bad for the folks working at Nintendo [even though Nintendo is making plenty of profit - unlike the XBox division at MS] but not the Gamecube itself. Have a good day.

The original post I replied to said that there shouldn't be any guns in the household if a child is present. You state that a child is not equipped to deal with a gun or GTA. I claim that it is much easier to explain to a child and prepare that child for handling a gun than GTA. Whereas GTA has missions where you are encouraged to behave immorally, when the parent or a certification course are presenting a gun to a child, the only options presented are ones that are moral and the child is told about the dangers of using the gun.

Ultimately it comes down to parents being responsible. A responsible parent can help a child and teach a child about gun safety and use. The post to which I replied said that a gun simply shouldn't be in the house with a child. Anyway, I've wasted enough time on you.

I agree. That's an easy fix to the problem of people not feeling like they earned it - simple options screen selection could just turn off the adaptive gameplay. One thing I would like to note is that this isn't AI. Detecting how many times a player has failed and lowering enemy health or making enemies less sensitive to movement is not AI.

The field of artificial intelligence is nowhere near having a good handle on simulating thought but Splinter Cell isn't where the breakthrough has come. And I'm not trying to pick on you - AI gets bandied about and associated with way too many products and is actually becoming a watered down term. I mean, the electric blanket I got over the holidays had the slogan, "The blanket with a brain!" printed on the outside. Again, sensor detection and response is about as AI as a smoke detector detecting smoke and then beeping.

Here's an interesting point of view. You're saying that the violent video game the child has access to is not the problem but rather the guns the child has access to. Of course, if you take this stance that when a child has access to a gun, the child will immediately do something wrong with it then you must also take the stance that when a child has access to a violent video game, that game will warp the child's mind.

Parents are moronic for not taking an interest in their child's life and making sure that the goods they are using are being appropriately used and understood. I would be much more concerned about a child whose parents have never been around than a child whose parents took him hunting.

It is perfectly acceptable to own a gun, even if you have children, as long as you are responsible. Honestly, you're making the kind of argument that people make about video games. Children are going to get access to both guns and violent video games at some point in their lives - the job of the parent is to prepare the child so that when those times come, the child understands right from wrong and can make mature choices about what to do next.

Don't own a gun at all? Thanks for the advice but I think I'll take the safety of my family a little more seriously than you obviously take the safety of yours.

I have not played Rainbow Six 3 but am familiar with the earlier games in their PC incarnation. The depictions of violence are relatively tame - well, as tame as head shots can be - and especially in comparison to the graphic depictions of violence that, say, Manhunt has. I don't think the story is really saying this is an awful thing that needs to be fixed right away BUT there is a difference between a video game that should be in the PG13 to R range if it were a movie and a website that's pushing NC17 material. Right or wrong, in the U.S., violence is more widely viewed as acceptable for public consumption than hardcore anal penetration and the like. That being said, I think it's just a kind of funny fluff piece about how people at Ubisoft didn't consider the ramifications of putting a URL out there and not snatching it up.

This is similar to the story about a phone number for God being left in the film Bruce Almighty that did not begin with 555. The producers of the movie wouldn't expect anyone to call the number but, of course, you get knuckleheads who do call. They fixed it in the DVD release.

If that's the case, how could they be selling the iPod at the same cost as the hard drive within it? Assuming they get some bulk discount, that's still very little profit there.

So how do the books balance out? I would expect if Apple is so interested in pushing the iPods [as evidenced by the creation of iTunes], they'd want to get a nice profit from each unit sold.

Certainly you must recognize that RPG games can drive sales for a particular console. You should know that SNES sales were driven, in part, because of Square's relationship with Nintendo.
